100 Miles by Halloween (Run/Walk/Cycle/Hop etc.)(269 Posts)
NB: suspect this should rightly be in a fitness topic but wanted folk to see it - happy to ask MNHQ to change it if need be.
Would anyone like to join me in a fitness challenge to do 100 miles by Halloween, of your chosen sport?
I have just started running and want a challenge that's doable but challenging for me. I can currently do 2 miles on a good day, but to do 100 miles would need to sustain this (and improve) over the next 10 weeks.
So I wondered if there was anyone out there who is improving their fitness and starting out cycling or jogging or hiking (or even swimming!) and wants to hang out here?
I'm guessing this is more appealing for novices like me but heck, anyone's welcome.
I'm not using a pedometer because they're not too accurate for runners apparently, but using websites that enable you to track your route and work out distance travelled. I'll find some links if anyone's interested.
If so: my name is RunFatGirlFun, I'm overweight and unfit and getting old, and today I ran 1.5 miles, and I have 98.5 miles to go!
I'm not running, I'll walk. There are a fair few geocaching routes nearby and some of them are just too long (about 8 miles) to do in one go, so I'm splitting them up into chunks. Good luck with the running, I'm off for a walk along the river.

PS what is 'geocache' and is it fun?!
I know I probably won't sell this very well but... Geocaching is a game, a bit like a nerdy treasure hunt. You go online and search for caches nearby, download the coordinates and go and look for it. It can be any size from a tiny capsule to a huge chest and can be placed anywhere. I've found some made from hollowed out logs, a pine cone attached to a tree, a snail stuck to a magnetic strip on a tree, a fake branch in a tree and a hollowed out bolt stuck to a bridge in plain view.
It's a fun way to introduce exercise to kids too. Also, it takes you to places you'd never think of going, even places that are geographically nearby. It's more fun than I make it sound, honest!

So a 'cache' can be anything you choose to put there/someone else put there?
I've heard people talk about it but had no idea what it was! I am now going to look and see if there is anything on my run route...

Hoping to do 1.5 this afternoon....
Look in the mirror this morning and am starting to see some real changes so that should see me through the infamous 'wall' (which in my case happens after about ten yards).
I've just recovered from a foot injury so have only really got out properly the last couple of days. On Sunday I walked a couple of miles and yesterday afternoon I did about eight around a local beauty spot. The plan today is to walk a four mile loop of local caches which should be fun.

Eek - hope you're on the mend: I live in dread of twisting my ankle or something, so this frankly insane foray into exercise gets stopped just as it begins! How's it been feeling - did you manage your walk? You're going quite the distance and are likely to hit 100 miles long before Halloween!
I've just done 1.5 miles, so that's 5 in total, 95 to go.

I'm up for it....not much chance of a run before term starts but could definitely kick off start doing a walk every day. Count me in!

(although, reading your post again, I see you'll start with walking...in which case going by Nicholas' example you'll do your hundred miles in no time!)

