went for my first ever run today! need garment assistance!

I did a 1.2 mile run this morning which I know isn't far but I'm building up, I enjoyed it. I was doing it 'one armed' though because one hand was permanently holding my leggings up and stopping my phone from bobbing out of my pocket 😆. I probably looked ridiculous.
What do I wear on my bottom half? How do I secure my phone? (for music)
Other tips gratefully received.

I had exactly the same problem.
I went to JL and bought a pair of yoga pants which are stretchy cotton and have a high wide waistband. Problem solved and they're so cosy to pull on at 7am!

I tuck my phone into my bra. Not ideal; I will probably buy an arm band for my phone one of these days.

I have some shiny disco pants with a high waist that dont fall off, they just look like leggings with sheen. I'll try them.

Oh and re phone. I have a stretchy Nike top to wear over my running shirt. It has zip up pockets. My friend has a lanyard with plastic grips for her phone but it bobs around and id be worried it would fall out.

Get a well fitting pair of running / Capri trousers and a bum bag or arm-band for your phone. And good trainers and sports bra!

I've got one of these www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00ATIE5ZE/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1454080540&sr=8-1&pi=SX200_QL40&keywords=running%20buddy%20pouch&dpPl=1&dpID=41VNN2XgAmL&ref=plSrch&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21. It's brilliant. Definitely worth the money if you decide running is for you. I use mine when I'm walking the dog and when we go on holiday and I just need my phone and a bit of cash, as well as when I go running.

If you have a Decathlon near you they have great, reasonably priced running gear

The leggings thing drives me bonkers - they are all sort of low rise Angry

I googled "high waisted cropped leggings" and came up with a few and bought lots of pairs. Pineapple did one and there were quite a few on Amazon as well (one of which was impregnated with caffeine to "tone legs" and cost about 80 quid - I didn't go with those Hmm)

They don't come with zipped pockets though - why not? So obvious that you need somewhere for your keys at the very least.

Cheap running leggings, with a drawstring waist and a zipped rear pocket in the waistband. I got mine from the supermarket a couple years ago, I'm guessing they were about £12.
I also use an arm pocket thingy as I take 2 different asthma inhalers with me as well as phone, keys, music, and that works really well; stays in place, not uncomfortably tight, does the job.
If it's cold, wear a hat - easy to take off and carry when you get warm, and really effective at keeping you warm. I also wear gloves (normal, non running ones) in cold/windy/wet weather, as it's much nicer to have warm hands but they don't make you overheat.

I've seen a lot of sleeves with thumb holes in them while browsing today. Is this a thing? Better than gloves? I was going to attempt ear muffs instead of hat. Not sure how that will turn out.

Karimor isn't the best stuff but waaaaay better than hoiking up leggings the whole way round.
Tunebelt sell vv reasonable and surprisingly long lasting armbands

Thumb holes are more of a style thing.
It's worth getting a sports t-shirt. Close fitting is more comfortable than baggy jighling around, and cotton gets heavy and wet from sweat, and stays that way.

If you're comfortable, you're more likely to keep the interest up.

sleeves with thumb holes in them while browsing today. ... Better than gloves? I was going to attempt ear muffs instead of hat.

The whole clothes thing is a bit fraught b/c I guess some people need special clothes to have right mindset, whereas I'm a miser.

I need very flexible layers because I'm useless at the wrong temp & my hands may stay cold. Just 1 x long sleeve top with thumb holes not for me. Cold days, I'd wear 2 layers on top to start (be warm enough) & wrap LS top around my waist when I get warm.

I also have fingerless gloves & sleeves (you can buy sleeves by themselves, they wrap around fingers when not required on arms). And 1-2 neck-buff/snoods that also work as ear covers. Everything small can squeeze into pockets if not worn.

I've never had lycra running kit (not counting the sleeves). Maybe superwicking properties means runner is always perfect temperature no matter how cold at start or hard working they end up? (I don't believe that for a moment, obviously!!).

I've got cheap running leggings from sports direct with a pocket at the back big enough for my phone and car key. The brand is Hind I think. Then I wear a shock absorber bra and in cold weather I have a tight fitting karrimor vest with a long sleeved hooded top which is slightly fleecy inside (also Hind). I've got a reflective shower proof jacket from mountain warehouse for in the dark/rain. My long sleeves come over my hands to keep them warm. You can get warm head band things for your ears but they look stupid on me! I'm looking for a good cap to wear for rain/sun protection. My top and leggings together cost less than 20 quid.

I like using the thumb hole things when it's not cold enough for gloves but a bit chilly when you set off

Just been to sports direct and bought what diddly suggested more or less. Spent just over £17 which isn't bad at all.

I do agree though that if I'm comfortable I'm far more likely to keep it up. The thought of running today in stupid fally down leggings and bobbing phone was putting me right off.
So when I go out today do I try to beat my time/distance/neither?

The main thing is to find time & motivation to keep going :).
Most the advice for how to improve speed-time is written for people who already routinely run 1+ hour at very good times.

Instead you need to look for advice how to help beginners to improve their speed-stamina, put aside the other types of advice.

Stick to what you are doing this week and build up slowly, last thing you want is an injury like shin splints or something. Wouldn't worry about speed yet. Time or distance should be built up gradually, the golden rule is usually to increase by no more than 10% a week. When I started off I left a day in between each run to recover, in fact two years later I still usually do.

I got bought a flipbelt for Christmas and love it for carrying an array of different things. Handy for those tights that don't have any pockets.
