30 min exercise for 30 days - join me?

This is something I'm doing via an initiative at work. The aim is to do 30 min exercise every day for 30 (working) days. Start date is June 2nd - end date is July 11. On a busy day you are allowed to do 3x10 mins or 2x15 mins instead of 1x30 mins. I'm supposed to keep a journal - hence the thread.

I thought it sounded like such a good idea that I wanted to share it. Anyone want to join me?

OublietteBravo Mon 02-Jun-14 20:15:07

Once DH arrived home I DD and DS with him and went swimming. I haven't been to our local pool in ages - which is crazy as it is a 5 min walk away. My aim was to do ~1.5 km (or 45 lengths of a 33 m pool). I actually managed ~2 km (or 60 lengths). I'm quite tired now, but pleased I can still manage it (I used to swim 3-4 times a week until DH changed job and started commuting). I think I might take things a bit easier tomorrow though!

OublietteBravo Tue 03-Jun-14 18:45:15

A bit more gentle today. A brisk 20 min walk to take DS to football, then a 10 min run to collect DD from athletics and finally a gentle 15 min walk home. Hopefully enough to count as 30 mins. Not sure I'd want to leave the car at home for the various pick-ups and drop-offs every week though...

mckenzie Tue 03-Jun-14 18:47:02

Good for you OB. Keep it up.

OublietteBravo Wed 04-Jun-14 20:21:57

Back to swimming today. I had to fit a quick session in between DH getting back from work and heading out to play touch rugby. This left me with 55 mins to get to the pool, get changed, swim, get changed and get home. Good job the pool is only 5 mins away! Anyway, I managed a mile (or 42 lengths).

No idea how I'm going to fit in 30 mins tomorrow, as DD has swim squad before school, I have choir at lunchtime, and I have to collect DD and DS from different sides of town after work. Plus DH has just mentioned that he'll be back late as he is going out with a friend after work. Does choir count? I'll be on my feet singing for an hour... With occasional swaying, clapping and dancing.

mckenzie Thu 05-Jun-14 13:45:54

You can work out in your garden at home. Squats, sit ups, press ups, lunges. Use a chair to do dips. Do you have a skipping rope?

OublietteBravo Thu 05-Jun-14 20:24:12

I just spent 30 mins prancing around in my kitchen whilst listening to Pulp. I picked 10 exercises and did each one for a minute, and cycled through them 3 times. A mixture of body circuits and (very) light weights (from my rowing days - found in the bottom of my wardrobe). Sit ups and lunges are OK, but press ups are a struggle, and burpies are torture (but then I seem to remember they always were).

TheDayOfMyDoctor Thu 05-Jun-14 20:26:41

I was just wondering if I had the energy to do any exercise tonight (started a 4-week get in shape for holidays mission earlier this week), and after reading this I'm off to get on the exercise bike! Beats the ironing anyway grin

OublietteBravo Thu 05-Jun-14 20:32:52

Ugh - ironing. I'd much rather prance around in my kitchen for another 30 mins! Really should get round to doing some though, you've inspired me to go and get the ironing board out.

Imagine that - fitter and uncreased wink

TheDayOfMyDoctor Thu 05-Jun-14 21:26:07

That's my 30 minute cycle done. 4 nights in a row. That's more exercise than I've done in the last 4 years! The ironing pile hasn't magically disappeared sadly... Ironing must burn a couple of calories I suppose grin

OublietteBravo Thu 05-Jun-14 22:03:30

Well done! I managed 5 shirts, 4 pairs of trousers and a summer dress. Still plenty of ironing to go, but at least I made a start.

TheDayOfMyDoctor Thu 05-Jun-14 22:24:32

I didn't get to the ironing unsurprisingly!

What do you have planned for your 30 mins tomorrow?

I have discovered an added benefit to my evening cycle - I'm drinking a lot more water and because I'm having a shower at night, I'm taking a bit of time to use a face oil, do some body brushing and use a light tanning moisturiser - all goals I was struggling to get round to. So even though I'm only four nights in I'm feeling a lot better in myself.

mckenzie Fri 06-Jun-14 14:27:08

Well done you. It's nice doing body lotion at bed time isn't it?
OB, would you like to be ableto do press ups?

