Recommendations for lightweight but robust violin case?

Non-extortionate, if possible.

Need an oblong case for an 11yo post G5 player to take to secondary school a couple of days a week. Violin is worth about £1k, so don't want rock bottom cheap, but don't want to pay hundreds for a professional standard case either.

The lighter the better, her current case is quite heavy and is proving a bit of a trial to cart around.

I know nothing about violin cases, but I wonder if fibreglass ones, with a foam lining, might be strong and reasonably light?

There are many suppliers on Google, so I would search there.

Here is one site:

By the way: 'No134' was the bus that used to take me to Muswell Hill, forty years ago!

I got a lovely one from Tone Deaf but it seems to be discontinued. They are out there, keep looking! My violin is worth about 4K, btw, and I have never spent more than £100 on a case. Really not necessary! My cheapo from Tone Deaf even has a hygroscope! Mine is back pack style, btw, so really good to carry.

Ferguson - yes, the 134 still goes to Muswell Hill! Though [eek] at having been caught out at naming my latest alias after a bus route. Blush

In the interests of updating, in case anyone else has the same question, I was going to get a Tom And Wills one, which get a good write-up, except that one or two reviews talked about the bow only just fitting in, and her bow is slightly over 74cm long. So we got a Primavera case instead with hi-viz stripes on the back.

The fibreglass ones look lovely, and in fact my research suggested that BAM are the make to get for best performance, but I didn't want to spend upwards of £100 for a case. Will try and remember to update when the thing actually arrives.

Tom and will case didn't fit ds2's violin. I thought his violin was pretty standard, but too tight a squeeze. I can't remember what we got as we got it from a friend who supplies string stuff, so he tried a few cases out.

Glad we didn't order the Tom and Will one then!

This is the one we got: Primavera case. It arrived today and I'm impressed, actually - violin fitted in nicely (and hers is slightly chunkier than some), plenty of room for the bow (space for 4 bows!) and I really like the hi-viz bands and piping on the back for walking home on dark winter evenings.

Full-length pocket for music as well. Zips seem a bit stiff, but I'm guessing they will get smoother with use.