I reckon sporadic is probably the way it'll be, what with life intruding and whatnot - but so nice to have a target and some companions. Or fellow-soldiers, in this case <salutes>
Love Centurions!!! HiRFGR - am just getting back into it .....very, very gradually, after not being able to run since DS was born - and he is now 5! Really enjoying it, but only doing gentle jogs on grass at the moment. Paranoid about injuries (am also unfit, overweight and ancient) but so far so good... Have never kept a distance record (far too humiliating!) but will now have to put something on the fridge door so I can keep a tally!
I'm going to make a suggestion: before you start up with running get a pair of Skechers Shape Ups and do power walking in them. They simulate walking in bare feet on soft sand, therefore making walking harder. Walk up lots of hills, it will make your calves burn. When you do a one mile walk it will feel like you've done much more. You soon get used to them and accept they're helping you get fitter.
Just don't do what I did and not read the instructions. You're supposed to break them in gently, walking in them for about 15 or 20 minutes at first. I used them everywhere and got knackered too quickly. They're ok now though, I swear by them.
Wish I'd known that before I started Nicholas. I went from not running for years to doing a mile my first time - I think it was sheer, utter, bloody-mindedness - just in a pair of Nike Airs. By about 3 weeks in my Achilles tendons were screaming so I went and got fitted for some amazing Brooks running shoes which are light as air.
It's amazing the difference footwear can make (although I suppose it shouldn't be all that surprising when you think about it)
I just wish it would get easier! I am finding I can go further and further - and I really genuinely do enjoy it, especially the aftermath - but it's just such bloody hard work all the way from the first step to 25 minutes later <sigh> I suppose as I get lighter (hopefully) and my legs get stronger it'll get easier.
Good luck with getting back in the saddle Grass! The way I've worked out distance was to randomly plot a nice route on the river path, which happened to turn out to be half a mile. This means I can run back and forth and keep a pretty good eye on how far I've gone (and do intervals if for some reason I'm not running too well, which is what happened today...)

Morning KD, and welcome! Heh, good idea to work out how many days...I am slightly wondering if I've over-estimated my ability to do this, but might as well aim high.
And with any luck 5 weeks of walking before your holiday will shape you up a bit by then, and you might even find yourself running - you never know!
I'm aiming for a 40 length swim this morning and a 1.5 mile run this afternoon. This morning I tried on a dress that hasn't fir in 5 years and it went on like a dream, which has spurred me on somewhat!
I'm in but will stick to walking my knees can't handle the impact. Is counting getting to Uni cheating? I do mean the bit I walk obviously.
Room for a not very little one? This sounds manageable I really need to loose some weight. I can't pretend it was baby weight I was fat before she arrived

Can I add in a walk up Scarfell Pike just before you started the thread? I've just got over a foot injury too so it was quite an achievement (and thankfully only knackered my legs, not my foot again).

100 miles by halloween is more than doable, I'm aiming for at least 150 per month, which is only about 5 a day.

OK, for Oscar and anyone interested: here is the link to a run/walk/cycle route planner thingy. It's very easy: you just enter the postcode or name of your town, and use the cursor to click each stage of your route. I actually don't think this is the one I was using - I can't seem to find it. But there are loads.
At the moment I'm just counting my runs, and not walking or swimming. But that would mean running 10 miles a week, which given the most I can run in one go at the moment is 2 miles (and then only on a good day!) is quite a big ask. I'll see how I go and might
cheat help by counting in my walks as well...though obviously I'd rather not.
As for how to do this: should we all just post our progress as and when we want to? For example, my status today would be:

We could even do a weekly round-up but I'm probably just getting ridiculously School Prefect about it
Today was just over two miles, so the total since Monday is about 11 miles. My legs definitely feel it after the enfoced lay off, which is a good thing.
Making place as at work but definitely up for that. Wantto start swimming again but will walk most of it, health can't hack cycling or running
Oooh can I join. Ive signed up for a 10k in Oct so def need to clock up some miles. Am just getting back into running again after injuring my shin 2 weeks ago and have been alternating between bike, swimming and running.
Oscar, I use run keeper which you can download onto your phone. It records walking, running, cycling and is brilliant.

Walking and swimming is great, Confused - and sorry about your health - Everyone I know in healthcare and fitness says that walking and swimming are the best forms of exercise because it's practically impossible to do yourself a mischief, but it still works your body well - good luck with it!

Well - I just had a RUBBISH run and only did a mile
I find it really odd that on one day I can feel amazing and do really well, then the next only do half that. I'm such a bleeding novice that I just don't really know how our bodies work. Is that normal?? I did do a fairly robust 30 minute swim this morning and my period's starting, so maybe that's it...

