I´m doing one in May and was wondering if anyone else had been brave (stupid) enough to try one...?

Worried about the electric shocks and 12 miles...need to work on my pull ups and increase my running distance by a few miles!

kaumana Sun 27-Jan-13 11:36:23

I've just been talking to a friend re doing one in August in Edinburgh.

The electric shock challenge seems interesting to say the least! and I'll have to do some upper body strength training too but am very tempted as it looks like a hoot grin

Needabitofsunshine Sun 27-Jan-13 19:25:00

All signed up for Kettering in May! Husband is doing it too and a few friends, so hoping it will be a wet, cold, sore, muddy way!

I'm doing it in may too! I'm so nervous!

I did South major series in October last year, doing my second one in march... I'm doing strength training for my upper body now grin

Needabitofsunshine Tue 29-Jan-13 15:40:55

Sure, you´ll be an expert then!

I'm terrified of the electric shocks..... Why would we do this to ourselves?!

kaumana Tue 29-Jan-13 17:19:52

I got a new gym programme last night done with the Tough Mudder in mind. Lots of upper body work, pull ups and some thing that looks like a log that you shift from shoulder to shoulder. I am very sore today..

TheFallenNinja Wed 06-Feb-13 21:20:00

I did the may one last year. It was awesome. I'm doing the may one this year also. It will be awesome. smile

Needabitofsunshine Fri 15-Feb-13 16:37:35

Well, pleased to report that I can run 10 miles, in fact once I got into my groove I could even have carried on!?! Have always known my running demons have been mental not physical... Did just over 8 miles this week too and it felt good, so can I dare hope that I´ve finally found my running mojo?

Any tips FallenNinja? What training do you think helped you most? I´m quite looking forward to it (in a slightly scared sort of way...), should be a right laugh!

TheFallenNinja Tue 19-Feb-13 11:47:57

I didn't do much different than lots and lots of miles to prepare really, some press ups / crunches to give me a chance on the couple of obstacles that needed upper body strength.

Apart form that it is a brilliant day out.

Wear your headband with pride smile

shanghaismog Mon 25-Feb-13 20:48:49

Quick question about the course? Is it hilly? It´s really flat here (as in zero hills) so am hoping it´s not!

shanghaismog Mon 25-Feb-13 20:50:14

oops, it´s me needabitofsunshine...

Hello hello....just wondering what with 6 weeks to go....what are you all doing to prepare? This is my first one and I'm nervous. I can't do pull ups no matter hard I try and I know you need to do those monkey bar things.....

Also I think there are hills. Website alludes to it anyway

TheFallenNinja Sat 23-Mar-13 23:27:59

Not majorly hilly they found a few inclines last year but overall it was pretty even.

I've got last years course map if anyones interested

CooEeeEldridge Sat 23-Mar-13 23:40:31

Argh! It's late, I'll come back to this tomorrow. Haven't done one but doing dirty rat race at burghley in may- maybe we can motivate each other?? I'll be back tomorrow!!!

TheFallenNinja Sat 23-Mar-13 23:48:28

Clutching, dont worry too much about full pull ups, try just hanging, get some strength into your hands.

CooEeeEldridge Sun 24-Mar-13 16:03:51

Hi clutching! Are you doing the same one as the op?? I'm doing the dirty rat race half mucker. Have you done any other events? I haven't!

My training generally contains me panicking lots! I'm sort of following this training plan . I do a lot of gym classes anyway but I'm trying to do cx worx, pump and hit classes whenever I can as well as attack / combat / boot camp. I always do at least a double class so I know I can 'go' for 2+ hours. My big concern is that I'm behind on the running, the most I've done recently is 10 miles at the mo, but im confident I can do more. I also can't do pull ups! I think I'll manage a few monkey bars (I think if we come off its swimming!), and I'm off to the park next weekend to embarrass myself! I'm also shitting it on ropes, I simply CANNOT climb one, I'm not sure if this is generally in them or not though??

Ninja - had you done other running events? I've never done anything before and not sure if am a bit naive about it all??

TheFallenNinja Sun 24-Mar-13 21:42:11

I've Donna few similar things (I was in the Army for 6 years) and whist this is tough, it's also great fun. It's more about the personal challenge really. I went with a mate last year who had never ran and he got round no problem. We worked as a team and had a good laugh. You'll be fine.

CooEeeEldridge Mon 25-Mar-13 10:49:31

Thank you for replying Ninja. I think I'll really enjoy it, what's frightened me is people at the gym recoiling in horror at me saying I'm doing it!

TheFallenNinja Mon 25-Mar-13 12:21:33

Are you in with a team?

CooEeeEldridge Mon 25-Mar-13 12:53:30

Hopefully boyfriend is doing it too, so we should be able to motivate / help each other. Although we are horribly competitive normally, but I think the size of the challenge will make us stick together!

Hello ninja and cooee. I'm in a team called muddlers union for crazies! Which I think you can look up on the website?

You are doing more than I am, been a bit under the weather so haven't got out much recently to run. I've done 2 Major series so I'm hopeful they will help me!

Thanks for the "hanging" tip Ninja that is very helpful.

