You will probably not find many people who will respond to this, the skating world is incredibly small, you can walk into a rink at the other end of the country and bump into people you know so it is very very easy to out yourself. Plus it is very much a niche sport. There are specific skating forums for both the hockey and figure world so people tend to gravitate there. Tbf that would be because most people would not know the difference between Jonkers rules, x-ice or checking vs non-checking.
What age group does ds play? or is he just learning the basics atm?

I would LOVE for my boys to start playing ice hockey but don't think there are any clubs around here (Sussex).

Hope your DS gets in well with it!

Guildford have a team if you are that side of Sussex.

Gillingham Rink Ice Hockey

Guildford have a very good junior system.

etttvatre · 13/10/2015 20:13

Both Gillingham and Guildford are over an hours drive away from me unfortunately, but thanks!

HockeyKidTamer · 14/10/2015 06:37

Unfortunately this is very common in hockey world and it is not uncommon for a 4 hr drive to a fixture. Ds trains at a rink 2 hrs away but thankfully his club only train 1x wk. Other clubs train 2 or 3 times a week, which would make the journey impossible. It is the problem with niche sports, but without increased uptake there is no need to build more venues so really catch 22.

Would Gosport Rink be closer for you?

ukgirlatheart · 14/10/2015 14:02

DS just started. We have a rink and takes us 25mins traffic being good that is. Hockey Kid Tamer - can you let me know of any forums you would recommend?

What does Conference mean in ice hockey keep hearing parents at the rink say "my DS been asked to play for Conference"

Not sure I tend to avoid the forums tbh. I get enough politics without going to look for it and the information that I want on training drills etc can be found without having to face them. Pinterest has some interesting hockey links, some very good, also the USA website has some brilliant off ice stick handling drills and stuff. Youtube also is a wealth of knowledge but some better than others.

Conference is basically Regionals. Each region (midlands/southern/northern) has a conference team, this is basically kids who have been selected by their team as being good enough to try out, they then go to the conference trials to try out, selection goes right up to the point of the conference game weekend so just because they have been selected at this stage of the season, it does not mean the will make the cut for the final team. Kids are assessed on ability and coachability. Kids who are talented enough in theory (in some age groups/region) might not make the cut simply because of their attitude. Being in conference can help bring players to the attention on the GB selectors and from there they can be invited for GB trials. or at least that is my understanding of it. In theory it is absolutely brilliant to have your kid selected for conference but the costs can be huge and the training hours late and in distant location. And not all players handle the environment and the associated pressure/rejection well. That said for some players it is an amazing experience that they get huge amounts from so totally worth the investment (time and money)

Conference is different to nationals which is the top two teams of each league (at the end of the season) going to a tournament where they play for the national title for their age group.
