GET FIT and/or LOSE WEIGHT in 2013: Support and motivation thread(82 Posts)
I have decided to get fit in 2013 after being somewhat lazy in the second half of 2012 so thought I would start a support thread so we can motivate and support each other (and congratulate each other on our successes of course!).
Feel free to join, whatever your fitness goal is, whether it's running a marathon or 5K. Just post your fitness goal below and then keep us updated of your progress....
I will start: I am generally quite fit but got really lazy in the second half of 2012. My (first) fitness goal for 2013 is to run 10k by the end of February........my second goal is to tone up my bottom, as it used to be quite nice (if I do say so myself) but now it is looking rather out of shape......

I'm in, I am doing my practice Duke of Edinburgh Gold expedition which starts on the first of April for five days of walking. My first goal of the year is to walk more so that I can do it!
First goal is to complete c25k.... Was on week 7 just before Xmas. Not been running for a week so might restart at week 6. It ends on week 8
January I hope to do shred daily.... Only managed to day 16 last time.

Pixie I did my Gold D of E a few years ago on horseback. Was great! Good luck with that!
Tiffany good luck with the running. I always find it hard to get started but then becomes addictive!
I'm in, could do with losing two stone and getting fitter.

There are power walk apps... I use one! And yes, it's addictive so may move on to something else too
Last time I completed c25k I just stopped... I need constant goals to keep me going I think
I want to join and I mean it this time!!! I am going to run 3k twice a week and 5k once a week, and do WW until I lose 1.5 stone.
I am 5.3 and weigh 11 stone- want to get back to 9.5 stone and be fitter!

Croccy: Thanks I thought about horseback but have a weak bladder so thought it'd be a bad idea! Haha! (We need a dopey face or something on here!)
Squats are supposed to be good for bottom toning I think? I hate squats, I would like to do them though.
Karbea: What improvement would you most like to see? And what type of exercise do you enjoy? Or do you have an event coming up? If you can run then C25K is a good one, DP has done it in the past and is doing it again in the new year to get back into running (apparently!). If you have nice places to walk nearby then walking is good too. I'm really lucky and have the South Downs 5 mins from my front door and a neighbour who has an eccentric terrier I can borrow for walking!
Karbea how fit are you now? Do you want to lose weight or just get fitter? Perhaps a goal like Couch to 5k might be a good one to start with if you can run? I understand there's an iPhone app.
Pixie the horse riding D of E was great fun, but you do need to be able to ride to a certain standard. Walking will be fun too I'm sure!
Well I've got a walking plan sorted for the new year now I've written it on a general healthiness improvement thread but will copy and paste the week I am working up to doing:
Monday 18th March: Walk 130 minutes.
Wednesday 20th March: Walk 9 miles.
Saturday 23rd March: Walk 16 miles.
Sunday 24th March: Walk 9 miles.
Monday 25th March: Walk 140 minutes.
Then I get a week's break before my expedition starts on the 1st April!
I start tomorrow with a 25 minute walk, and walking every Monday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. The Sunday walk is a more casual walk, the Saturday a fitness walk and the Monday and Wednesday with 20kg weights on my back. Though not tomorrow, as I don't have my backpack with me :/
Croccy: Yeah I thought that'd be the case. I'm a paddler and was looking at doing canoeing or kayaking for it, but due to health issues I was choosing between painful knees or painful chest with breathing difficulties, and I thought that the knees would be simpler to train up for it and I would see if I could hack the pain! If I can't then I'll do without the expedition and get a partial Gold award and know that I tried
I started C25K today and really enjoyed it. I'm planning on doing some strength training on the days I'm not running, and stomach toning every day.
I'd like to lose a stone or so but mostly I'm targeting stomach fat. My twins are 5 now, can't blame the baby weight forever .
About to do my first run. Is it the NHS c25k everyone's doing?
I went horse riding today. Not really as hard as running or anything but better than sitting in my bum
peachy I started with that one... Loved Laura and her motivational tips. Now I use a different one which let's you play your own music too.
I went for a C25K app that played music, didn't pay much attention to the details! I needed the music to help me along.
I also got a fitbit for Christmas so that's helping me along. I need all the encouragement I can get!
I have done the podrunner intervals before, but not NHS. Need a change! Went out yesterday! Feeling very proud of myself and a little drunk on G and T!
chutney: what stomach toning are you doing? I was thinking of doing crunches but have found out that they are effective up but only to a certain point so you need variety which I don't know about really
I am not sure what to do apart from crunches and hooping. I have my hula hoop and hopefully will have room to hoop by the end of the month <<fingers crossed>>
I did the MuTu system earlier this year ConfusedPixie. I'd done a lot of abdominal work with the 30 day shred and it helped tone everywhere but my stomach. I saw about MuTu on MN and figured that it was down to having a diastasis after my twins. Following that programme really helped but I fell off the wagon a bit on the healthy eating side in December. I'm hoping I can tie it all together next year and finally get a toned middle.

