Mirena coil

Hi, I had the coil fitted about 2-3 weeks ago with no problems.

Yesterday I was fine then all of a sudden had horrendous pain, like a contraction that doesn't stop, lost a lot of blood and blacked out every time I stood up. Called 111 in a panic who sent an ambulance. Had some pain relief and felt better.

Today I still feel faint and very sick - similar to pregnancy symptoms.

Is all this normal side effects from the coil?

I'm going to make an appointment with my GP to be on the safe side as it was very scary especially with two babies to look after!

No, this is not normal at all. I am on my second Mirena and never had any side effects. My friend had something like this and Mirena was taken out.

No that is not normal, you should go back to the doctor asap. Did the ambulance take you to a and e? Did they not examine you thoroughly?

It's not normal. Did you get checked over? The mirena can migrate and perforate the wall of your womb so I would definitely get it checked out

No I didn't go to a&e as I had DCs with me and no one to watch them, I also felt better once the pain had eased off.

I've got an appointment with my GP next week to discuss it.

I seem to struggle with any form of hormonal contraception, I think DH is going to have to get the snip at this rate!

You could try the copper coil as that doesn't have any hormones in it

I did talk about the copper coil with my Dr but he didn't recommend it as it could make my already very heavy periods worse but will ask again.

Do you have the mirena for periods as much as for contraception then? Maybe the copper coil wouldn't suit then. What other hormonal contraception have you tried? Diaphragm or condoms maybe?

Yes I have it for both reasons.

I've tried various types of pill and the implant.

I fell pregnant while on the pill and using condoms!

I'm starting to panic that I may be pregnant again, I have a 15 month old and a 11 week old already Confused

Goodness, poor you! I hope you're feeling better now?

I didn't have this as a symptom after. I did have lot of pain for a good 3-4 weeks, and I bled every single day for 6 weeks but I did not experience what you have described.

Please get yourself scanned to ensure your mirena has not migrated. What did the paramedics do?

I'm feeling much better now thank you.

The paramedic wanted to take me up to a&e but I felt a lot better with pain relief and I had no one to watch the children so he told me to make an appointment with my GP which I've done.

My DM had similar problems when she first had a coil fitted but no issues after the first few weeks which I'm hoping is the case for me

Check if you can still feel the threads properly, in case it has moved. Sounds really really sore!

Hi. Just an update really and looking for a bit of advice.

I had my check up and they think the coil could be in the wrong place, I am waiting for a date for a scan to confirm this. I had unprotected sex the two nights before so I requested the MAP which my Dr flat out refused saying that my pregnancy test was negative (obviously it would be being so early on) I'm annoyed at myself for not pushing for it, I've had numerous problems with this Dr who is covering my normal Drs mat leave. She missed all the signs of my pregnancy with my daughter and is just bloody rude if I'm honest. She claims to be a family planning specialist but seems to know sweet FA!!

I will be able to test next Monday, I'm so upset that I could be pregnant again when I have a 16 week old and a 16 month old already.

Also, how long should it take for a scan appointment to come through?

TIA

That Dr sounds pretty rude and unhelpful. Sorry you're having all these problems. Is it now too late to ask someone else for the MAP? I don't know how long it would take for a scan - is it to look for your coil? I hope you get some reassurance and a negative test Brew

I think if it was any other dr, i wouldn't be so angry but I've had problem after problem with her! It's too late for the MAP, I was cutting it fine when I requested it but would've been just in time.

Thank you, I'm really hoping for a negative test as I don't think I would be able to have another pregnancy and baby right now, I'm so upset that I could be in this position.

My advice to anyone having the coil fitted is to use condoms at least until your 6 week review to be on the safe side.

I'm back again (I bet you are all fed up of me and my coil sagaWink)

Two updates:

  1. I am not pregnant... hurrah!! Grin

  2. The bleeding/spotting seems to have finally stopped, or at least I'm hoping so.

How long did it take for everyone else's bleeding/spotting to stop? It's been just over 3 months now and I'm more than ready to stop having to use pads every-bloomin-day.

I'm bleeding still on week 9. I've bled for 7 of the 9 weeks in total and I am so done with it. It's painful too

You need to have it taken out if you are having bad reactions to it
I have had a bad reaction to one recently (only had it 6 weeks!) And they took it out straight away

I bled on and off for 8 months until I insisted they removed the coil. I was also fat, hormonal and furious, with no libido. Most effective contraception ever. Never again.

Hi all,
I would like to know opinions of my situation regarding the Mirena Coil. Abit if background info I have tried most types of contraception including the copper coil, oral contra, natural planning etc this is my last hope so to speak.
I’ve had the mirena just over 8 months now, initially I had quite a lot of spotting which I anticipated and over the last few months I have had a monthly period. My issues are over the last 2/3 months I have had increasingly bad anxiety and generally feel really low/depressed in myself. I feel deflated and impatient especially with my 3 children. I usually cope very well and just get on with things but lately both home and work I’m feeling over whelmed and feel like I cannot cope!
My question is, is 8 months long enough for the coil to have settled properly? Or should I give it longer before I have it taken out? Does anyone recommend any supplements that might help balance me and ease these feelings?
I really don’t want it removed if I can help it but equally life is too short to feel like this day in and day out 😔 xx