OublietteBravo Fri 06-Jun-14 19:24:18

Another 30 mins prancing around in the kitchen. Slightly less aerobic exercises and slightly more light weights. I'm pleased that I've managed the first 5 days - only 25 days to go!

The main benefit for me is snacking less. I'm most likely to snack when I get in from work and I'm sorting out supper for DD and DS. If I know I'm going to exercise, I hold off.

I'm debating whether to have both Sat and Sun as rest days. I think I'll rest tomorrow and see how I'm feeling on Sunday. DC have a party to go to, so I should have time to swim.

OublietteBravo Fri 06-Jun-14 19:25:54

I'm not bothered whether I can do press-ups or not. I used to be able to (I rowed very seriously during my PhD - 30+ hours training per week), and now I can only do about 5

TheDayOfMyDoctor Fri 06-Jun-14 19:28:31

I've been deliberating a rest day too. I did walk up a big hill today on the way home though, so that was 15 minutes at least!

TheDayOfMyDoctor Fri 06-Jun-14 19:29:25

Snacking less here too - I'm put off by the thought of undoing my good work.

OublietteBravo Fri 06-Jun-14 19:41:28

I won't be completing the ironing tonight. I quite fancy a wine tonight (once I've had a shower, and picked DD up from her school disco).

TheDayOfMyDoctor Fri 06-Jun-14 20:18:32

I'm going to do a little bit of ironing then wine (but no snacks grin)

OublietteBravo Fri 06-Jun-14 20:26:15

Good luck with the ironing - you will definitely have earned wine.

Well done on the hill. I used to live at the top of a and remember how much energy getting back home used to take (and I always seemed to be walking into the wind - even if I'd had the wind in my face on the way down the hill in the morning).

OublietteBravo Sun 08-Jun-14 20:43:42

After having a rest day yesterday, I went back to circuits in the kitchen today. I did the same mix as Friday. Hoping to go for a swim tomorrow, but I need DH back from work before 7pm to make it happen (the pool shuts at 8pm on a Monday).

OublietteBravo Mon 09-Jun-14 20:15:53

I really didn't want to bother tonight. It took me an hour to get home this evening rather than the usual 20 mins. The main road was shut due to a gas leak, so I had to go the long way round. I was late collecting DS from after school club - his teacher was ever so nice about it (it is only the 2nd time I've ever been late in the 6 years I've had kids at the school). I was really feeling hot and bothered and stressed when I finally got home, and not at all motivated.

However, I made myself go to the pool, and I now feel relaxed but tired. I managed 2km (or 60 lengths). It was harder work this week.

A week in, I'm definitely into the stage where I'm starting to feel tired and a bit sore. I'm looking forward to coming out the other side and feeling fitter - I expect that is 2-3 weeks away though.

OublietteBravo Tue 10-Jun-14 19:18:43

Today I did:
20 min walk (DS to football)
10 min run (collect DD)
10 min walk (home)
20 min circuits
Looking forward to having a shower - I'm quite sweaty and want to wash the pollen off as my eyes are really itching.

TheDayOfMyDoctor Tue 10-Jun-14 20:25:06

Well done! I've been very lax over the weekend, but now about to get back on the exercise bike for 30 mins. I definitely noticed a difference in my overall energy levels last week so keen to get back to it!

TheDayOfMyDoctor Tue 10-Jun-14 21:04:28

Right, that's half an hour of interval training on the exercise bike. Now I just need to get my breath before I have the energy to get upstairs for a shower.

OublietteBravo Thu 12-Jun-14 20:09:36

Well done for keeping the training going, and getting back into the swing if things after the weekend.

I was rather lax yesterday. I had a team building day with work followed by dinner. Apart from spending 90 mins wandering around Cambridge on a treasure hunt I did no exercise at all.

I got back to circuits thus evening. I even added another 5 minutes of time, so I'm up to 35 minutes rather than 30. It doesn't seem to hurt as much now, so my body must be starting to get used to being more active.

TheDayOfMyDoctor Thu 12-Jun-14 21:05:14

Lax here yesterday too - home late after a tough day. However I was chuffed to discover this morning I'd lost half a stone in the last week grin so I was very motivated to get on my exercise bike for another 30 minute stint!