Cycled for three hours today
I biked for just over an hour today, then walked the dog for over an hour as well.
Then I bought some mini eggs from the shop and scoffed them.
Ha ha I did eat a pile of cheese, we have soooo much left over from Christmas!
I've decided I'm going for a week of getting back into the fitness side before overly tackling the diet side. Nothing to do with all the nice stuff still around. Oh no.
I did run 2 today and felt fantastic afterwards. It was a beautiful day, not sure it's going to be quite the same at 6am on Thursday!

Over the last 2 years i've lost over 2 stone, still a bit to lose (probably more since xmas) - I KNOW what works for me. I have classes (zumba, body attack, body pump, CX - les Mills stuff) that i actually love, but due to illness / commitments i haven't been for quite a while!
You guys can kick my ass !! I try to get to about 5/6 a week, but i work FT and DH works shifts.
I want to concentrate on getting fit now rather than weightloss...(am hoping i'll tone up).
A friend has also asked if i'll do GNR this year with her....i'm scared, as I'm not a runner, but wondering if I should go for it?!
I've just done a cardio workout on sparkpeople, DP came in and laughed at me (whilst I was laughing at myself and my inability to do it!) and the workout only gave me 8 points on fitocracy so not as great as I'd hoped! I may do some hooping later. I can't navigate sparkpeople very well though :/

I've only done a 10k bit a friend has done the GNR and she loved it. Go for it.
Glad I found this thread. I'm aiming to do some form of exercise everyday, it can be anything incl walking and for any period of time but the point is that I'm doing something and will hopefully be consistant with it. My diet is on the whole ok and its just the exercise part which needs working on really.
Did a half hour run yesterday (with a couple of minute stops) and I'll prob do a exercise DVD tonight.

Been trying to get to the gym for a lookaround and some info. Seems reasonable.
Took me 30 mins to run 3 miles. Feeling smug, though want to get faster!
Just thought i'd post <pant pant> that I've just got back from my first zumba class for a month & by god, you'd think i'd never done it before. The sweat is pissing out of me, whatever pelvic floor muscles I had have obviously disappeared over Christmas too!
BUT it was fantastic!! Can't wait for Saturday morning for body pump & zumba....
Feel loads better now I've been!

Well done! I was pouring sweat yesterday too. I have to literally wee three times in the hour if I do Zumba! Not sure where the other posters have got to...
I am doing the gym twice this weekend. Eek! Don't normally go but we are at a hotel for our tenth WA so I am going to make use.
Btw I want to do the Great West Run. Have you started training? I did a ten k in Sept but have slackened off since. Ever done a half marathon north?
Just looking at sparkpeople..........hmm I like it! I am very unfit but have decided 2013 is my year of fitness.
I haven't done a half marathon Peachy, I live about 20 miles from Newcastle & I would love to do the Great North Run, loads of my friends do it & try & persuade me every year.
i'm not a natural runner...far more a dancer (though don't look it). I know it would be a huge challenge for me & it scares me a bit!!!
I love going to classes because i like group exercise. IF I do go for GNR I have to apply for a ballot place by this weekend.

I used to before the kids - then got really fat and stopped. Then lost most of the weight and started again, but want to crank up the challenge and do the GWR as am near Exeter. Also want to lose last stone. I run three miles about four times per week.
I wish I could dance - I royally suck at it!
How much do you run? I like classes if they don't involve dancing! Spinning is more my style.
I used to run 3 times a week about usually about 3 miles. I just didn't get any faster....i found it hard to build strength & stamina.
I now do a core strength, 3 zumba, one body pump (weights class) & body attack (the most intense of all) each week. Have lost about 3 stone in 2.5 years. Am really happy with it, but i know i will always need to do it & as i gain weight really quickly.
I feel so much better than i used too. I guess i still need to lose a stone or thereabouts!
How do you fit in all those classes! I want to start a regular high cardio one- which is best?

