Has anyone out there had their results yet? My daughter auditioned for the first time this year and is very tense about the results. I know they will be here soon but has anyone heard already? Thanks!

janet41 Thu 05-Dec-13 06:22:35

No - our first time too; am thinking maybe today or tomorrow ??

DarkHorse2013 Thu 05-Dec-13 06:33:02

They should be out very soon, sometimes they send an email first so look out for that too. We have to wait a bit longer as my daughter is in U13s and they don't let them know until after this weekend which is the last course of the year. Extra stress!
Good luck!

cordobasarah Thu 05-Dec-13 10:23:57

My daughter auditioned for the U13s too but I didn't know they held the results of this one until after the coming weekend. There are all sorts of rumours my daughter gets hold of - that they tell existing members on the day of the last concert and new members possibly before - etc etc. Does anyone know if all the U13s have to wait till next week?
Thankyou - oh the stress!! Good luck everyone!

nosuchwordascant Thu 05-Dec-13 10:52:26

I spoke to them yesterday and they said letters were being sent out yesterday afternoon and today .....Good luck

cordobasarah Thu 05-Dec-13 18:31:55

Oh ok, thanks for that info. Nothing arrived today so I guess we just keep waiting......

nosuchwordascant Thu 05-Dec-13 21:49:50

Hopefully tomorrow :-)

DarkHorse2013 Fri 06-Dec-13 06:22:29

cordobasarah there are always rumours flying around! My daughter auditioned for Main, so in U13s this year and at the concert and course this weekend. We were told that they will find out next week after the concert for current members hoping for Main, I don't know if it's the same for new successful applicants or if they will find out today. Probably those auditioning for U13s will be told today too - good luck!

janet41 Fri 06-Dec-13 10:49:40

Well post arrived and no letter today for us - do they second class post for a 'no' ?

NomDeClavier Fri 06-Dec-13 11:07:27

I remember waiting for my own results years ago! Best of luck all round.

cordobasarah Fri 06-Dec-13 18:54:17

Hi, No results for us today yet either. I doubt they would second class one type and not the other, it would be very mean to do so! It looks like no-one out there has received their result yet?? So the wait goes on.......

janet41 Fri 06-Dec-13 21:52:30

Friends got their results today - two violins and both got places

GampyWabbit Fri 06-Dec-13 22:45:15

My dd has a place in the under 11s orchestra (violin) yay!! smile

Now, how much is this going to cost us?! shock

cordobasarah Sat 07-Dec-13 17:23:38

Well my daughter didn't get into the Main Orchestra, but is on the reserve list and has been offered a place in the regionals. She says "everyone who didn't get in will have been offered this". Does anyone know if that's true or not?
She's taken it fairly well apart from this and is determined to fight on another year.
Congratulations to everyone who has been successful!

maggiethecat Sat 07-Dec-13 17:58:44

Dd heard today - place in under 11 for violin (will look out for you Gampy!)
Last year it cost us about £700 for course alone - did not qualify for any bursary (and this excludes travelling!!)

CURIOUSMIND Sat 07-Dec-13 18:54:50

Many congratulations to children who got these hot places!
Do you need to be grade 6 solid distinction standard at least to get into under 11?

GampyWabbit Sat 07-Dec-13 19:12:27

I think it is £866 this year?? Ouch! We won't qualify either, but will rely on grandparents helping out! At least we can pay in instalments!

Curious - you don't need to have any grades to audition - just need to be playing at high enough level, from what I gather. There is a list on the website of grades held by people in each orchestra last yr I think!!

CURIOUSMIND Sat 07-Dec-13 22:33:55

I see Gampy, found the list about grade requirement on their website. Thank you!

maggiethecat Sun 08-Dec-13 00:27:38

I looked back at last year's paperwork and it was £788. But I can tell you that by the time we factored in travel from Scotland to her Wiltshire course and then on to the Birmingham gala concert, we must have spent at least double that figure!

GampyWabbit Sun 08-Dec-13 01:25:35

Oh no Maggie shock - will try not to think about the costs and hope grandparents will be very generous. What was the birmingham gala?

