Can you *really* loose a Mirena without knowing it?

Has anyone had a mirena coil fall out without realising it?

I had one fitted 6 weeks ago (goodness it was painful! I have a posterior cervix which made it hard to fit), had my first mirena period with very heavy bleeding 2 weeks after fitting, then had a check up at 4 weeks but at the check up the threads could not be found.

My GP said not to worry, that the threads had most likely tucked up into the cervix. However I had an external ultrasound and a (horrible and very intrusive) internal ultrasound that failed to find the mirena. I was then sent for an x-ray the next day. In fact, I had 3 x-rays as they could not find it so kept x-raying bits of me to make sure it was not lodged in my intestines or bladder.

I do believe that everyone has done everything they can to locate it, and I do believe the radiologist (who was so lovely and re-assuring) when he said that he did know what he was looking for!

However, I just have a really hard time believing that it could have fallen out without me knowing?

The one that I had fitted looked quite large! I cant help worrying that in fact it is still there somewhere, waiting to do damage to my insides….….is that likely? Or can they really slip out without you realising.

I would love to know if other people have lost their mirena without realising.

I am absolutely not having another one fitted as this experience has been stressful and uncomfortable. I was trying to find a solution to very heavy periods, and was reluctant to try the mirena but thought it was my best option for dealing with heavy bleeding. Im looking for alternative solutions now!

Also I am still very broody, (though DH says two children is enough) so was I upset not to have my fertility in my own control really.

(My GP was very worried that I might be pregnant when we realised the mirena was really not there - for me that would have been an absolute gift as I know DH would have just said it must be fate, but sadly I know I am not!)

Thanks in advance for your replies!

My cousin lost hers but it was a massive period cramp which pushed it out ( so sorry tmi!!) But she felt it come out, really painful and landed on her pad. its plausible that it came out into the loo and you didn't notice.....rare though.

My coil fell out. I felt it a bit the first time. Didn't notice at all the second time.
They checked with ultrasound. It's gone.

Mine fell out after three months! I also had to have an X-ray and US, it had gone!
