Can anyone say anything positive about the Mirena Coil

Sophiathesnowfairy · 20/01/2013 21:55

I have a 10 week old baby and 1 stone and 1/2 to loose before I can get back into my work clothes in April.

I am meant to be having a Mirena Coil fitted on Wednesday but I've got myself ina bit of a state about it. Everything I have read is about people gaining weight, not being able to loose weight despite dieting and exercising, being moody and depressed, no sex drive. If this is all the case then what is the point.

But what could I do that won't mess me up in this way? I asked to be sterilised but the DR said I should try this first.

Can anyone reassure me?

I have had one for four years. It made me a bit spotty initially and I had break through bleeds for about six months (used a mooncup) Since then its been fabulous. No weight gain, no periods, wonderful.

Loads of people get on well with it - but they are less likely to post about that!
No periods...and no babies = two good reasons!

Weight gain and as a depressive type I haven't had any problems with it.

I had one for five years and loved it. No periods and it didn't affect my weight at all.

I've had one for three years. No periods. No weight gain (I go up & down with Xmas etc as per usual). No need to remember pills etc.

Was a bit painful for 3-4 days after fitted, but since then never noticed it.

It would be really difficult to comment on moodiness etc, given so many life changes since it was fitted. ie I can be quite moody - but then again I look after two young kids, have had tough time through recession etc... I very much doubt coil had any negative effect.

Lack of periods is FANTASTIC.

I love the no periods thing - I do get bad cramps still but much less than my periods - plus I'm not pregnant which is fab

I am overweight anyway and wouldn't say it made me any bigger

I love it too. Had one for a couple of years - no periods after getting really heavy long periods. It has changed my life. Bit of weight on at the beginning - 6lbs - but lost it really easily when I put the effort in.

Had mine for 6 months. Very painful for first two weeks then it all settled down. No weight gain at all, much better moods than the implant, and very light spotting every once in a while. Occasional period pains but much less than before.

I forget I even have a coil these days.

I've had a mirena for over 12 years, bar literally 10 months for a planned pregnancy, and I honestly can't see past it.
I know there can be side effects, but I've had one period in all that time, no spotting or breakthrough bleeding, and no PMT.
I'm due to get it renewed, and I'm of an age now where the practice nurse has mentioned the menopause word. Apparently if you keep your mirena it can help with some of the less pleasant menopause symptoms, although I've not gone too deeply into that as I'm in denial!

If nothing else, I can't begin to calculate how much I've not had to spend on sanpro over the years.

I love mine. I'm due to have it replaced this summer and I'm not hesitating at all.

I had horrid heavy blobby periods every sodding 22 days. After children they lasted 7 days.

Got me a mirena coil and I LOVE it. Took 18 months for periods to COMPLETELY stop, but they were lighter and less frequent instantly.

If you didn't have a natural delivery, it can be tricker to fit.

I haven't gained any weight with it, but it took me a year to gradually lose baby weight.

I am a little bit hairier, top lip and chin. But this could be age. Would rather wax my face every month than have a fucking period.

Nothing but positives to say about the mirena. That's what I've used for the past 10 years and had absolutely no problems with it. I get no periods and none of the side effects I got with other hormonal contraception (I understand that's because it's administered to the source, ie your womb, that the dose doesnt have to be as high)

Having it fitted isnt very nice but 15 minutes of disconfort for 5 years of safety is well worth it imo, and it has a lower failure rate than sterilisation

Great, thanks everyone. I have read so many horror stories I was thinking of cancelling and getting quite depressed abut it. I think I will give it a go for three months and see how I get on.

Thanks Grin

Another Mirena appreciator here. Although after 18 months with no periods, have just had 2...??
Be warned re: trying it for 3 months though. The first three months I had mine were the worst: unpredictable spotting almost constantly. You really have got to be prepared to sit that out before seeing the benefits.

Another fan here! Had mine for 2 years, light spotting to start with, no pain. No periods (occasional spotting tho) and no babies Grin
Was overweight when fitted but have lost 4 stone since and no harder/easier than losing weight without it.

I have also lost weight with it, 3 stone after dieting. I am not sure if it makes you hungrier but have heard some claim it does. As long as you eat healthy food you likely won't gain weight but everyone is different. Have had no spots or other symptoms after 4 years on it. Have scant periods which is great as was very heavy. Only symptom is fuller boobs but not sure if that is the mirena for sure. I love it. Very reliable but not permanent as sterilization.
