Spotting after sex?

Recently, I have noticed very light red/pink spotting a day or two after sex. It has happened 3 times in the last few months. After the first time, I put it to the back of my mind but am worried now as it's happened twice since.

I have never bled immediately after sex. But a day or two after.

I have an appointment booked for Friday.

Has anyone experienced this?

You've posted in the contraception topic, but don't mention what method you are using (though I'm not sure that choice of method makes much difference to the need for investigation).

One common cause, which I'm pretty sure is unrelated to family planning method, is cervical polyps, which are easy to diagnose, painless to remove and and almost invariably harmless.

You should visit your GP

Postcoital bleeding (bleeding after sex) is often nothing but can indicate cervical pathology or undiagnosed infection. You must make sure your cervical smear is up to date and if it's not, please book with your practice nurse ASAP. It would be prudent to have swabs taken for STI's, just in case. Often the surgery will let you do your own swab and drop it in.

This does not warrant panicking and ringing for an emergency appointment, but I would want to be seen and examined internally within 2 weeks.

As previous poster has mentioned, hormonal contraception can cause bleeding, but best to exclude sinister causes before considering this.

Thank you for the replies.

I am on the pill - cileste.

I managed to get an appointment on Friday - with the nurse practitioner as no Gp appointments were pre-bookable hmm

I am certain I do not have an undiagnosed STI. As me and my partner have been together for years and have two children.

I am not 25 until later in the year so not had a smear test yet..

Under 25s in England get referred to the colposcopy unit if they have repeated post coital bleeding. They do the smear test.

Have an STI screen anyway, the nurse practitioner will take 2 seconds to do it on Friday.

Cilest is a combined contraceptive pill and should not cause bleeding, although can in some women. So come back to that if everything else is normal.

Good luck on friday
