Fasting / 5:2 diet

IF, 4:3, 5:2 - Maintaining a healthy weight - Chapter 3

Talkinpeace · 19/07/2013 13:03

This thread is for those who have been practicing IF (Intermittent Fasting) for quite a while and are now at, or nearing, their target healthy weight.
It's also for anyone who is doing it for the health benefits alone.

How do we experience fasts and balance a stable food intake while having little or no weight to lose?
How do we ensure that this WOL keeps us at the healthy weight long term rather than revert to yoyo games?
How do we ensure that we keep ourselves looking great rather than just thin?

Many of us have been maintaining at our original goal weight for a few months, and others are joining all the time.
Obviously, the more the merrier!
It is also worth considering whether a second, leaner target might be achievable.

You'll find the first two maintenance threads and all the main 5:2 threads for posters practicing IF to lose weight here on the Fasting / 5:2 on the diet forum. We're currently on thread no. 23, but there is a new main thread every 2-3 weeks.

There are two other associated threads:
This one, which is an absolute goldmine of Tips and Links on how to practice IF, and the research behind it.

And here is a treasure trove of 5:2 recipes, mostly low calorie for fasting days, but there are also recipes for when you want to treat yourself. And, now we're maintaining, we'll need more of these!

PS thanks to Breadandwine (proof that this forum welcomes everybody, not just Mums) for setting up the last thread while my old name that set up the first one was on 'holiday' Grin

Morning all

Back to back 2 fast days. DH will be sleeping all morning due to working 38hours straight, I'm babysitting for a friend this eve so will keep all edible calories for an early family dinner. So if completed that will be 4 fasts this week and first back to back for moths and months, but thought it was worth trying to "make up" for an indulgent week ahead in advance rather than upping fasts after it

Breadandwine · 20/07/2013 18:10

Good thinking, ATB!

I'm getting pleasantly mellow, knocking back my homemade stout, sitting in the sun, listening to the Aussies getting well and truly stuffed!

(Sorry to go off-piste!)

Each pint is around 200 calories, so that's...

Loads!

For dinner, I shall stuff myself with a lovely spag bol (homemade pasta), followed by chocolate sponge and ice cream (Swedish Glace - chocolate).

So I'll do the opposite of you. ATB, and take the weight off after the event.

Good maintaining, everyone!

Cheers, Wine

My plan might end up failing, spent all morning feeling faint and tired and blamed it on DD sleeping through for a change and my body not handling it!

Packed off to bed for a nap, slept for two hours and still feeling poo so DH is cooking and I don't have the heart to tell him I'm supposed to be fasting. So long as its not too calorific (not much in our fridge is) then I should still be ok as he's babysitting tonight so can order in pizza and I'll skip dinner and go to bed early

Actually feel a lot better after some food and even with a chocolate chip cookie I'm in at 400kcals total. Can't fast tomorrow as we're out for brunch AND a dinner party, fasting Monday then not again til Friday

Checking in. I'm still fasting when I can but school holidays and a mental workload (I'm in tourism) are making it difficult. I've bounced a bit, and the fasting is holding me at 66kg. If I weren't fasting I know the scales would be creaping upwards. I refuse to go back to the way I was. I just need to hold my weight here until Sept then I'm going to head for my lower target.

Woo hoo! Despite 2 days of music festival, food Wine carbs to mop up the Wine more breakfast carbs to deal with the hangover, pakoras with hot chilli sauce to kick start the afternoon, more Wine (you get the picture ) I have done a WI to assess the damage and am at the bottom of my range Grin

Otoh I suspect this might be down to dehydration and the effects of the hot chilli food on the gut Blush but still - very good to see and a cheery start to the day Smile

Nice work cats!

Epically failed fast yesterday but think I needed food and sleep and I did fast 3 times last week before yesterday so not the end of the world! Guilt free day today with brunch then to a friend's for dinner, yay!

I have to say it was really lovely just to eat the festival food and not worry about calories - I have so many memories of being at events and feeling trapped because there wasn't any food that I would allow myself to eat Confused.