Yep think me and the OP must be on the same one, 4th may. 5 weeks. Shitting myself quite frankly I need to up my running!

shanghaismog Mon 01-Apr-13 18:33:33

Not long now!!! I've been running quite a bit over the last couple of weeks. Will be tough but can do 16km without any major problems. Just feel like an old woman in need if a hip replacement for the next 2 days... Can't wait to go back to my nice easy 8-10kms! Glad to hear it's pretty flat, as I've been on hills during holiday this week and they've been really tough!

Our team is dropping like flies, so may well end up being just myself and DH. In a twisted way I'm quite excited about it, we're just in it for a bit of a challenge. Definitely scared about the electric shock nonsense!

Wonder what the weather will be like? What are you guys planning to wear? I reckon 3/4 running tights (to cover knees), vest too if warm ANC long sleeve if not. Would rather cover elbows but I run hot during exercise...although the arctic enema should put paid to that!

Anyone hanging around for the after party? We're not sure yet...might be fun to have a beer and compare stories?

I'm so not prepared for this..... I haven't done any big runs for so long I haven't got the childcare! Oh we'll my teams mates can just push me along they are all training with 13 mile runs at the moment!!

I'm probably wearing full length running tights and my usual white vest. Not concerned about elbows, mine took a huge bashing in the Major Series the other week so they are hard now! I'm getting a head band of some sort as my hair always flicks in my face.

Not sure I'm staying for the party....I've got one night of babysitting from my mum and its a 2.5 hour drive away so don't know yet whether to go up early on the day or have a lay in in a hotel on the morning....hmmmm.

Swallowedbyasnake Wed 03-Apr-13 21:19:52

I did one last year, it was amazing! Afterwards you feel like you can do anything and looking back especially at bits like artic enema I find it hard to believe I did do it! My training mainly involved running and I think I did too much of this and not enough strength. It's not like a half marathon there are lots of stops while you wait to get on the obstacles and bits where the mud is so thick that it is physically impossible to run. Especially good to do it in costume!

Swallowedbyasnake Wed 03-Apr-13 21:22:21

I forgot to mention the very fit guys in tight tops and shorts who are happy to give you a punt up the walls!

Well in that case I'm very excited ha ha

Oh good I've been doing some extra strength stuff

McPie Sat 06-Apr-13 22:46:54

Im paid up for the one in August, lucky for me its just down the road.
I am scared I wont manage to complete the course but have a great team of about 20 ladies who have been gathered from local leisure centres so we are all in the same boat.
I have been doing as many classes as I can as part of my training and we meet up every so often to do some form of group training, spin and aqua aerobics so far and kettlercise has been suggested for the next one as one of the leading forces is trained in such classes, very lucky lady to have on board.
I pulled my calf muscle last week so have been doing nothing, well other than kettlercise and metafit on thursday which has left me aching after doing nothing for the week before. I am on low impact for now with no running involved and will be back to my full class programme monday morning once the darlings have been deposited in school.

shanghaismog Thu 11-Apr-13 15:57:36

Hope the calf sorts itself out Mcpie, sounds like you've got a fun team! Just booked a hotel for the night before (as we're coming from overseas) and it's made it feel properly real... Currently sporting a massive blister after my last 10 miler. Not good. Just got myself a pair of cheap trail running shoes as my usual trainers have absolutely no grip. Looking forward to testing them out smile

mum47 Thu 11-Apr-13 15:59:33

My sister is doing one this year. I have seen pictures and footage of it. You are all bloody mental (respect emotion)

TheFallenNinja Sat 27-Apr-13 17:30:07

Just one more week to go smilesmilesmile

ItsYoniYappy Sat 27-Apr-13 17:35:08

My friend is doing the one in August, I'm going to watch!

Less than one week now! Did 8 miles cross country yesterday and really tempted by some trail shoes shanghaismog as my trainers are exceptionally slidey in mud!
I've also got a pair of weightlifting fingerless gloves for wall gripage.

I'm in a hotel Friday night too in Wellingborough with the team. Actually really excited about it now.

ItsYoniYappy Sun 28-Apr-13 17:40:35

McPie and Kaumana I hope you have your Mn scarfs ready and I will cheer you on too.

shanghaismog Mon 29-Apr-13 13:04:42

I know, so close now! Got my death waiver signed... Quite scared...

I LOVE my trail shoes. They´re not too hardcore, so can still run on roads a bit as well. These ones

We start early on Sat - 8.40am. Thank goodness as otherwise would be a nervous wreck all day!

Will check those trail shoes out running at 9.40!

See you at the finish line. Illness in a vest or t shirt that says "mudders union for crazies" on it! I'd give you a physical description but the mud will be caked on grin

Did you see someone died doing it in the US last week?!?

Excuse horrific iPhone typing!