I walked 9.9 miles today with sodding wet feet
as my trainers are shite and desperately need replacing! My knees hurt, my chest is painful from the cool air and a new, fitting bra that I'm still getting used too, and I'm really tired, but otherwise feel good I also bought some new hill walking boots today, I'm so glad that I waited for a delivery as I chose a gorgeous leather pair which are lovely and snug I'm very chuffed with them actually, very old school style walking boots that will need looking after, but should last for years and years.
RE sparkpeople, I'm not liking it so much now I'm using it really, it's a brilliant resource, but I'm finding it difficult to actually use, and it's very calories/weight based and I have no interest in counting calories or losing weight. Using fitocracy and runkeeper seems to be a good combo for me at the moment

I did Body Pump & Zumba this morning! Was well & truly buggered. But felt great. Body Pump is one of my favourites, I can really see the changes in my body shape.
Mon: CX (core) & Zumba
Thurs: Zumba & Body Attack
Sat am: Body Pump & Zumba
Hoping to squeeze another toning one in on a Tues if I can.
Zumba is fabulous & I love to dance!! I put everything I have into it.
The classes I go to are Les Mills franchise & they change routines on a 3 monthly basis which is great.
Well done on you guys for getting stuck in.

Answering your question though Peachy, zumba classes very much depend on the instructors. I'm so lucky.
Nothing wrong in trying out a few classes in your area! If dancing isn't your thing then Spinning is supposed to great & boxercise too.

Think I'll try body pump when DH comes back on Fri. Or spinning. Do you read the Times? There is a suppliment every day this week on toning and fat burning. Really good. Just bought some dumb bells- eek!
No, don't read The Times. Might pick it up tomorrow. I'm still aching from Body Pump on Sat morning!!! Just finished Core Strength & zumba tonight....my abs will feel it tomorrow, but its a good pain.
Les Mills calls it Body Pump, there is another franchise that calls it PumpFX. I assume anything with 'Pump' in the title is bar & weight work!

and being a horse for 4yo charge this evening Good aching though, not the usual aching, that's quite calm at the moment Can't complain! I have a 'rest day' in terms of walking tomorrow, but I am working later than usual and then have an hour and a half of climbing and an hour swimming tomorrow evening! First swimming lesson since I was a kid, really looking forward to it!

I will join you all. Lost a couple of stones last year mainly through careful eating (smaller portions, less snacking). Towards the end of the year I joined a gym and started swimming. Loved it. But Christmas has made me into a blob. I haven't dared weigh myself properly but think I've put on half a stone. So new year and all that - want to lose another stone and a half - 21lbs. Same fitness regimen (cardio - swimming & gym work) thrice a week, smaller portions and less/no snacking.
Went swimming 45 mins on Saturday and 45 mins gym work (treadmill, stepper) yesterday but still haven't got my eating on track (still being seduced by leftover Xmas goodies!).
But tomorrow is another day. I will go swimming again and start eating better (after tonight's key lime pie!).
Well done! I just did my Times work out with weights. Can feel every muscle which is a good sign. Onward and upward!

No swimming in the end today, I was gutted. They emailed me back this morning saying that they only had one space left in the class and the other person had only let her know this morning I asked for those 2 places last week! Cheeky beggars. So No lessons for now, but at least it means that my climbing partner and I can have a good catch-up and giggle

I weighed myself today and am 66.1kg, 2 more than a couple of months ago. DP and I have gained a bit of weight over the past couple of month. Too many takeouts and big meals! We're focussing on eating healthily and less takeouts this year, and treating ourselves less frequently to cheese feasts!
North: that sucks! Are you going to do anything instead or have a rest day?
Bssh: Do you find doing it thrice a week okay, or do you find yourself wanting to do it more/less often? I am debating joining a gym and whilst I couldn't do much cardio in the gym I could do weights and swimming But I haven't used a gym properly before, found it boring and couldn't get into the swing of things
The classes I do aren't part of a gym, they are a couple of
very gorgeous fabulous lads who formed their own company & run classes in schools/halls etc so I don't have other classes to go to. Thurs classes have been cancelled as school isn't available
I'll be extra strict on portion control until then & will probably go for long walk on Fri

I don't need 2 places for myself btw, DP was going to come with me We're both relieved as he wants a break after a couple of full on days at uni and I'm shattered.
I have now also been roped into climbing on Friday night too by the only two friends I have as we haven't had a chance to spend time with all three of us since before Christmas. I'll be sleeping halfway up the wall by Sunday!