Red2003 Sun 08-Dec-13 11:20:33

Cordobasarah - my son has been offered the same - on reserve list for training orchestra and offered the South East Regional Orchestra. Have many others been offered the same?

janet41 Sun 08-Dec-13 12:48:45

We got reserve list for training and associate place for the northerlies; they def don't offer it to everyone as we have friends who have not been offered anything. I think it's a great idea and we are really pleased - DD is young and will be highly motivated by the monthly rehearsals and the concert.

maggiethecat Sun 08-Dec-13 21:53:27

I've just looked at the paperwork and it's £812 this year for under 11s.
Birmingham gala celebrated 35th year of NCO and was spectacular event. All orchestras played a bit of their end of course concert repertoire. But it was interesting to see the progression of orchestras. Dd was in training (they are only strings) and they played very well but it was good to be able to witness the jump in the standard of playing of the under 11s.
I just heard an excerpt of the under 13s playing Sibellius's Finlandia which I believe they played at their winter concert today and it was very moving. I have heard that piece played by another reputable children's orchestra but the NCO's was breathtaking.

GampyWabbit Mon 09-Dec-13 08:37:57

So, what do the regional rehearsals involve and are they worth doing? Our closest one is around 2hrs away. Also, what day do they happen on? Dd is already in a very good orchestra on Saturdays.

Now, very importantly - what happens about the NCO hoodies??! Dd would like to know when and how she gets one!! grin

Good luck to all those still waiting for results.

maggiethecat Mon 09-Dec-13 09:58:16

We never went to them. Our nearest one was a 3 hour train ride away and we did mean to do it but the first 2 were cancelled because of the snow this year and we then decided it was too much trouble.
I've heard that some children love them but I suppose it depends a lot on the orchestra - might be worth going to one and deciding. You don't have to continue if you don't wish to.
Check on NCO site to see when they meet up - some are Sat, others Sun.
You'll get information about ordering hoodies (you may well be able to order direct from the website because anyone can order a hoodie although I don't know if orders are seasonal). However, members get to have their name embroidered so I'd wait until receiving the information.

sugaraddict Tue 10-Dec-13 10:46:14

Has anybody who auditioned for U13's got their result yet? DD on tenterhooks expecting every day to be the day! Don't think she'll be able to stand the tension for much longer.

DuPanettoneDuVinDuFromage Tue 10-Dec-13 10:58:54

Getting excited reading this even though DD is still about 8 years too young to audition! fgrin I was in various NCO orchestras on violin to start with and then viola, and also in the Northerlies. It's so much fun, good luck to everyone still waiting and hope you and your DCs enjoy every minute of it! I had no idea how much it cost...my poor parents! fshock Will be getting DD started on the violin in a few years' time and really looking forward to it...

DarkHorse2013 Tue 10-Dec-13 12:10:44

Sugaraddict I know of one person who has been notified of not receiving a place in U13s, so perhaps they are sending out the good news a day later! Good luck!

DarkHorse2013 Tue 10-Dec-13 12:40:51

.... and the post has been today and still nothing. I am now doubly hoping that the bad news goes out first, as daughter's friend who was auditioning for the first time had a no yesterday. Stress!

maggiethecat Tue 10-Dec-13 23:06:24

Thinking of you DarkHorse, you'll know very soon!

sugaraddict Wed 11-Dec-13 16:14:20

Post just been and still nothing. Anybody else still waiting ?

FordPerfect Wed 11-Dec-13 16:42:11

We are still waiting to hear re Main Orchestra.

DarkHorse2013 Wed 11-Dec-13 17:15:15

Nothing here yet either ..... I think it's a bit mean making them wait this long ..... We are also waiting for an exam result so this is not helping!

bitsbots Wed 11-Dec-13 17:38:43

We've just got reserve list for under 11 and associate place for London Regional Orchestra today. The Royal Mail stamp date on the envelop is: 10.12.13.

As what I know those letters were posted last week for under 11. So, if you are still waiting -- the results may be in the post office!

GampyWabbit Wed 11-Dec-13 19:19:50

That is very mean. Our offer arrived on fri 6th - why are they sending them out on different days?

bitsbots Wed 11-Dec-13 21:49:00

GampyWabbit, I guess that they might have sent them all but the post office is too busy to process them all in one time during this busy period...anyway, we are quite happy with the result, considering DS has been learning oboe only for 1 year.