Well done on the extra five minutes. I'm not yet feeling I can push myself harder but I do feel like I get a good workout in my 30 mins for now.

OublietteBravo Fri 13-Jun-14 20:57:04

Half a stone in a week is brilliant - well done! I kind of wish I'd thought to weigh/measure myself before I started.

Tonight I completed another 35 mins of circuits. I've now managed 10 exercise sessions since I started on 2nd June, and I'm feeling quite pleased with myself.

The next few days are going to be tricky though. My parents are coming to stay and will need entertaining, plus I'm away on a training course on Monday and Tuesday. I'm not quite sure how exercise will fit in.

I'm certainly going to have a rest day this weekend - probably Sunday. Off for a shower and then maybe a small wine now...

TheDayOfMyDoctor Fri 13-Jun-14 23:28:25

Well done! We're going away for the w/e so I'm unlikely to get any proper exercise in, but I'll be back on it on Monday!

OublietteBravo Mon 16-Jun-14 21:57:15

The weekend kind of passed me by (I think parents require more entertaining than children).

Today didn't start well - my car was almost an hour late (because they got the wrong house number). I've been in a course a day with very few breaks. However I made myself go to the gym between the afternoon session and dinner. I spent 30 mins on the rowing machine.

Hoping to go for a swim tomorrow morning, but will need to be up very early to achieve this.

OublietteBravo Tue 17-Jun-14 08:42:22

I managed to make myself get up early and swim before breakfast. I think I managed about 1.5km - difficult to tell in an unfamiliar pool.

OublietteBravo Wed 18-Jun-14 22:13:46

Just 30 mins of circuits tonight. Feeling really tired (and had to work until 8.30pm to get instructions to the US before close of business there).

No idea how to fit 30 mins on tomorrow. DD has swim squad before school, and we have several people coming round to eat and watch the England v Uruguay match from 6.30pm (plus I have meetings all say at work as my group head is visiting from the US).

OublietteBravo Fri 20-Jun-14 21:42:42

I didn't manage to fit in anything yesterday. Back to 30 mins of circuits in the kitchen this evening. Feeling really tired - it's been a long week. (My sweepstake teams are doing well - I have Columbua and Costa Rica).

Need to fit in some exercise over the weekend . Next week is already looking tricky as DH is away on business from Sunday evening until Thursday evening, so I will either have to exercise at home or take the DC with me.

OublietteBravo Sun 22-Jun-14 14:44:24

I managed to make it to the pool today (last chance for a while as DH is about to leave for his training course). It was surprisingly quiet - I got the fast lane to myself for about 30 mins of my swim. I clocked up 60 lengths (~2 km).

Definitely time for lunch - I'm starving!

TheDayOfMyDoctor Mon 23-Jun-14 11:23:53

Well done for your efforts! I completely failed to keep up my regime last week so time to start again tonight hmm. Everything has been crazy busy here lately.

OublietteBravo Mon 23-Jun-14 20:57:12

I can relate to crazy busy - I'm finding it difficult to make time for exercising at the moment.

Today I went back to circuits, but increased the time to 40 mins. I'm feeling a hot and sweaty, so I'm going to treat myself to a ice cream.

OublietteBravo Tue 24-Jun-14 20:42:03

I tried an exercise DVD for the first time ever this evening (one of my colleagues lent me the 30 say shred). Actually found it easier than I expected (presumably due to 3 weeks of exercising). I'll be interested to see how much I ache tomorrow...

OublietteBravo Wed 25-Jun-14 21:11:32

This evening I took DD and DS swimming - not Presley possible to swim lengths and supervise the kids though. Followed the same exercise DVD once they were in bed (and added some plank exercises afterwards). Definitely ready to eat now!

OublietteBravo Thu 26-Jun-14 18:03:52

Presley?! Don't know where that came from! Meant to type really.