Pretty good set up then for your classes, I'd love to be able to do that kind of thing! I think I'd die in one of those classes Have you got nice areas to walk nearby? I must admit that I didn't realise how many nice walks there were near me until I started researching walks to do later, now I'm really up for training to do longer walks more frequently
Confused, i live in the heart of Northumberland, I truly believe i have some of the most glorious scenery in the country around me!! Some I have to drive to like Hadrian's Wall / Pennine Way & shorter ones close by. We walk a lot in the summer with DS.
Actually just writing this has inspired me! A walk on Saturday it is
Oh! Driving distance to Hadrian's Wall! If only I was! Very jealous I'm also quite luckily though for walking, I live a two minute walk from part of the south downs and have some nice seaside walks within a fifteen minute drive. I'm doing a really weird walk on saturday despite this, walking through industrial estates for two of the ten miles

We are only an hour or so from the Lakes too, so in the summer we drive across there.

Ah, but I've lived by the sea most of my life, the downs is a welcome change to places I've lived in the past though. I was supposed to walk today, but ended up at work until 5:30 and have just got home. Not sure whether to go for a alk in the dark or just leave it today :/
From Monday DP and I are having a contest to see who can get the most Fitocracy points by the end of the month and on a monthly basis for the rest of the year. I must beat him
ConfusedPixie I really enjoy going to the gym as when I'm using the treadmill and stepper I can catch up on BBC New 24 or listen to my own music; if I'm swimming I just go into a kind of zone which chills me out even though I'm swimming really fast - it's the silence I like when swimming. I'd like to go an extra day (so 4 times) but it's not really practical right now.
So, I thought I'd put on weight over the holiday season but actually I've lost 2 lbs so despite over-eating it must have been the exercise that kept the weight off.
So that's 30lbs off since June 2012. I'm back monitoring calories/food portions, reduced snacking/eating only when hungry so fingers crossed...
Can I join in? I seriously need to get motivated, I am generally a fit person but over the last year eveything has gone to pot. My problem is getting started, hopefully once I get the bug again I will keep going. I like cycling to work but the rain before xmas and now the freezing conditions have really put me off! I am planning to get to the running club tomorrow at 9am to give myself a good push.

I did a ten mile walk today in the cold and drizzle. I hurt like hell and I'm climbing in the morning I will die by the end of tomorrow!
Bssh: That's fair enough, I wouldn't mind going and watching TV on the machines, I would end up hogging the treadmill though as it's about all I can do I wonder if I could get away with four hours on a treadmill?

Pass: Feel free Group exercising seems to be my thing I've discovered, having other people who are relying on me organising the exercise event so therefore need me to be there stops me backing out so often!

Have just been chatting to instructor on twitter & he's persuaded me to do all 3 classes on Sat morning....what have I let myself in for !!!!

I climbed on Saturday, 6 climbs which was good considering we were late and then spent an hour hanging around filling in forms! Haven't done anything since then though.
I had a massive blister on the back of my ankle from walking which burst during my first climb on Sunday. By the end of climbing it was mostly off and dirt had gotten under the skin so I had to cut the skin off and now it's cracked and dry Anyone have any tips to help it heal? I left it alone yesterday but it was cracking today so I lathered on some of the old fashioned thick nivea cream (the plainest thing I have in the house) and have bunged a plaster on it. I'm hoping that softens it enough that walking tomorrow will be okay!
Ouch your heel sounds painful! What about vaseline? That might help.

It's alright this morning, the skin is growing back so I think it just needed some moisture to heal, dpb has a massive tub of vaseline somewhere so I'll try find that when I get home to slather on! Thanks!

The skin still hasn't completely healed on my ankle! But I'm back to climbing again after a few missed weeks. Feels good!
Hello, jumping back in here. I've increased my gym sessions to 4-5 times a week (need to get value for money out of the monthly £££ fee!). I was getting too cold for swimming so am exclusively (until it warms up more) doing cardio at the gym - speed walking on a treadmill at around 80% of my maximum heartrate so I'm getting quite sweaty doing it plus using the stepper machine. 45 mins in total. I feel so fit and energised!
Started the 5:2 way of eating last week and surprisingly have managed to exercise on my fast days. I find exercise an appetite suppresent (sp?). Hae lost 5lbs since I started 5:2 so that takes me to total 51lbs lost since February last year.
When I reach target weight I am going to ramp up to a heavy lifting strength training programme.
I am addicted to exercise I think!
Nice work How do you know that you're at 80% of your heart rate? & With the 5:2 thing, do you have nothing but water on fast days or is it liquid foods? How much more are you aiming to lose? 51lb so far is awesome.
I'm not exercising much at the moment embarrassingly. I want to get my hoop out though!
