ZOMBIE THREAD ALERT: This thread hasn't been posted on for a while.
Can I download ABRSM exam music? (grade 1 clarinet)(21 Posts)
I hope it went well, it's over now anyway.
I think ABRSM would probably say that you should have checked the syllabus when you applied tbh. Though they may be more lenient with overseas centres, although be aware that he'll probably be marked down. Assume you're aware of scales, aural and sight reading required?
Good luck in any case.
Hi everyone sorry not to be back earlier we lost all internet access for the day!
thanks for the ideas
I do realise I wasn't clear when I asked if I could download it but I am quite happy to pay for it and expecting to. I don't download music and movies and stuff from the internet at all so don't really use the lingo much!! (I am always intending to get to grips with it though!)
Anyway we went to town and tried all the music shops we could find and none of them have it or can get it in time.
Accompanist has just emailed me asking if I have it yet lol!!
So the idea about asking the ABRSM is great so thanks for that, because if they can't solve the problem then they can't really expect me to can they?
thanks again Ishould we did see the syllabus once ages ago so have some idea what is required funnily enough neither of us remember seeing that you needed to play accompanied .....
I will update you if we get anywhere (internet permitting)
exam is Thursday here (kind of Wed there)
I have known examiners give 0/30 for pieces which were played from a photocopy, and also 0/30 for when the candidate had the real copy but the pianist did not. They are quite within their rights to do this, and do have very strict no-photocopying rules.
I hope you get it sorted out, it's a horrible situation to be in. Exams can be stressful enough without this to contend with as well. Do you have a local AB rep? They may be able to advise you, and perhaps given your geographical situation may let your son play unaccompanied once they know the problem.
Musicroom.com is incredibly fast. See if they have an email/ phone number in your country and talk to them?
But yes, pupils can play unaccompanied in an absolute emergency.
I'm hoping that someone has managed to help you out of your sticky situation. You'll get this in all his exams, two pieces accompanied, one (list C) unaccompanied. If you couldn't look at the syllabus do you know about the structure of the exam - pieces, scales, aural, sight reading?
Ask on the ABRSM forum if anyone has the music?
I have a colleague who enters kids every session for ABRSM and uses only photocopies for their music and the accompaniment, it has never been challenged at all!

They seem to have a New Zealand representative - firstname.lastname@example.org. Perhaps they can advise on music stockists in NZ who can deliver faster?
I realise it's late for you and my dd1 is sitting her G1 piano in 10 days. Her piano teacher has been her accompanist in her 3 violin exams.
I'll ask and send you a message to pick up when I know. I do wonder if asking the accompanist you have to ask amongst her/his colleagues would help?
Hi op, no if you make a mistake don't restart just carry on. Your best option is probably to borrow an accompaniment somehow as they don't accept photocopies. I believe however that if a candidate turns up without an accompanist through no fault of their own that the examiner is still obliged to mark them but a letter of complaint will be sent to the teacher ( so the teacher is ticked off, not the candidate). It might be worth a phone call or email to abrsm to check this though - they are generally very helpful. Good luck with it all!
Hi thank you all so much, the teacher thing is complicated, my husband forced the exam issue, the teacher has never entered anyone before for this exam. As is typical of my husband he has an idea but leaves someone else (me!) to spend hours trying to make it happen! So i don't blame the teacher i have tried to look at the syllabus several times but we are still on dialup and it is such rubbish that we usually can't download things, again tonight I can get nothing off the ABRSM site! My great hope was that I could download them online.
It just never crossed my mind that he would need to be accompanied, he has never played accompanied.
We have found another clarinet teacher but they only have someone doing grade two and the books are relatively new as you know so I don't think anyone else will have them.
i had heard about the photocopying thing, I was hoping that since dc has the book they would just check his stuff not the accompanist, I did wonder whether we could get round that by borrowing the book of the guy who went in before us, but I am not even sure whether he will be doing the same exam, (plus I do think I should give the accompanist it beforehand , he has to transpose it as well!!!!)
weegie it would be fantastically kind if you could ask, I won't be able to reply straight away it is after 1 am here but I will reply later.
In particular can you ask if they have to have an accompanist?
we haven't yet found anyone with a wealth of experience of the exams here!
ABRSM are (understandably) very hot on music copyright issues. Therefore you will not be permitted to use a photocopy, or any other sort of printed-out version, of the music in the exam. (Unless you obtain permission from the copyright holder in advance, which I imagine would be very tricky.)
For practising purposes, I'm willing to bet that there's a MNer here somewhere who could scan the music and email it to you. Unfortunately I don't have grade 1 here, otherwise I would.
For the exam, your best bet is to borrow a hard copy from another pupil.
My dcs piano teacher is here tonight, also teaches clarinet. I'll ask her about your options if that would help?
The examiner won't accept a photocopy either btw.
That's pretty poor of your teacher not to let you know they need to accompanied...
ABRSM do not supply music on-line.
Can you ask the clarinet teacher to put out a call to all her students - one of them must still have the piano part. Otherwise I think you'd have to make a big trek into the nearest town if at all possible.
Do you have an accompanist lined up.
Keep going if you make a mistake. Do abrsm shop do downloads? You can download some of the accompaniments as mp3s so if you had a good pianist they could work from that but I don't think clarinet is included.
Mine has been told to keep going if she makes a mistake.
Not sure about downloading it - are there other kids doing the exam at the same time.
You could borrow from one of them ??
Or borrow from the teacher ??
For practice YouTube has the accompaniment piano pieces - my dd is practicing at the moment with that playing in the background.
Hi thanks so much everyone for answering my previous question your answers were such a relief for me, however I now have a serious problem.
My dc is sitting this exam in about 10 days, with great difficulty I got hold of the book however I had no idea some of the pieces were accompanied since he has always played solo so I got the plain book of pieces.
I have just been told that he needs to be accompanied, we have found someone to accompany him but I am unable to find the book anywhere. (the complicating factor is that we currently live in rural New Zealand so all the usual places I would try like Amazon/book depository are out of the question because of postage times)
I have had a google and can not find the scores for piano accompaniment anywhere but thought you guys might have some ideas.
I have been looking at previous threads and am also unsure whether you can stop and restate if you make a mistake or should just keep going, so would really appreciate it if you know the answer to that too)
thanks and enjoy the weekend
