Please tell me about the proceedure of having a coil fitted?

I trotted off to GP today & was given the Minipill but I've got 3 months worth to cover me while BF then she suggests I go for the coil but I'm scared about it being fitted

I'm on my 2nd mirena coil and think they are fab. Actually having it fitted wasn't as bad as I'd expected either. (I'd had an induced labour with dd1 and would rate that much much worse).
It is uncomfortable and rather embarassing but the benefits definatley out weigh the 10min or so that it actually took to fit.
I think I had to go back for 3 appointments - inital consultation, then swabs & pregnancy test, then fitting.
Strangley I found having a nurse in the same room as the gp to assist was the worst part of the procedure - made me feel very self conscious (whereas having a smear or sweep there was only one person gp/midwife in the room)
I would definatley recommend. HTH

I got mine fitted at the sexual health/family planning clinic, as the GP who did them was away. I had smear at same time. One nurse in room, few questions, then it was like a smear, speculum insertion, smear done, anaesthetic squirted, 5 min wait, waggling as coil went in, get dressed, 5 min wait to ensure I was ok and booked checkup, left.

Checkup appt 3 weeks later to check all there and no infection.

I think the clinic was great place to go as the nurse fits coils.daily and it was totally painless, minor discomfort for less than a day.

Mine is copper, not Mirena as I wanted no hormones after Cerazette sent me batshit. Highly recommended.

Another one who highly recommends the copper coil - and insertion was uncomfortable rather than painful, and that was short-lived.

I have been persuaded to have a mirena but I am not sure about the hormone side of it and extra bleeding worries me. Did you have much bleeding freckle? And whe people say you get regular bleeding what do they mean by that? The odd day, day on day off, week on week off?

Most people have regular periods with a copper coil, often a bit heavier, sometimes more painful. Though I've had no bleeding at all and it's been 6 months now.

I have a Mirena coil.

Procedure was thus;

Take painkiller
Go to appointment
Lie on couch and GP inserted speclum.
GP applied a 'clip' that opens cervix.
GP inserted coil.
Clip and speclum removed.
Lie on couch for couple of mins to recover.
Go home.

Uncomfortable but not painful. Similar discomfort to having a sweep done.