DarkHorse2013 Thu 12-Dec-13 14:19:38

FordPerfect have you heard yet? Wretched post has been and gone again with nothing, and some current U13s in daughters section were told yesterday they had been successful for Main. One had email notification and other had letters.
Getting very fed up with the way NCO handle the results every year - surely it would be simpler to email everyone so at least they all find out on the same day. This way is unnecessarily stressful for everyone. Starting to not care either way now, just want to know!

FordPerfect Thu 12-Dec-13 14:26:25

We haven't heard anything either and the post has been and gone. I agree that email might be a better way of ensuring that no one is left dangling.

DarkHorse2013 Thu 12-Dec-13 14:47:22

Silly way to do things - one year we had an email which gave the results and said that paperwork would follow, much better. Oh well - good luck and fingers crossed for all who STILL haven't heard .

sugaraddict Thu 12-Dec-13 14:57:55

Nothing here eithersad . DD has given up hope. Agreed, there must be a better way of handling this.

There's always tomorrow. ......

FordPerfect Thu 12-Dec-13 17:54:22

Someone else in our postal area has also not heard so perhaps it is a local sorting office thing.

GampyWabbit Fri 13-Dec-13 09:30:36

Good luck for today - hope it brings good news! smile

DarkHorse2013 Fri 13-Dec-13 10:18:14

Thank you GampyWabbit - our post doesn't come until 2pm so a bit more nail biting to do!

FordPerfect Fri 13-Dec-13 12:49:47

Post has arrived and a place was offered for the Main Orchestra. It was sent second class which perhaps explains the delay. Best of luck to DCs of DarkHorse2013 and sugaraddict.

DarkHorse2013 Fri 13-Dec-13 13:49:23

Congratulations FordPerfect - that's great news!
Our post has been and still nothing. I've now both emailed NCO and tried to phone, got an "on leave" autoreply and no-one is answering the phone.
Slightly fed up now!

sugaraddict Fri 13-Dec-13 13:56:26

Nothing here either Darkhorse. Have also been emailing with no response, DD will be so disappointed when she gets back from school.

DarkHorse2013 Fri 13-Dec-13 14:20:17

Hi sugaraddict - it's a bit much isn't it, mine will be unbearable until she finds out!
I just had a nice email reply (didn't say either way unfortunately) which says they were sent out 2nd class Tues/Weds this week, so they could arrive any time.
Fingers firmly crossed smile

sugaraddict Fri 13-Dec-13 14:36:24

Got to be tomorrow hasn't it? Wish they could just let us know by email and put everyone out of their misery. Good luck

sugaraddict Sat 14-Dec-13 13:09:57

Are we going to be the last ones to know? Still nothing so will have to wait to Monday nowsad

DarkHorse2013 Sat 14-Dec-13 17:46:32

Can't believe nothing today here either! One of daughter's friends heard yesterday that he hadn't been offered a place, so all results good and bad apparently still on their way. Oh well, roll on Monday!

Moominmammacat Sun 15-Dec-13 12:23:24

Nyo does it by email. Far better

DarkHorse2013 Mon 16-Dec-13 14:03:19

Well the envelope is here (hurray!) but unfortunately I'm under strict instructions not to open it until daughter is home from school...... I'm going to have to put it somewhere where I can't see it or temptation is going to get the better of me!
Will update later - hope everyone else's results arrive today too - good luck!

DarkHorse2013 Mon 16-Dec-13 17:07:33

Worth the wait - offered a place in Main Orchestra, she's so happy!
Anyone else still waiting had any results?

FordPerfect Mon 16-Dec-13 17:18:18

Congratulations to your DD.

maggiethecat Mon 16-Dec-13 17:23:14

yes!!! happy for you and dd.

sugaraddict Mon 16-Dec-13 17:42:38

Fantastic news Darkhorse!
Unfortunately we're still waiting here and apparently there's no one in the office who can help us until later in the week. I think DD is getting beyond caring

DarkHorse2013 Mon 16-Dec-13 17:46:08

Thank you all!
Sugaraddict I can't believe you're still waiting - your poor DD sad
I really hope it turns up tomorrow with good news - keeping my fingers crossed for her.