I use the Nike running app (it doesn't mind that I walk) - it's free and maps your route using GPS as well as using your phone as a pedometer.
Mind you, having Paula Radcliffe congratulating me on my great run, when I've strolled 2 miles, is a bit funny!
I've 126 miles on it (over about 4 months - not very intensive exercise) so I'll try to add another 100 by Halloween (my birthday is the 30th so hopefully I'll have lost a few lbs by then too)

I am a bit of a runner and am doing the Great North Run in <<eek>> just over 3 weeks time but training has been sporadic and I know I will need a challenge after the race (once I can feel my legs again )

We are going out to a museum this afternoon and inspired by this thread I'm going to walk there and back - a mile each way.
Not much in comparison to some (well, most) of you but better than nothing.
Can I join? I'm trying to start running again by just getting out and doing it. I'm doing a combination of walking and running. At the moment I'm covering 6km per day (mostly walking) but aiming for more as my running distance increases.
THis is a great idea and hopefully will keep me focused!

Don't be Oscar I am very unfit! I get my miles through walking and I'm only doing that as I have a Fitbit and I really hate to lose
I know it's not a competition but I did used to be quite fit so I think I've already got a bit of a complex!
Museum walks done. Included quite a few hills, and pushing a buggy with 18 month old, and 3.5 year old on buggy board. So I do feel like I've had a work out.
I already had 1 mile from yesterday. 1 mile this morning plus my two I've just done:

Hi all. Its all the small walks etc that seem to add up dont they? Ive joined the gym this morning. As Ive been plagued with injury since i started running again i thought id see if going to the gym will help. Am having my induction tomorrow evening.
Am heading out for a 1.5 mile run when dh finally gets home from work. Will check in later.

3.1 miles today. So that's 14.1 miles so far this week. After the enforced layoff my poor legs feel it and probably will for a couple of weeks. Part of the pain is the Shape-Ups, they make walking more effort, so hopefully walking in my usual shoes will be easier. I hope. More importantly, I found 6 out of 7 caches today, and tomorrow should see me over the 300 found barrier. The walk I have planned for that is about 3.5 miles. Phew.

I'm going to be having a weekend of shameful indulgence as we're away for a friend's wedding, and I won't be able to run (we'll be walking as much as we can, but I'm determined to do this just counting my runs - until now at least, reckon I'll change my mind in about 3 weeks
If anyone needs any inspiring: about 2 months ago I decided to really take my health in hand, without going on a diet (they don't work yo) or weighing myself (it makes me crazy). So all I've done is eat well, and swim or run every day. And in 2 months, almost without trying, I'm small enough (no idea how much weight I've lost) for clothes that have been hanging reproachfully on the hanger unworn for years to be fitting jolly nicely thankyou. So every little step and every length of the pool all adds up!

Well done on your mileage today. That is great, you're walking not going by train. This is doable. Just a couple of miles a day is what'll do it.

I'd like to get up to running for an hour on my day off -thurs - and half an hour one day in the weekend. At current pace that will get me to approx 8-9 miles a week, but I really want to get quicker!
I'll be starting tomorrow with a fairly gentle half hour/3 mile jobbie. It's been a while!

OP thanks for starting this thread, you have inspired me! I am 4 stone overweight and I can really feel it when I walk. I want to get my weight down and feel better. I can't get out of the house every day so I thought I might (and this will sound so mad-ridiculous!) measure the distance from one end of my home to the other and try to fit in some walks to and fro, to and fro, each day when I have to stay indoors. I know it sounds silly, but this is the only way I could reach the target I think.

Missed Parkrun today, so went out around the fields on my normal route. Just managed a rather wheezy 5k (must remember antihistamines next time). So, 94 miles left to go.
Just did 2.5 miles on treadmill while d2 was having swimming lesson. Was hard! That's what 4 weeks off does for you..
Will try and come again for longer 1 morning in the week. Prob thurs. in the meantime i will get walking more.
Ok so I've downloaded endomondo. DD1 stared school last week and the school run is a 3.6km round trip, I can do. That twice on a Monday and twice on a Friday. The other days I work so will try to get walking on my lunch.
8 weeks today till my best friends wedding. My dress fits snugly but it's knee length so really want to tone my legs up a bit. Weighed myself last night and I was 15st6lbs I'm 5'8" and a size 16. It is my anniversary in 7 weeks and I was 14st3lbs last year when we got married! I wished I'd weighed myself sooner so I could have made a real effort to get down to that weight!!

