Hi I went to hospital today to have a cyst removed from my overie and a small amount of endometriosis taken away.

When I saw the registrar after the procedure she told me she wants me to take a three month course of Provera...a hormone to stop my period while I heal.

I'm a bit worried about taking it especially after reading the side effects. My mum had breast cancer a few years ago so I refuse to take the contraceptive pill, theres also a family history of blood clots and I had postnatal depression with my second child...these are all mentioned in the leaflet that came with the tablets.

I did ask the registrar about my concerns and she was very flippant. I explained to her I've not normally got a problem with medications but I got a real thing about hormones it just really worries me.

I'm in my mid 30's and plan on getting pregnant again later this year, ive never had problems conceiving.

Have any of you taken this medication? Were there any side effects? Did any of you refuse it and it made things worse?

I'm really worried I'm going to spoil my chances of getting pregnant but also worried I might increase my chances of cancer or something else!

Any advice please?

Thanks

I had a similar operation three months ago and I'm still waiting for my period to start. I think my body was shocked into stopping any period by the operation! I never got any advice that taking the pill would aid healing and took only paracetamol/ibuprofin painkillers and got plenty of rest. It did however take a good 8 weeks to feel properly better, even though I was only signed off work for 2 weeks. I went back to work but felt a bit uncomfortable at the end of the day after sitting at a desk all day. I'd go and chat it thorough with your GP who will have more time to hear your concerns re family history. I guess if it is short term use just to aid healing, the risks re side effects are probably quite low - but only a health professional can really help advise on that. Hope you feel better soon Flowers