GampyWabbit Tue 17-Dec-13 13:07:24

Brilliant news!

It's the first time dd has auditioned for under 11 or Orchestra and she is understandably very excited. Now, I have a few questions - if people have auditioned before, have your dcs always had a place, or have they sometimes been declined? Have any been successful every year? What level are they or were they playing at each year??

I am interested as I know a child who is playing at a slightly higher level than dd, who was in the nco last yr, but didn't receive a place for the same orchestra as dd... Strange

DarkHorse2013 Tue 17-Dec-13 13:45:40

They must have something in particular that they are looking for, and it's obviously not always the level / grade that they are playing at that gets them the place. Daughter has been lucky enough to be in each orchestra, and while her grade standard probably was +1 each time round, her actual playing standard and experience needed to have developed much more.

There have certainly been some surprises and disappointments this time round that I know of - one from last year who is playing at a very high standard who wasn't offered a place. It seems to be all based on the actual audition process, so previous NCO orchestral participation perhaps isn't taken into account, and I know there are mixed views on this depending on whether you are auditioning for the first time or an existing NCO member.

It's a pretty tough process and I know a few really good young musicians that won't even attempt it!

NomDeClavier Tue 17-Dec-13 15:52:52

Congratulations to those with places grin

As the one who was auditioning I don't think they do take previous participation into account, unlike NYWO which is where I went on to. My second NYWO audition was a disaster and the director just looked at me and said 'I know you can play much better than that'. I also fluffed the sight reading which was a piece we'd played the previous year. I had a temp of 102 that day but I didn't tell them that.

NCO on the other hand, from memory, I had around a 50% success rate and definitely had a break of a year despite what I remember as a fairly good audition, so I think it really does come down to performance on the day and my teacher said I was well above the 'expected' level each time.

maggiethecat Thu 19-Dec-13 00:28:08

can't remember where I heard this - may have been anecdotally from Clarkson or Price - they are looking for that special something confused which probably goes beyond a high grade standard.

GampyWabbit Thu 19-Dec-13 09:39:01

Ok - good to know. Dd has a 'flair' and is definitely more of a performer than the more advanced child who didn't get in.

Now, I need to send the acceptance form back - should I send it recorded or will it be ok normal delivery?!

GampyWabbit Thu 19-Dec-13 10:44:57

Having said that, other child is amazing and it's a big shock to me that he didn't get in.

sugaraddict Mon 23-Dec-13 13:30:37

Finally managed to get an answer today as letter has been lost in post. After all that stress you can imagine DD is very disappointed only to be on reserve list for U13's. Have complained about process as would hate for any other child to have to go through those extra weeks of waiting.

DarkHorse2013 Tue 24-Dec-13 00:28:26

Sorry to hear that your news (when you eventually received it!) wasn't better, and hope your daughter gets over her disappointment. It is an awful process, ridiculous to send results by post this close to Christmas, and I have no idea why they didn't email like they did last year. Good that you have complained, I will be too, even though this is daughter's last year so we won't have to go through it again.

NannyPeach Sun 10-Aug-14 16:15:15

Nco concert dress help required please!!!

What shoes are suitable? They seem to have very specific requirements and we're trying to find the right shoes for the concert and school!

maggiethecat Mon 11-Aug-14 11:40:42

I don't seem to recall getting info this year. Emailed Geraldine and she confirmed same as last year - 3/4 sleeve white blouse, plain black shoes and white socks.
Last year they were very strict with shoes because of big 35th gala concert, so no embellishments etc.
This year perhaps not so strict and plain school shoes should do.

NannyPeach Mon 11-Aug-14 12:46:49

Dd has clarks Una Ivy shoes - do you think they will be plain enough?! There is a small bow on the front.

Have also made sure all tops and leggings fully cover her bottom!!! wink

maggiethecat Mon 11-Aug-14 13:29:24

Small bow should be fine plus the skirts are quite long and will probably cover detail.

NannyPeach Mon 11-Aug-14 13:49:52

If you get a chance to google una Ivy - please let me know what you think! I think they should be fine, but I don't know how strict they are for under 11 orchestra!

