dd was enrolled this week - where do you put the badges (pack , six etc). Do we need to buy a sash ?

I sew mine on to the sleeve of the Brownie hoody my daughter has. Other people buy a special sash.

scienceteacher · 27/02/2009 18:16

They go on the sash.

Make sure you get the new wider one though and not the old one, which is much skinnier! More room for badges!

I bought a sash for DD and then realised everyone else sews them on their gilet. The sash is a bugger to get the needle through as well.......maybe ask Snowy Owl what the other girls do?

I wouldn't bother buying a sash - if you're anything like me they won't get further than the shelf in the kitchen

Put ours on a sash, but they are horrible to sew on.

Ditto chrustywhisty.
I have broekn a number of needles and cut my fingers sewing the damned things on.

Sorry christywhisty.

DD2 has a narrow sash. It is now full and she hates it anyway because it keeps falling down. I am going to buy her a gilet and laboriously resew all the badges onto that.

In theory, each Brownie can decide what to do with her badges - sew on gilet, hoodie or sash or store in her Brownie box - but each pack seems to have its own preferred option.

DD has a sash. Must be the narrow one as it's likely to be full by the time she's 8 and we'll have to start again. I'm a Guider and really should have known better.

My DD1 had a sash and I stitched a little square of velcro on the underside of the sash and on the shoulder of her gilet this meant it didnt slip down but she could remove it if she needed.

DD2 has then all over her sleeves of her sweatshirt.

It was easy in teh old days. They all went onthe sleeves of your little brown cotton dress.....

Report
MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 04/03/2009 22:18

Yes, Slightly, but now I am a mother and a Guider I think how impractical that dress was - my mother washed and ironed it every week. Our Brownies spend a lot of time rolling around on the floor and a dress would be indecent!

Sew them straight onto a camp blanket! Much easier. DD had dozens that had to be sewn onto her blanket when she left Brownies. Took nanny me hours!

|I guess they are too thick to use a machine with?

I haven't had any to do yet - as they only started in January and haven't taken thei promise yet - when are they likely to do that?

Report
MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 04/03/2009 22:33

I think a machine might work, especially if you use a larger, tougher needle.

The Promise is normally a few weeks after they join. Have they finished the Becoming a Brownie booklet? What has Brown Owl said?

Report
SlightlyMadScotland · 04/03/2009 22:36

Brwon owl hasn't said anything. What d they have to do with the "becoming a brownie book"? Is that the pink spiral bound one. I thought it was just like a brownie annual with fun and game stuff in. I didn't realise they had to do anything (other than learn the promise and brownie guide law...whcih they have been doing).

Maybe your pack doesn't use it, but Becoming a Brownie is a little booklet (not spiral bound, that's either the Brownie Adventure or the Badge book) in which they write down what they're looking forward to about Brownies, the names of everyone in their six, who their buddy is and do little quizzes, puzzles and activities about Brownies. It also has the original Brownie story in it, which they ought to read or have read to them.

And are you sure that your daughters haven't made their Promise in a five minute quickie? We make a big deal of it and invite parents, but not everybody does. The reason I ask is that we don't hand out the Brownie Adventure book - which it sounds as if your daughters have already got - until the Promise has been made. But, again, that may just be our quirk!

Packs do do things differently, so ask Brown Owl or another leader.

they got 2 books on their first night (when I paid fees) - so def not after making promise. The yellow gadge book and the Brownie adventure sounds about right for the pink one.

I thought they got a badge and box once they made their promise - which they def don't have.

I will ask next week.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 05/03/2009 19:15

Yes, the badge is given as part of the Promise ceremony (and the box too, in packs which use it).

Let us know next week if Brown Owl doesn't answer all your questions.

The problem with the gilet is that is the most revolting shade of acid yellow.

I machine badges onto the sash. It means that we have to save them up for a bit before it is worth threading the machine - and I am anal about getting the right shade of thread to match the edge of the badge with a brown bobbin thread for the underside.

DD1 has a Guide camp blanket - so that is easy. DD2 will be moving up to Guides in September and wants all her Brownie badges transferred.

I was looking at a USA Girl Scout website (a uniform supplier) and they sold a special glue for fixing the badges (patches). I think I might invest in some. I remember using UHU glue for my own Guide badges, even though I was a reasonably skilled sewer for that age.

Every brownie pack is different. In our pack we give the girls their brownie box and sash when they make their promise. Yes I'd recommend the wide one as you fit more badges on.

When my daughter moved upto guides and wanted the badges moved, I cheated a little and put the whole sash onto her camp blanket.

Washing the sash makes it easier to sew badges on.

We gave a sash (with the first few badges sewn on using my machine!) but gilets were banned. We were quite strict about uniform though...

Sashes, by the way, can be cut in 2 at the shoulder and then form 2 edges of a camp blanket. Thus no need to transfer everything! Regards her camp blanket fondly

WTF are gilets? My DD's go on the sash (will have to be on the inside soon!)

And I DID look indecent in my little brown dress (and beret) back in the 70's
