I want my merina coil out!!

I've had the coil in a year and a half and apart from no periods I'm pretty unhappy with it. My skin is sooo bad, I have no sex drive, I've put on a ton of weight (to the point I'm now covered in stretchmarks) when I've always been slim. I want it out. Has anyone had theirs out? Does it hurt? How long does it take to get out? I'm fine with piercings/injections/having blood taken but the thought of having the coil removed is majorly creeping me out. Sad

I took my own out. When you do your fortnightly check for the strings just pinch them between the ends of two fingers and pull gently. Should come straight out with no pain at all

I've never even checked the strings before.. . Shock . Is it really that easy?

I've found it really awful but I'm dreading getting it out so have been putting it off. Is it really that easy to remove yourself? I don't want to end up as an A&E cautionary tale...

I took my copper one out myself when we wanted our first. Then didn't get on with the mirena so took it out. Neither hurt. Both came straight out with very little effort.
And I'm sure you're supposed to check the strings regularly to make sure it hasn't dislodged because they can cause pretty nasty injuries if they do

Getting them put in took two attempts for each one so I thought taking them out would be much worse than it was

I also took my own copper one out when we decided to try for our second and didn't want to wait. I won't say it was easy, getting hold of the strings is the challenge, but once I did, it really is just like tugging out a tampon.

I am now having similar issues with my merina. If it weren't for the fact I am done with having children and can't think of a better option, I'd be whipping it out right now!

Disclaimer - this is probably terrible advice and some HCP will prob come along and scold us soon.

It's not unheard of for them to come out by themselves. And that is what my doctor thinks happened. Twice.

After it comes out what happens-any heavy bleeding/bad cramps etc? I've read a few scary stories but I'm hoping they're just unlucky people Hmm. I've literally never even checked for the strings or been to a check up before, not pregnant so assumed everythings fine. Wish I wasn't such a wimp about it.

Took mine out too! No different from taking out a tampon once you've got hold of the strings.

Did you take it out OP?

Didn't know so many people took their own out, but having it taken out is similar to having it put in - a bit easier if anything. You barely notice. Within two weeks my sex drive returned and my mood improved.

I would suggest getting a professional to do it but yes, do get it out. I think mirena is commonly missold. Significant side effects and increased risk of ectopic pregnancy.

Shock

Do not pull it out yourself! Go down to your local clinic/GP and get someone qualified to do it for you.

It is very straightforward having it removed, so don't worry about that OP.

People who say it's no different from taking a tampon out seem to not grasp human biology. You could do yourself some serious damage.

Last time someone blindly followed DIY medical advice on MN, their boyfriend ended up with a punctured eardrum.

I didn't take it out. I've got an appointment for 2 weeks time , hopefully it all goes smoothly. No more hormones for me-yay!!