Is anyone beginning to think about auditioning for next year?!

maggiethecat Mon 11-Aug-14 14:16:38

had a look and they look ok. if they wanted flat pumps free of all embellishment they would have to specify that.

maggiethecat Mon 11-Aug-14 14:23:13

beginning to wonder if I've misplaced info - did you get specific info on concert wear or was this contained in an email/newsletter

NannyPeach Mon 11-Aug-14 14:40:53

I'm looking at the pages of info about the whole course - includes information on accommodation, personal kit & clothing etc.

For concert wear it says: plain, white 3/4 length blouse, shoes must be plain, lightweight, black slip-ins without any metallic embellishments, large bows or ribbons.

Also has info advising that bare midriffs and clothes that expose 'builders bums' not being acceptable for day to day wear! grin

maggiethecat Mon 11-Aug-14 14:59:40

Nanny, I definitely don't have that. Can you give me the approximate correspondence date and I will ask them to email me copy.

It would be easy to assume that everything is as last year but there may be course specific info.

thanks

maggiethecat Mon 11-Aug-14 15:08:27

Nanny, realise that info was sent out in January by email and I do have it. You can tell how much attention we have paid to the requirements contained therein!!

NannyPeach Mon 11-Aug-14 15:21:23

Probably the best way to be! Well, dd will take her new una Ivy's and last years school shoes, that have a smaller bow. They should be fine in my opinion!

maggiethecat Mon 11-Aug-14 16:51:58

Honestly think those shoes are fine
Dd has been stressing about the pieces. Unfortunately she had finished lessons when we got the purple patches so has had to figure things out herself. Not really paid attention to other stuff like talent show.
I've told her to go and enjoy herself and.have a god time with friends old and new.

Wafflenose Mon 11-Aug-14 17:04:28

DD1 is auditioning this year, hopefully for a place in the new Under 10s. She will still be 8 when she auditions, but only just, so this will be her first and last shot at U10s. We know what the chances are of getting in on flute (minimal - 6 places for the whole country) but I spoke to somebody at HQ the other day, and he told me that at Grade 4 it's worth her while having a go.

Did they actually use the words 'builders' bums'?! grin

janet41 Mon 11-Aug-14 17:36:07

Hi waffle I would have thought your dd would be more than qualified for a good shot at the under 10s; few 8 year olds will be grade 4 - most don't start wind instruments until 7/8/9 earliest. As min under 11s grade for flute was grade 4 than I would suspect it will be more like 2-5 for under 10s. My dd has done the regionals for cello this year, and was y grade 2 when she auditioned. She has decided to audion for cello and clarinet this year and is also 8. Definitely a very long shot as she has had very little time on the clarient yet - but she loved the regionals so much think she has decided to put herself out there! She will take the feedback in a healthy fashion thankfully.

Wafflenose Mon 11-Aug-14 17:43:22

I think mine will be OK with a no, and respond well to the feedback too. She auditioned for South West Music School a couple of months ago, so it won't be her first ever audition.

DD2 plays the cello as well. She started in March when she was 5, and is doing Initial Grade (and Grade 1 Recorder) at Christmas.

janet41 Mon 11-Aug-14 17:50:51

Waffle - sounds like two very musical children. Dd also did the NSSO this year - she did the Young Course for age 8-13, roughly grade 5 to 8 playing standard. Absolutely brilliant and she highly recommends it.

NannyPeach Mon 11-Aug-14 20:12:24

Yes Waffle - they really did!!!

Maggie - what section is your dd in? Mine is violin and has been working on the purple patches a bit - some of them have tricky rhythms!

Anyone have a child in under 12s - what level pieces did they audition with?

Wafflenose Mon 11-Aug-14 20:31:50

LOL NannyPeach - was trying to work out how else one could word it. 'Arse-showing shorts'? Perhaps not!!

maggiethecat Mon 11-Aug-14 21:12:01

Nanny, she's violin. She's first violin this year and says she has to play in high positions a lot, prefers second violin.

NannyPeach Sat 16-Aug-14 07:59:56

Big day tomorrow for under 11s!!! My dd is very excited!

Any recommendations for things to pack (in addition to concert clothes, clothes etc)? Dd wondered if she could take her loom bands?