I ate the deep fried, battered veg with great delight and enjoyed every bit - we even shared some fish and chips Grin. Today I made a huge pot of veg & lentil curry that the dcs and I have demolished - will do a fast when I'm back at work on weds. I'm due to see some friends (work context, ex colleagues) towards the end of the week so want to feel on top of things then - I was a good 32lbs heavier the last time they saw me Smile so I will look good - but want to FEEL good too !

Just had a reality check whilst doing up my belt! Sad

Normally I can pull through about 4-5 inches before settling down on the last notch, but just now I could only manage about two!

Nothing I wasn't prepared for, since I've been overenjoying myself recently.

And it's nothing I can't fix - I'm going for a 36hour liquid fast (started a couple of hours ago), and I'll probably fast again on Wednesday.

I've had this theory for a while, now, that our forebears would have feasted every now and again, as well as fasted. So we should over-indulge on occasion, and not feel guilty about it. Grin

Fasting today but not terribly motivated again. OH says I definitely need to gain a kg or two so that doesn't help. And I know I'll be in such a bad mood come 7pm this evening, plus I'm not teaching but at home all day with a full fridge...

mumofcrazynamedkids · 22/07/2013 12:37

tip I want to know who your OH is too!

americas 3 good fasts last week is great, you'll have another good one today and your upcoming indulgent week should be pure guilt free pleasure!

cats your festival fun sounds fantastic, just what this WOE allows.

breadandwine you know the drill, and I agree about natural periods of feast and famine, but I know also the glum feelings when we gain, finding the equilibrium of not feeling bad about it is my challenge!

FrenchFancy sounds like a great plan, school holidays definitely a bit of a killer, I agree, glad that I'll be working lots of it so can fast to keep things on an even keel!

had a weekend of too much wine on thurs, 2.5 pints of cider on Sat and then too much wine yesterday, not feeling very impressed that I drank on 3 days, it wasn't in the plan, and I definitely overate at least 2 days and up to tdee on the other 2, so feeling abit Angry too, last 2 weeks good progress just hiccupped, but, it should just mean I'll be teh same weight (fingers crossed) this week as last week, and might try and trow in a back to back extra fast on thurs so that I'm feeling great for a weekend up north with bf and without kids!

bshh great loss last week!

the glum feelings when we gain

mocnk, as you know, this WOL is a long-term thing, and there'll come a time when a few pounds here or there won't even register. But I agree, at this stage it can be disheartening.

For what it's worth, this morning I can pull through 4 inches of belt and my weight is back down to the low 9sts - and I'm only halfway through my 36 hour fast! [smuggitsmiley]

breadandwine Whoop! good to be smug, hope I'm feeling that by the end of the week. I'm going for a no food til dinner fast today, I rarely do that as splitting into 2 meals always works better, but recently I've been finding I'm not actually hungry til about mid afternoon, so I may as well have a cup of stock and save the cals for a more filling dinner, Sainburys have a new range of gluten free dairy free, low cal ready meals with a womans name on....can't remember what right now, but i had teh cottage pie last week and was really pretty good, and I have a spanish chicken with brown rice for tonights dinner to look forward to at about 350 cals, so enough for some green veg to go with.

well I just got home from my Christmas lunch.
Yes really, a colleague and I have been rescheduling since mid December. So I put crackers on the table today!
It was odd to eat Lunch on a Monday, but I'll probably fast tomorrow.
DH is now doing 16:8 most days and it seems to be helping his digestion (I always do) so we'll probably keep that going through the summer.

B&W
I think you are right that a monthly blow out (religious / solar calendar festivals etc) and then three weeks of restraint is pretty much how we ate for thousands of years
and it means that the feast days are great fun (like catsrus having festival food) and feel "earned"

aagghh failed in my no food til dinner attempt, but did 19 hours, just had to eat something, so had 2 garibaldi biscuits, coming in at a not so worrying 76 cals, a carrot would have been better, but none available in the office, considering my not insignificant alcohol consumption yesterday I'm not doing too badly!