Have you tried myfitnesspal? Its just a food and exercise diary really, but its great for seeing where those calories go every day. A 2lb a week weight loss is totally realistic, so you could shift that stone before your anniversary

I do have it, I just need to make good use of it, I start for a couple of days then stop again!
I was out at the park with dds today from 1pm to 4pm but we walked a lot, I left my phone in the car but I reckon we covered 1.5-2 miles. I'm not counting it as its not accurate but just shows how easy it is!
I only did 4.8 miles yesterday because we went out early to the pub but I did 8.3 today so I have 70.2 miles to go.
Cycled 4.5 and walked 2 this morning, in the pouring rain, getting FTF geocaches! It was great actually, and now I'm in a hot bath and looking forward to doing not much else today

Joining a bit late, but I think that this is just the challenge for me.
I started yesterday, walking down to our local canal and then around the local park. I even stopped at one of those outside exercise gym things and worked my upper body
only did 3 minutes because I felt a bit silly before looping back to may house.

Morning all. 5 miles at gym. Combo of cycling, running and rowing. 88 miles to go!!
Only 1.8 yesterday, didn't fancy getting drenched, and 4 miles dead today on an FTF hunt (failed by an hour), so, erm, <counts on fingers> 76.8 left to do.
I'm revising my initial target. I'm going to try for 100 miles a month till I get some fitness and condition back in my legs, they feel terrible for having no exercise after breaking a toe.
I got the endomodo app on my phone and have used it today.
It's giving me distances in km (not sure if its always that way or if its because the app has worked out I'm in Switzerland).
So, I managed 5k this morning and 2k this afternoon.
According to google that's just over 4 miles so I'll round it down (with a view to rounding up another time).
So I am 11 miles down, 89 to go
I'm excited to be down to 80-something.

To change from Km to miles, press the icon on top left of Endomondo screen, go into
Settings - profile - units - US/English
2.9 miles this morning and 5.8 on Friday for the school run. Hopefully another 2.9 this afternoon.
I didn't count my weekend miles. But I'll be pleased with the 11.6 a week for the school run.
Another 5k, so 91 miles left for me. Need to pick up the pace a bit and do some longer runs!
Late starter but I need to get back into a decent routine now the holidays are almost over.
I am going to count dog walks only, my dog is looking sad and a bit porky after the smallish walks she's had to manage on. And the vet was so pleased she had managed to drop a kilo at her last health check.
Right I am now asking my daughter to hide my ipad for at least two hours so I can get stuff done.

Hello everyone, hello! Hello new Centurions!
Well, I'm back home from a weekend away at a wonderful wedding. Alas, I overdid it hugely on both the food and drink front, and made myself very, very unwell indeed. I am now In Recovery <sigh> (and in disgrace) and hope to be back running tomorrow.
I have walked around 3 miles today - but I'm really keen to keep to my aim to only count my running miles. It's not a competition so if it means I only manage 60-70 miles by Halloween it doesn't matter one bit: I can change my target to Christmas.
Right, off to read the thread news & see how everyone's getting on!
Oh my goodness, everyone's doing so brilliantly! It's so nice that everyone has their own definition of what's an achievement for them, if you see what I mean. Doing a good long walk when you're pushing a pram and carrying a baby and haven't had time to exercise in years is just as much of an achievement as going for a 3 mile run when the most you can usually do is 2.
By the way I know I sound agonisingly enthusiastic and Pollyannish on this thread and I don't even apologise - if I'd had an enthusiastic PE teacher instead of a bully I might never have ended up obese and unfit, so there.
DrSeuss good luck with your 'dress target'! Running'll be great. It's only taken me about 2 months for things that haven't fit me for about 5 years to re-enter my wardrobe. It's like going shopping without having to spend ££...