OublietteBravo Thu 26-Jun-14 21:24:09

30 mins of circuits tonight (and DH is back home - hooray). Also done some plank exercises to counteract the chocolate I ate earlier

OublietteBravo Fri 27-Jun-14 21:08:57

Exercise DVD tonight (30 day shred is easier than my usual circuits and I was feeling lazy). Trying to decide whether to rest tomorrow or Sunday. DD is going to a party tomorrow, so I might try and swim then.

proseccoco Fri 27-Jun-14 22:29:51

I'm in. Body pump class yesterday and run today.

proseccoco Sat 28-Jun-14 19:57:27

3.5k run done. <pass the wine>

OublietteBravo Sun 29-Jun-14 18:05:19

Hi proseccoco - nice to have some company!

I had a rest day yesterday because I was feeling lazy tired, and my kit was in the wash (note to self - need to buy another sports bra).

Today I went swimming- 60 lengths (~2km), so back on track again.

It is going to be a very busy week, so not sure how exercising will fit in (2x sports days, DD's school play x2 evenings, 'new boys' evening for DS, social swim with DD's school and DH & DD both have their birthdays this week)

OublietteBravo Tue 01-Jul-14 21:01:33

Unexpected rest day yesterday (DS's 'new boy' induction evening too longer than expected and involved wine).

Just done 39DS (+ some plank exercises to take me past 30 min).

proseccoco Wed 02-Jul-14 16:24:19

Had a couple of rest days - dh away, but just done a 5k run (had to walk twice, but better than nothing!)

OublietteBravo Fri 04-Jul-14 22:00:57

Not my most successful week. Too much going on I. The evenings to fit exercise in.

Managed to fit in 30 mins of circuits between the gymnastics drop off and the PTA social swim this evening, so hopefully back on track.

proseccoco Fri 04-Jul-14 22:37:17

Nothing yesterday (toddler taming aside); 5k today grin.

OublietteBravo Sat 05-Jul-14 21:45:46

I'm impressed that you can run 5k - I don't think I could! I went back to prancing around in my kitchen doing circuits for 30 min this evening. May be undoing my good work with ice cream though (but only 2 units of alcohol all week, which I'm pleased with).

OublietteBravo Sun 06-Jul-14 21:06:56

Was hoping to make it to the pool, but DC had other ideas. Did manage another 30 mins of circuits though.

It is going to be another busy week - hoping to manage 4 lots of exercise between Mon & Fri.

OublietteBravo Mon 07-Jul-14 20:10:42

Exercise DVD this evening. Definitely easier than it was when I first tried it.

proseccoco Mon 07-Jul-14 20:28:08

5k yesterday, nothing today as dh away!

OublietteBravo Tue 08-Jul-14 20:22:54

Exercise DVD again tonight (as DH was using the kitchen, so no space for circuits). Think tomorrow will be a rest day - full day at work and then giving a 3hr tutorial in the evening, so can't realistically fit any exercise in.

proseccoco Thu 10-Jul-14 06:48:50

Nothing on mon or tues - so busy w work, but went for a 15 min run last night, doing intervals to up my snail speed! Was grim!

OublietteBravo Thu 10-Jul-14 22:16:54

Circuits tonight - really struggling to fit exercise around everything else at the moment. Still need to eat, sleep and be in the office by 8am tomorrow.

OublietteBravo Fri 11-Jul-14 18:33:43

Today is supposed to be the end of my 30 day challenge. I think I've done quite well - I managed 29 lots of 30 mins of exercise. I'll catch up with the missing day over the weekend. I don't think exercising every working day is viable - however, exercising 5 days per week certainly is.

I'm going to try and keep going for another 6 weeks and see how I do.

OublietteBravo Sun 13-Jul-14 19:24:59

Had a rest day yesterday, but back to circuits this evening. Now off to a friends house to sit in the garden and drink wine watch the World Cup final.

OublietteBravo Mon 14-Jul-14 21:42:56

Exercise DVD this evening. Feeling positive about this week (school-based events have slowed down, so should be easier to fit exercise in).

OublietteBravo Wed 16-Jul-14 20:41:31

Day off yesterday (was feeling very tired, so rested). Back to my exercise DVD tonight for a 30 min workout. Feeling very hot and sweaty so off for a shower.

OublietteBravo Thu 17-Jul-14 21:58:54

Really fancied a rest day, but managed to make myself do 30min of prancing around to my exercise DVD. Feeling hot, sweaty and pretty damn impressed with myself!
