My DD is applying to do a Music Scholarship next term for a secondary school. Apart from rehearsing her pieces, what else does she need to do to prepare? Thank you.

Best to ask the music dept of the school in question as requirements do differ between schools. All schools we have looked at have been really helpful and most have audition requirements on their website.

Some just want pieces, most want sight-reading as well, some want scales appropriate to the grade of the candidate, some have a written paper too.

She may well have some sort of interview or chat with the Head of Music too. Be prepared for questions like what sort of music does she like listening to, favourite composers, favourite performers on her instrument, has she been to any live music concerts, does she play or sing in any groups - basically can she demonstrate a genuine interest and commitment to music, as well as being able to jump through the standard hoops.

What Clobbered said!

Also, she might be coached on a sight reading piece to see how she takes direction from a teacher.

shop.rhinegold.co.uk/products/scholarships-2015 ... this Scholarships Guide has just been published and offers plenty of sound advice. Think you can download it ... very, very different standards and demands between schools.

Just a quick update to say a huge thank you all for your help. I didn't have a clue where to start so this thread and suggestions really helped. DD was awarded 2 Music Scholarships. It came down to how she played her instruments on the day, various musicianship tests and the interview.