I am vair unfit at the moment and have put on quite a bit of weight over the last year but I am just in the process of getting back into regular running again. 100 miles in time for Halloween is a great target to keep me motivated.
I have a 2 mile circuit that takes me about 20 mins to complete but I would like to increase the distance as I get fitter. So I am aiming to start with running 2 miles 5 times a week and take it from there I will be starting tomorrow so 100 miles to go for me!
First day of our holiday near Clacton today and its GORGEOUS weather! Just walked from caravan along seafront nearly to Clacton, where we stopped for fish & chips and beer on the beach.

I had to revise my target downward because breaking a toe left me largely inactive and any walk over about ten minutes is knackering atm. I'm aiming to increase stamina so I can easily do an hour non stop, which at the speed I walk is just over four miles. When I can do that every day I'll raise my target again, and continue to try to increase stamina till I can do ten miles at a go. That might take a few months.
OP, don't worry about a blow out, we all deserve one sometimes. You've started something good.

Thanks for concern about distance - I have been increasing the mileage gradually, it just hasn't shown up here yet! I'm up to 6-7 mile runs, just not the 9-10 milers I should be doing. As I only have 3 weeks I am concentrating on speed work, with a few longer runs thrown in, and hoping the distance is in my legs on the day - bloody-mindedness should get me through plus the knowledge that I have run that distance once before (but only once!)

I did a half marathon about five years ago. Not run at all in four years.
I did manage to run the full twelve point whatever miles about a fortnight before the event. But I agree it's mental attitude which will get you over the line. I almost have up at the twelve mile mark (yes really!!) but luckily a wonderful man who just happened to be running beside me made me run the rest.

I did Silverstone Half Marathon last year so I know I can get round, just haven't had the best training this time.

Finally prized my 13 year old daughter away from the computer and indulged in a bit of mother daughter bonding on a 4 mile walk which included a trip to buy cheese in ASDA followed by a stroll by our local river.

Hi everyone - just swinging by to say that I've not abandoned my target but I won't be around for a bit. I'm travelling around a little partly because my dear Granny is gravely ill so we are getting to see her, and partly because I then have to be away from home for meetings etc. I'm keeping up swimming but finding it hard to fit running in - hopefully by this weekend things will have settled down a bit and I can tick off those miles.

Good morning! I'm sorry for my long absence - and thanks for your good wishes.
My gran is very ill, and I doubt will last another week: it's been very sad and I might be having to dash down to see her/the family again. In a way we are hoping for a swift release - she is 94, and so we all knew the time would come soon.
ANYWAY after all my to-ing and fro-ing I went for my first run in 2 weeks (DISCLAIMER I have been doing lots of walking and swimming) this morning and did 2 miles! Am really REALLY chuffed and rather surprised. DH came with me and confirmed my suspicion that that was the easiest run I've ever done in terms of being able to talk, not getting too knackered too early etc. How that can be the case when I'm so out of practice I've no idea but hurrah anyway.
SO my stats are a bit pathetic but:

BTW if anyone reading thinks I'm really shamefully lazy can I just say: I do walk everywhere and swim 30-40 lengths 4-5 times a week, but I've decided it suits my own fitness target best if I only count my actual runs. I'm not anything like the couch potato it looks from my stats
Don't fret about your stats OP, the fact you were able to hold a conversation while running shows that your fitness levels are increasing, probably due to the swimming. My own levels are still low, but are improving slowly, so I'm not particularly concerned as long the improvement continues. I actually walked to and from the supermarket today, a journey of approx 1.2 miles each way, and I think I shall carry that on unless I have to put petrol in the car.
I hope your Gran is at least comfortable as she reaches the end. Hugs to you and your family.

kelda I have an iPhone app called endomodo which runs o GPS and tells me how far I've walked. I think there are also sites online where you can plot your route and it tells you how long you've travelled.
I really like the app. The only thing is remembering to switch it on (or off if I get on public transport!). And it does eat my iPhone battery.
I managed 7.5 miles today (v proud of myself!).

