Cerazette - is it making me fat?

This is a difficult one -

I started taking cerazette 2 months ago. First month was fine, I didn't put on any weight, had a normal period etc etc

Im coming towards the end of my second month and I've suddenly realised a weight increase of 6lbs. This seemed to come on over the space of 2 weeks. Now to be fair I have been eating loads of junk. The thing is, I'm one of those lucky people that CAN eat junk and NOT put on weight so I've not been eating that much more than I normally "get away with" iyswim?

Anyway I thought "fairs fair" and I put myself on a diet. I'm also one of those lucky people who loses weight without fail once on a diet. This time however, it's not shifting.

I started the pill at 10st 6lbs. Last week I weighed 10st 12lbs. I've had a really good week, eating healthy etc and I stand on the scales this morning expecting to be around 10st 10lbs (which would normally happen with me) and I'm mortified to see the scales telling me I'm 10st 11lbs and 3/4!!!

I can only assume it's the pill?? or has my years of unhealthy eating finally caught up with me?

Any sort of hormonal contraceptive can make you put on weight and quite often the side effects of them creep up on you over time so that you are fine when you first start taking them but over the course of a few months you slowly gain weight, lose your sex drive or turn into a crazy psycho bitch from hell and may not even realise it's the pill causing it. I had terrible side effects within a few days from the implant and judging from internet forums and my GP and contraceptive nurse's reactions when I told them I'd only lasted 24 days before having it out (I had it out at a family planning clinic because I couldn't wait a week for an appointment) I was a very special case for having such a bad reaction so quickly.

I think in those circs I'd come off it for a couple of months and see if the weight comes off again. If it doesn't then prob it's not the hormones and you could reconsider the pill. Personally I don't do hormonal contraception at all but those that do say that all the pills are different so you might get on better with a different one.

I put on lots of weight on cerazette despite having been the type who could eat lots without worrying. On the plus side, it made me much healthier in my eating habits which makes me feel much better, but the weight still hadn't shifted despite having been off it for five months (i was on it for two years).

hope it works out for you x

My doctor said that research shows contraceptive pills do not change your metabolism or make you put on/ lose weight, what they do do is change your appetite. If you're eating more and don't like the outcome recognise that you're eat more and take control of it.

Im on depo injection and its having the opposite effect, has put me off my food :(

It took about 6 months for my extra weight to go after stopping the pill. I took a few different ones over the years - put on weight with all of them, but cerazette was the worst. I changed pill again after only 3 months on that!

I've been discovering, after 3 months on the Cilest pill (I wonder is it like Cerazette), that I have gradually put on a stone weight. And yes I havent exactly been 'watching' the diet but I havent been stuffing myself, I run 20 miles a week and after DD2 was born I lost 4stone and have kept it well off over the last 2 years with the running......but in the last five weeks I've just found my weight has been going up and up......so after this cycle I'm def coming off the pill, I worked so hard to get off this weight theres no way I'm going back to that again over the pill....

Hi everyone I have now been on cerazette for about a year now n I've have gained around 3stone I have gone from a size 8/10 to 12/14 and I'm convinced it's because of this pill. Prior to taking cerazette I was on Yasmin which I was fine on however I wanted my periods to stop so the doctor recommended cerazette. I've gained so much weight and have acne now it's making me depressed can anyone recommend a pill which u don't have periods on and don't gain weight?

I gained weight on cerezette as well , I've been on it years and have been stuck between 14&15 stone for about 3 years yet IMO I don't think I actually eat that bad and I have 2 physical jobs and 3 kids. When I had my third baby I weighed less after giving birth then I did when I fell pregnant , breastfed and went back on cerezette low and behold I gained 2 stone back :(

I've been on cerezette for about 6 months and seem to have shot up a stone and no matter how I exercise or diet nothing is shifting. Also now appear to have acne which I have never had before. Shame because this has been one of the best I've tried in terms of mood. Is it just me or is it weird there is still no proof one way or the other that the pill causes weight gain?! Strikes me that if there was open evidence this was the effect that drug company's would lose a bit of custom...Surely by now there would be hard evidence..surely!! I'm just worried that when I come off the pill the weight won't come off...