Jealousbody Sat 16-Aug-14 09:29:20

Try pouches of sharing sweets like Skittles or Maltesers; a torch; a book; a frisbee (?) as quite often the boys disappear off to play football; definitely loom bands... Depends where it is as the food and outdoor facilities vary. Lightweight rain jacket. Fingers of fudge, muesli bars and if she wants to take part in the talent show something for her 'act', some of them detest the talent show especially as they repeat it every year so don't force her in that direction. We always did things like savlon and insect bite cream and a box of plasters. Some bring joke insects and things to play tricks on social staff... Sometimes they like to bring their tutor a minding but a blank thank you card the whole section can sign would be enough. Haven't been for few years but wouldn't imagine it has changed much.

NannyPeach Sat 16-Aug-14 11:07:28

Great ideas - thank you! She has already said "NO!" When I asked if she wanted to do the talent show!! Suitcase is packed, just need to sort the extra bits now. She will love to take her loom bands. She is taking the 11+ in September, so I have been a bit mean and will send a couple of the 10 minute test books - I hope she can manage to spare 10 minutes to get the done each day!

Jealousbody Sat 16-Aug-14 12:43:13

Mine would not have bothered with the test books.
Forget frisbee .... Wrong course and child...

At NCO it is hide and seek that is the big thing.

Maybe a watch or tiny travel alarm as their electronic gadgets are confiscated and only given to them for short intervals so they don't necessarily know the time. To be honest they are pretty much consumed by rehearsals and timetables so don't think of home that much so expect very few texts

Wafflenose Sat 16-Aug-14 15:28:36

Ooh, have fun everyone!

maggiethecat Sun 17-Aug-14 10:03:47

Dd has left already with Dh- forgot the watch! Anyhow, she'll see what others are doing.
They are working at least 5 hours a day so I've told her to enjoy the breaks and have fun.

maggiethecat Mon 18-Aug-14 20:52:31

Nanny how did it go? Dd went down with her dad and am told she was disappointed with her desk arrangement. I had told her to be happy with wherever she was placed because everyone has a part to play and most of all to enjoy making beautiful music.
Finally heard from her this evening - in good spirit because she was with lots of chums.

NannyPeach Tue 19-Aug-14 14:52:46

Maggie - the 3 hr drive down was great - driving home on my own took longer hmm. Dd very happy and settled - enjoying using her new phone to call us in the afternoon! From what I gathered, the children would be swapped around the desks quite a bit and strong players equally front and back and 1st/2nd violins. I saw some of the Facebook page pictures yesterday when dd was further back, but close front today, so who knows where they'll be on the day!

maggiethecat Thu 21-Aug-14 08:36:24

Good that dd is settled. They're working hard but having fun too - I need to take a page from that book!!

maggiethecat Fri 29-Aug-14 17:46:45

How did your dd find it Nanny?

Grayt1234 Mon 15-Sep-14 08:25:07

Just found out yesterday at regional rehearsal that girl Associate members won't be provided with a red skirt for the regional concert but have to wear black trousers instead?? Dd is really upset (she's 10): says it's 'rubbing in that they aren't good enough' sad I feel bad for her and upset that NCO thinks it's ok to distinguish between the players at the concert. What has happened at past regional concerts in terms of clothing requirements? Is this normal?

ohtobeanonymous Sat 27-Sep-14 17:58:06

Gray...yes that is usual, Im afraid. Remind her how many don't even get to be Associate members!! Hope she is still enjoying the experience of the regional orchestra she is in and has a fab concert.

janet41 Sat 27-Sep-14 18:54:18

Gray - dd i n same position but Roger Clarkson went out of his way earlier in the year to make sure she knew that everyone at the regionsls deserved to be in the nco, biut they can only take so many on the courses. So she is chilled about the skirt; she has loved the regionals so much. Is your dd auditioning again?

grayt1234 Sat 27-Sep-14 19:25:12

Thanks for your replies. These are both good points to make to her and I know once she gets there she will love being in the concert. Yes, janet41, she is auditioning again as she has LOVED the experience - it's been a pleasure to watch her grow this past year! Is your daughter auditioning again too?

janet41 Sat 27-Sep-14 19:33:38

Yes next week!

grayt1234 Sat 27-Sep-14 20:10:19

good luck!! smile