I have to admit though, I have a cold which is turning into a cough and I feel exhausted. I just want to catch the bus.
I have a Garmin Etrex which records distance travelled. I reset the trip every day and record what I've walked. Since the last time I logged on (pc problem-it's fixed now, thank fuck) I've walked 34.7 miles, including an unbroken 1 and 3/4 hour walk for 6.2 miles, so I have 9.8 to go for the hundred. I still get tired on hills, so I'm working on that.

I know how you feel Scottish. My dh offered me a lift one evening this week but I insisted on walking, and got drenched in the rain, despite my raincoat.

My lovely Gran passed away last week and I was then away in rainy Wales for a few days, so I feel as if I've had hardly any chance to do any exercise BUT I know that if I really wanted to, I would.
Got back in the saddle (well, my running shoes) yesterday and did 2 miles, taking me to a paffetic 10 miles down and 90 to go.
I was HORRIFIED my hard yesterday's run was but am assured by DH that my fitness will recover quickly and I'm not quite back to square one!
I'll be travelling around for family/the funeral next week but need to make sure I don't keep making excuses for myself.

Scottish I'm sure you're right. I was feeling a bit gloomy today but have been for a run and feel much brighter.
Feeling the colder air a bit today in my breathing (asthmatic) which slowed me a bit, but DH was with me helpfully pointing out that Seb Coe is asthmatic and the fitter I am the less likely I am to succumb to a chest infection this winter!
Only did 1.5 miles but with DH pace-setting which is great as I really pelted home the last 0.5 miles <wheeze>

Hope your knees are mending - one of the reasons I started running was that my knee kept inexplicably giving way, and instead of seeing the GP as my poor DH kept insisting I decided I'd see if I could run it better - I'm sure that's a potentially dangerous route but it seems to have worked!

Scottish - I read The Testament of Mary today. I don't know how they have the gall to call it a novel - it's barely more than a short story! - but it's very compelling and exquisitely written, although I had a problem with Toibin writing very consciously 'beautiful' prose to be the voice of a probably virtually illiterate country woman! Def. worth a read. I'll do Harvest next - it's supposed to be his best since Being Dead - and I'm really looking forward to The Luminaries.

I wish I'd done my exercise in my knickers at home today! I cycled to a nearby park, met some friends and went for a 3.5mi walk (with geocaches). Half way round it started raining. And of course I had to cycle home again. I am drenched!! Now in a hot bath with coffee and cheese + crackers before braving the rain again for the school run. And I notice that there's water running down the wall again - from a flashing on the roof that needs sorting out. Aaargh.

Finally back on after Great North Run a week ago (can't believe that this time last week I was wandering around at the start and was SO nervous )
Run was amazing - fantastic support along the route despite the cold, windy, damp weather, yelling 'Oggy, Oggy, Oggy' through all the tunnels, hail over the Tyne Bridge , 56,000 other runners often with heart-wrenching reasons for running, the Red Arrows flying over just as I turned onto the seafront at South Shields and I took 2 mins off my previous time. Even getting SOAKED after finish and the 90 min wait for the Metro couldn't take the shine off a fabulous day. Desperate to sign up for next year
Haven't run since but did an Aquafit class on Friday and have a gym induction tomorrow. DH is away until Tuesday night so no early morning runs until at least mid-week.

