Anyone doing it?

Either London or Edinburgh?

Anyone interested in a fitness / support thread?

I'm doing it for the 3rd time in May (missed last year, as it was the night DS was born!) and really looking forward to it, but feeling a bit more apprehensive, as I'm not as fit as I used to be!

me too!!

Whoop whoop Haribo - for your third moonwalk . I hope that you have lots of wisdom to pass on. Like Arfur, I have done the Race for Life for a few years now but I've signed up for the moonwalk this year.

Is it a really, really, really long way???

Went out walking for first time last night walked very briskly for an hour - I guess its a start!

kiwibella · 15/01/2009 22:05

great start Arfur... how did you feel after that? I reckon I could probably do about three miles in an hour which is shocking if you do the maths and calculate how long it will take to finish 26 miles .

arfur · 16/01/2009 00:03

Felt ok thanks was quite puffed about 20 mins in but got past that and was fine until the REALLY steep hill on the way back! Back has been twinging a bit today which is not something that normally troubles me but I guess its the shock of exercising! Am hoping to go again tomorrow night. Know what you mean about the time. How long did it take you each time? Im not going to try and compete just would like a vague idea of what time me and my friend will be staggering off to Paddington!

Can I join - I'm doing the London Moonwalk this year for the first time! In awe at you Haribo - hope you can give us all some advice!

Have you all got special walking trainers (I mean for your feet - not a coach!) - I'm wondering if I need to get some.

walking trainers? I didn't know that there was a product but I would be interested to know more. I just have my runners... and I bought a skipping rope on the weekend to get a few mins extra in here and there, as I can.

I've also been looking at the book written by (forgotten the founders name right now). Has anyone got it or used it?

Hi guys!

I don't have any specific walking trainers, just normal regular ones!!

The first time I did the Moonwalk, it took me 6.5 hours. The second time it took 7.5 hours because the girl I did it with hadn't ever walked more than 22 miles and hit a wall (mentally, not ACTUALLY! ) - that last 4 miles took FOREVER!!!!

My advice would be make sure you have, once or twice, walked the full 26 miles, so you know what you are in for and so you MENTALLY KNOW you can do it...

The last bit (when you are back in Hyde Park and that big pink tent is tantalisingly close) is def. the hardest - you keep thinking that you are finished and you realise that you have another mile or so to go!!! But (like child birth) once you cross that line, you will forget everything and feel on top of the world (and ready for a sleep!)

I've signed up for the Edinburgh one too (me??? mad???? ) which I reckon will be great!

Have any of you got the training packs yet? I thought they'd have arrived by now, but I haven't seen mine??

6.5 hours - OMG

We are doing about 4 miles an hour at the moment, but haven't done more than 6 miles yet.

What was your training schedule Haribo? Any tips for other gadgets we should get?!

We haven't had any packs yet either - do they give you a training schedule?

I wouldn't bother with any gadgets... You don't need much and the only thing (IMO) you need on the night are a lipsyl and some hankies.

Yes, the pack will contain a guide on how much to walk each week.. I should know but can't remember a thing (baby brain!)

My only other recommendation is to keep the 'costumes' sensible - it feels like such a great idea to have headdresses etc., but after the first 10 miles... Not so much!!!

Keep it simple and comfy! And pair up.. make sure that you have a plan if (god forbid) someone isn't able to finish... You need to stay together.

I couldv'e killed the girl I did it with in 2007 for not training a bit more, but a deal is a deal and we agreed we'd stay together and we did. TBH, if we hadn't, she wouldn't have made it around and I'd have felt like a total shit, so the achievement would have been totally undermined, IYSWIM. If there are quite a few of you doing it, then I'd say pair up so that everyone is walking 'with' someone...

There are 4 of us, but one is only signed up the half marathon - do you know how it works? Do we all start at the same time / same place and she just finishes half way?

We have worked out our own training plan, as we are still waiting for the packs!

Report
Haribosmummy · 22/01/2009 11:37

Yes, you all start together.. When you get to 12.5 miles, there or thereabouts, your friend will peel off to finish and you will keep going! You will be able to stay together right up until she needs to separate to finish.
