Fellow parents, I wanted to share with you my recent discovery as I blunder my way through the hurdles of what I loosely refer to as my exercise regime en route to the holy grail of fitness. Gawd knows what the neighbours imagine as they hear the sound of frenzied whipping and heavy breathing in the back garden of an evening: it's merely a middle aged woman acting like a 6 year old as she skips away her middle tyre. Having watched a few Youtube clips to check out some techniques and warm up routines, I began on a very modest incline of 80 skips at intervals of 20 and have now worked up to the unimpressive heights of 200 skips at intervals of 25 with a brief breather in between. I have noticed a definite increase in my fitness and feel slightly more able to breathe when I finish my 200 skips than when I started. I am aiming for a 10 minute daily session and will keep you posted. I recommend skipping for these reasons: it's cheap, simple, private, you can fit it in anytime as long as you have adequate space to swing a rope (outside is recommended), it's a cardiovascular exercise and, as with all exercise, it is energising. I practise in the evenings when I put the dinner on to cook. If nothing else, it will give your kids a laugh as they see you acting their age! Happy skipping!