We have had lovely weather which has encouraged me to walk lots. But I am coming down with a cold which I will no doubt use as an excuse to be lazy.
I did 4 miles yesterday and 6.5 today. So I think that's me pretty much reached target. 99.5 miles. I am conscious that none of it is anything other than walking. I really should take some of the motivation I have had to walk and make the effort to start running again.
Working away at the weekend and no opportunity for exercise (I was too busy stuffing my face with free food!!) Managed a walk today in the country - lovely and sunny with the trees looking very autumnal and pretty. So glad to live here and not in a concrete city

Woo! I'm up to 107mi!! I think I will have done 100 in the month by the end of Sept. Has made a huge difference to cycle to school and back every day, and DS2 has really enjoyed it as well. I am a lot fitter now than I was 6 weeks ago - can get over the railway bridge in 4th gear now (instead of 1st ). Thanks for the incentive RunGirl!! Think I might go for another 100 in October.

I took dd1 into town today and judging by my aching legs, I thought we had done at least four miles. But no, only 2.4 according to google maps!
Managed to rack up 10k this week with the dog and actually got to go for a run today for the first time in 2 weeks. It was rubbish, obviously but that's another 15 miles off the total. Now I have 61 miles to go.
I think we should all convert the distances into kilometres!
Well done for running. I can't run at all.
I do running in km and driving in miles. I didn't run the whole way on my run, I had to stop and walk a couple of times. I've only had the chance to run about 3 times this month so my fitness level has really slipped.
Haven't walked today but roller bladed for an hour this morning. I wonder how far I skated?

Finally out for my first run yesterday since GNR 2 weeks ago. I knew I would need something to get me out again - this thread and a very stressful letting situation got me going.
RunFatGirl - absolutely, definitely sign up to do GNR next year, I can't rave about it enough. Think I am still on a bit of a high and running again just brought back lots of memories

Well, 3 miles to report, taking me to 74.5 go Safe to say I shan't be troubling the leaderboard any time soon.
Could I just say though - beware to anyone doing what I did, as I've been quite unwell in the last week with anaemia - faint, dizzy, sick, headachy, vague etc.
I basically went on a vegan crash diet and went from being a couch potato to running 3-4 times a week and swimming long distances almost every day. Now you'd think it'd be obvious that this might bring problems, but muggins here failed to cotton on
I am now taking a big fat dose of iron every morning and making sure I eat eggs and fish, and feeling rather better, although my runs are still much harder work than this time last month. So be warned, chaps! Moderation in all things!
Oh my goshness and CONGRATS to Kelda for finishing - now you need to do another 100 miles my Christmas

I'm not exactly feeling fitter because my GP thinks I have sciatica. Fortunately walking is ok, but it's very painful climbing the stairs and even at nighttime. When the doctor asked me how much exercise I did, I told her I walk about 100 miles/ month

kelda - rubbish about sciatica but at being able to tell GP how much you exercise, hope she was impressed.
Not quite the same but when I went for a gym induction recently I was able to answer a similar question posed by the puffed up gym instructor with 'I've just done my second half-marathon' Stopped treating me like a geriatric dodderer after that

I don't know what's happened to me - I have lost my running mojo My swimming mojo is intact, but ... I just can't run I don't know who that superstar was who ran 5k just for the hell of it last month, but it sure as hell wasn't me.
I think I've basically lost confidence. I know I'm strong and fit enough to do 2 miles at the absolute least, but just can't. I've started feeling really self-conscious which is ridiculous as I'm so much smaller than when I started. But for instance today I got sarcastically wolf-whistled at by some twat coming out of an office, and then when a gang of French teenagers were blocking a path on the river and I sort of asked them to move over they all kind of smirked and tittered. and every now and then people go, "ooooh, well DONE, you're doing EVER SO WELL", like I'm a 90 year old amputee, not a fucking size 18 33 year old with both legs fully present.
ANYWAY. I just need to get my confidence back then I'll be OK. DH is going to come with me tomorrow and he's good for a boost.