CooEeeEldridge Mon 29-Apr-13 16:57:03

Good luck guys! Do let us know how you get on, I've got the rat race a week on Sat, I swung between excitement and trepidation!

shanghaismog Tue 30-Apr-13 06:20:21

I know, a bit mental... On the walk the plank obstacle, which is one I fear anyway. Gulp... Life insurance is up to date smile

shufflebum Tue 30-Apr-13 06:44:50

Oooh hope you don't mind me jumping in, are any if you doing the Kettering one? Are you/ DH bringing children to watch? Not sure what to do they are 19 months and 4 years and it's supposed to rain!

shufflebum Tue 30-Apr-13 20:03:59

No I'm leaving dd with DP for day/night. Yes I'm at Kettering Saturday. Are you doing it shufflebum or is your Dh ?

shufflebum Wed 01-May-13 04:14:36

DH is doing it, I'm not that mad!

CooEeeEldridge Fri 03-May-13 14:50:36

Good luck all!! Looks like youve got the weather for it, come back and let us know how you've got on!

Bricking itshock

CooEeeEldridge Fri 03-May-13 23:15:50

You'll be ace clutching! Enjoy it, that is the main thing! if all else fails push someone off something

kaumana Sat 04-May-13 12:49:50

All the best for today. Can't wait to hear how it went.

I'm traumatised!! It was fun wink. Some of those obstacles werea mental challenge over a physical. I've got some cracking bruises and scrapes

McPie Sat 04-May-13 21:01:05

Well done on completing it, I saw some pics on facebook earlier and it looked amazing.
Its the climbing that frightens me, gonna have to up my game with the boxing and weights I think! Less than 4 months to go now for me smile

kaumana Sat 04-May-13 21:38:53

clutching You're alive!! I too have seen the pics from today on FB, looked amazing.

itsyoni mcpie and myself may have to get "the scarf" and tie it round our heads warrior like.

CooEeeEldridge Sat 04-May-13 23:15:02

Well done clutching!!!! Tell us all about it! You did it AND posted all in one day! Bruises ago go then? What did you wear on the legs? Had hoped for shorts for rat race but not sure if sensible as so done who hates tights!!

Big mistake to wear shorts I got major thigh chaffing! It was fun. The obstacles were tough. Jumping off the big platform in to water? Nearly shat myself. Electric shocks feel like you are bring punched with a sharp ring on. Arctic enema? Jeepers! Whacked all the breath from my body and lost control of my limbs! People are really helpful though and helped push/pull me up when stuck.

CooEeeEldridge Sun 05-May-13 17:31:08

How you feeling today clutching?? So from Your comments above, wore the shorts I planned to wear on Sat and they chaffed!! Never thought about that so thanks for saving me from that thanks!

shanghaismog Sun 05-May-13 19:29:45

Fantastic!!!! Totally mental challenge rather than physical! Not a big fan of being submerged in water, so loads of the obstacles were major fear factor... Battered with some pretty spectacular bruises. Lots if fun though and we were more than prepared fitness wise. Electric eel was by far the worst, followed by arctic enema!

TheFallenNinja Tue 07-May-13 06:55:22

It was awesome. Way better than last year. smilesmilesmilesmile Loved it.

kaumana Tue 07-May-13 20:57:30

Thanks guys for posting how you got on, I'm really looking forward to the Edinburgh one.

Though not so much the artic enema or anything involving height and jumping!

Clutching What type of shorts did you wear? I had planned to wear my Nike dry fit ones.

CooEeeEldridge Thu 09-May-13 13:25:17

kaumana they are the Nike dry fit ones. However, I wore them for 2 runs since and no chaffing?! I think I'm going to wear them, but Vaseline up.. I'll let you know how I get on!!

shanghaismog Thu 09-May-13 20:32:01

I wore 3/4 length dri fit capris and thought they were fab. Totally not waterlogged at all and a little bit of knee protection. Mind you I still have some amazingly spectacular bruises! Don't plan to wear anything short sleeved or legged for at least a week afterwards. We had booked a spa hotel for Monday as we're on hols and I looked like a car crash victim lying by the pool in my bikini... Never mind enjoying the sunshine.... Beyond embarrassing as it was so bad!

CooEeeEldridge Sat 11-May-13 16:15:20

So just done the rat race half mucker, it was ace!!! LOVED the obstacles and camaraderie. I wore shorts, no chaffing but my knees are cut / bruised to pieces!!! Q for tough mudder people? Can there be much of a wait at 'big' obstacles? A couple of ones here there were 5-10 min waits, and for one (with 2 other path options) the main path was 30 mins!! Already looking to sign up to next one!!!

kaumana Sat 11-May-13 21:43:00

Well done CooEee Wear your bruises with pride!

Well done cooee!! We are signing up for rat race and spartan race too!

I shouldn't have worn the shirts they weren't Lycra type ones.

I didn't experience queuing at TM, longest wait was about a minute I think the others we got straight on with.

shanghaismog Mon 13-May-13 18:26:21

No queuing for us either but we did get an early start time - 8.40am. Was funny to see everyone coming in looking nervous and us heading out with out orange headbands smile

CooEeeEldridge Tue 14-May-13 09:10:21

Thanks guys! Definitely doing it again next year, and hopefully tough mudder if its in Kettering again. We had one hold up whilst on a very narrow path that an ambulance needed to get down (fair enough!) but there were a couple of bottle necks around a couple of obstacles, good point on waves shang we went at 1015 which is prime time I guess, early start next year!