I've only been taking cerazette now for under two months, I was put on it waiting for the marina coil but missed my appointment and need to wait again. I'm usually a tiny UK size 6 and weight 6stone, I put on 1/2 stone and I've got so bloated and chubby around the stomac I was convinced I was pregnant. I got it from my local family planning and they didn't want to know when I explained I would rather go back on my old combined pill! Grrrrrr. I think I'll have to give it a miss!

I'm sorry to hear that (because it's an awful feeling!) but it confirms my suspicions. I too look like I'm pregnant I am so bloated in the tummy. When I mentioned the weight gain to my GP he said 'It's probably your portion size' and that was it. I'm staying on this until after my holiday in a couple of weeks for fear that I might have a 6 month long period or something when I stop. Let me know if you go back to normal size quite quickly once you come off it. Fingers crossed for you!

I've lost over 2.5 stone over five months while taking it, after the birth of DD. I have been specifically trying to by following Slimming World so this might override that side effect?

Hi I know this is an old post but just came across it!
I started taking cerazette about 8 months ago. Have gained over 1 stone.
I eat relatively healthy and have dieted for months but nothing's coming off!
I'm so frustrated but would rather be fat than have excruciating periods nearly every day of my life.
Can't win them all !Sad

Glad I found this old post. Started taking Cerezette four months ago - put on a stone. Stopped this week and switched to combination pill (Marvelon). Have lost four pounds already.

I was putting on weight for months. I tried slimming world. Exercising more. Eating like a bird! But week on week the weight was piling on. I was trying desperately to lose weight as had set a date for my wedding. I had blood test after blood test to try and find the cause. I never once thought it was my pill as I had previously had the implant which is the same hormone.

Anyway I had the implant put in and a week later 6lb had gone. I lost 20lb in 5 weeks. (That's the point I'm at now) the nurse who put the implant in said that cerazette was one of the worst for making you gain weight. When I told the doctor he said that he had just found that wth another patient too.

People say that pills don't make you put on weight. But I was eating the healthiest I have ever eaten and exercising more. I did this for 7 months!!!

Glad I know what it is now. Would never recommend cerazette!

Hi, I was put on cerazette and for 8 months had no side effects at all. Was absolutely bliss as I had bad experiences with other pills. However, I stopped taking cerazette for about a month but regretted it soon after. I started taking cerazette again a couple of weeks ago and immediately started getting chin acne, oily skin and quick weight gain but I have never experienced any of this before!! Do I wait it out and hope it gets better or should I just stop taking it? P.s the chin acne is ever so slightly better than when i first i got it. If anyone could help i'd be so grateful.

Hi, only just found this thread as am at a crossroad with this cerazette. Started taking it about 18 months ago purely because I had an ovarian cyst so needed my periods to stop. For the first 4-6 weeks I bled for 2 weeks, got bad headaches and got very acne over my forehead (I never normally get spots). Anyway persevered and it was fine in the end & settled down. However, normally I'm a comfortable 8-10 in clothing, I'm 38 years old now and have never had a problem with my weight until now. It's happened very gradually, I normally sit at 8 & a half stone but now well over 9 & have changed shape slightly (even bigger breasts)) none of my clothes fit. I don't eat excessive, maybe 1 takeaway a week and normal during the week but before I could lose weight very quickly , not anymore. I'm absolutely gutted as the pill has worked in every other way, my cyst has gone, periods completely stopped & I don't feel sick which is a miracle for me taking pills. But...I'm beginning to feel very unhappy with this weight gain. My family are saying...it's your age!! Well that's just infuriating as I didn't have a problem 18 months ago lol Hmm! I'm thinking to stop it & see what happens & if I get cyst back will have to go through all the symptoms again & go back on it & hope it works as well. Will be very interesting to see if I lose the weight. I'm glad I've read these other posts, there has to be a link doesn't there.