RunFatGirlRun they are all twats. You are doing brilliantly. It takes guts to get out and run. I can walk fine, but I will find every excuse under the sun not to go out running because it makes me feel self concious.
It's great you are swimming. I took the children swimming today, which meant I didn't actually swim at all
I agree, twats. You are the one doing the exercise, making yourself healthier, making yourself feel better, they are not.
I haven't had much in the way of negative comments whilst running but then I tend to run early in the morning and in the countryside if I can so not much opportunity. I do get some supportive comments and I will say something encouraging if I walk past someone running, especially if they aren't the lean, mean running type (who scare me a bit)
However I am 5'10" and tend to make eye contact with, and smile at, everyone I encounter - possibly in an attempt to deflect anything negative before they even think about it
Out again this morning, possibly the last warm morning run before the cool, crisp autumn mornings start.

kelda - the gym is part of the local council sports complex that includes a fab new 50m swimming pool and more exercise classes than you can throw a stick at. Actually took me ages to join but I realised that I enjoy this running lark so much that I want to get better and I don't want rubbish cold, wet, snowy, icy weather to stop me. Even the thought of running on a treadmill, which I HATE, is better than not running. Tis a bit scary
Thanks for being so encouraging, folks. TWATS indeed, and I didn't let it stop me. Went out with DH and did a quite fast 1.5 miles with a sprint at the end <air punch>
DH thinks that part of the problem is that I'm unconsciously running a lot faster without realising, which is why I can't seem to go as far. . . tomorrow I'm going to have a shot at going inchingly slowly and seeing if I can do a good 2 miles again.
So that's me with 72 miles to go
Feetheart I know what you mean about being scared of the lean mean sorts: there's this couple I seem to run past very frequently, 55 if they're a day, lean as whippets and brown as nuts, sporting hundreds of pounds worth of running paraphernalia! I'm sure they're lovely but I'm so awestruck by them I keep a wide berth!

First proper run on a treadmill as weather was horrible. It was interesting in some ways - I can see me getting competitive with the distance/time display but I much prefer running in the fresh air.

I've been having physio for my leg - it's not sciatica exactly but it is some sort of spine problem that is causing pain down one side. Wlaking is fine but climbing stairs is very painful.

Good morning everyone!!! Oh God, I can't believe I haven't been posting. I've been running, just not posting. What a dufus.
So I just wanted to round the thread off (not that we won't all keep running!) by saying firstly massive THANKS to everyone for getting stuck in - I hope we all feel fitter, happier, healthier etc.!
I didn't make my 100 miles target by a long bleeding shot BUT - I began my attempt to get healthy and strong in early July, and in 5 months I have gone from running nowhere to running 3 miles and swimming frequently. I have better skin, my incipient IBS has calmed down, and although I don't weigh myself (I get real anxiety problems around that so I avoid it where I can) I would judge I've lost around 1.5 stone, and am able to wear clothes that haven't fit me for 5-6 years. I have never felt so fit and happy and healthy, and I'm so grateful to everyone for their support.
My running journey isn't over - I'm aiming to do a half marathon next year for Macmillan, in memory of my lovely Granny.
I'll be name-changing now as this name was for a specific period and ... well: I don't feel fat anymore!

There's been some amazing achievements on this thread. And I just can't believe how different I feel. And it's all a journey etc. etc. and I'm only halfway there - I might pop onto the thread periodically and report on progress towards a half marathon (and shamelessly post a link to the sponsorship page )

I didn't make it to 100 this time as the knee twinge made me rest. Also missed our
badly publicised inaugural local half marathon as I had another commitment - would have been a very different experience to GNR but at least I could have got home easily.
Really need to get back out now but it keeps raining (and although I love a cold run I can't stand cold and wet). However I have promised DS(8) that I will do the local Santa Run 5k with him and a Boxing Day 5k event as well. Just need to find a few longer races to spur me on again.

Not really, Boxing Day is a bit of a non-day most years. Its a very local run and does lots of different kids races.
What I really liked was that they don't award prizes 'for running fast' but do award one for the best excuse posted before the event as to why you aren't going to run fast