Im so glad I have read this. Been on cerazette for over a year and gained over a stone, lost my confidence and have no interest in sex. I feel like I'm in the early stages of pregnancy, bloated and craving lots of food!!!
I have been sterilised and waiting for a scan that it has been successful, can't wait to stop the pill after!!

Happy I found this thread!

I was put on the POP by my Dr because I was too old to take the combined pill anymore (just turned 40). The first pill they gave me stripped my sex drive completely and I broke out in acne so bad over my back I’ve been left with scars where I messed with the spots (I’m a picker I can’t help it). And it never even stopped my bloody periods (no pun intended).

I’ve been changed to Noriday and have been taking that for 5 months. In the last month I’ve piled on half a stone and constantly feel bloated. I’ve broke out in acne again but this time it’s on my face all around my jaw line mainly. (Ive never suffered with acne in my life now this pill is giving it to me both barrels). My boobs have also expanded and now feel like I’m carrying a couple of boulders. (I’ve always had an ample bosom, but they’re much bigger and get sore - naturally my OH is quite happy about the new fullness and firmness of the puppies, but he doesn’t have to carry them around all day!!)

I haven’t changed my diet and I’m not eating any more food than i do normally. As others have said, I too have always been pretty fortunate with my weight so I never put on more than a couple of pounds and can shift it easily. But this just doesn’t seem to be shifting, despite me trying to eat better and cut out/down some of the crappier stuff I might eat.

Even my OH asked if my pill was causing it because even he can see how bloated I am and the weight I’ve put on and said he’d only noticed a difference since I’ve been on this pill, so I know I’m not imagining it!

And to top it off my periods are still coming, they last longer and I’m having bad period pains throughout, something I never suffered on the combined pill.

Don’t know whether to go back to my GP and try another pill or stick this one out a bit longer and see if it calms down.

Can anyone recommend another mini pill to try (other than cerazette) that they’ve found less side effects with and that made your periods lighter/stop?

I’m so glad I found this thread. I’m on my second month of taking Cerazette and I do not recognise my self in the mirror. I’ve put on a stone of weight, my hirutism is coming back and feel like my skin and hair is not great. I look pregnant I’m so bloated and uncomfortable. I would be interested I. What other people have gone on to using. I was previously on dianette.

I came across this thread after googling weight gain for this particular appeal. I change to this pill about 18 months ago as I was in my 40s and the doctor said I needed to come off the combined pill. I first went on a different brand but it made me feel terrible so tried this one as the reviews I found online seem to be good however since being on this PO I have noticed that my weight has definitely gone up but my eating habits and my exercise hasn’t changed at all. It’s really difficult to know what to do as having no period it all his place but the weight gain and makes you feel really down and depressed. Plus there is the downside is that if you stop the pill Will the weight come off or will you be stuck with this weight gain forever. I have been considering for a while taking a break from these people to see whether it makes any difference and only time will tell if my painful periods end up coming back or not. Would be good to have other peoples advice and opinions on this appeal as the thread is quite old and thery must be more people suffering with this particular brand of people now.

I am 46 on the pill since I was 18 ( MH) no breaks. Always on a pill no period, then when I turned 35/36 they put me on cerezatte. I was okay no weight increase I've never done a diet before as was thin enough. I came off cerezatte Nov 2011 to conceive, by Feb I was pregnant. My son was born Nov 2012 and was back on pill I think a few days before Christmas. I've not had a break until 10th Dec gone. Two years forward 2014 weight wasnt an issue, fast forward another five ( to present) and I just cant shift it. Heavier now than I was while pregnant. Its ruining everything, I find it so hard to shift. Can anyone relate to this? Tia
