Shine Walk questions

I'm doing the Shine Walk in September. I have a few questions for people who have done it before.

  1. What should I carry? I was thinking water, snacks (not sure what), a spare pair of trainers and socks incase my feet hurt, money and phone. Oh and a waterproof.
  2. I haven't been able to train at night as my town is dodgy. Is this a problem?
  3. I'm only at 10 miles so far. Will I be ok? Obviously I'll train to get further but I'm not sure I'll get to 26.
  4. I'm only at 19-22 minute mile pace. Is that ok?

Hi- its amazing! I'm sure you will manage but have you considered the half? U still have time though.

Proper trainers and socks that you are training in will be fine.

Layers are good.

Snacks are important for morale! Bananas are handed out I think. But bring a few bits. Good luck! Also that pace is fine.

Great thanks. I want the challenge. I've ran/walked a half before so want something more.
Is it just bananas they hand out?

They hand stuff out but if you are in the late walk and a bit slow nothing is left.

I managed it last year with no training except running round after the kids!

Really you will be fine is good fun we are doing it again this year Grin

I've done the moonwalk a couple of times and would suggest the following...

Drink plenty, plenty of water the day before so you are properly hydrated when you start. That was a tip given to me by a marathon runner.

Get some anti blister stuff to pack in your bum bag. Compeed do one. It's in a small Lipsil type container.

Pack some jelly babies!

I did it last year Adam doing it again this year.

  1. Carry water and energy snacks (like jelly babies). Don't haul a spare pair of shoes round with you!
  2. Don't worry about not training at night, as long as you have done some distance
  3. We did one training walk of 21 miles last year but nothing longer and are planning the same this year.
  4. That pace will be fine, there will be people going faster and slower than that.

I've done three Moonwalks and have never got past 18 miles in a training walk. I would work on your pace though, just because it will take an awful lot longer if you don't. I've gone from 17-ish minute miles to about 13.5 (but only for 5-mile walks, not sure how long I could sustain it).

Take something like flapjacks and jelly beans. Spare socks but not spare shows.

I did the half last year and am hopefully doing it again this year. Agree with taking jelly babies and muesli bars. Blister stick from boots was awesome as we're 1000 mile socks. Amazon. :) good luck!

Thanks. I'm a bit worried today. Only managed 7 miles. Was rough terrain but oh god... I have 1000 mile socks. They are great. I think spare trainers will really help. They won't be heavy to carry and I'll discard the first pair. I'm really worried about the distance. I'm very overweight and my feet hurt a lot.

Don't drink too much on your way round so you don't have to keep stopping for a week!

It is hard on the feet/legs/hips but not the morale - there's a really good atmosphere which keeps you going.

I've done that and the Moonwalk several times. I did the Moonwalk in May as a last minute stand-in for someone, having done absolutely no training whatsoever. It was fine!

Pee tip: go at around the 2-mile point. No one else does so there are no queues.

6 miles run/walk today. Need to do a big walk but I get bored. My friends who are doing it with me don't live anywhere near me. Any advice to stop the boredom?

have you had gait analysis done? i thought i couldn't run due to my weight as my hips would scream in agony. I had gait analysis done and it turns out i ??over pronate. This means my foot collapses inwards as it hits the floor.

As a result i bought a pair of support trainers and the pain has gone!! magic!

i would be investing in a decent pair of trainers. mine cost over £100 , i nearly fell through the floor but they were the best thibgs ive ever bought.

i can't imagine putting on a new pair of trainers mid walk is going to help at all. they may even make it harder if they are not worn in.

small independent running shops offer gait analysis. its so worth it.

i am by no means a serious runner but i at least can do it now.

Tissues is a great idea. Thanks. Yes I've had gait analysis and have a few pairs of trainers that suit my pronation. By changing trainers to a new pair halfway I don't mean a NEW pair. I just mean a different pair. They are used and I've broken them in.

They did send a training plan but I have the added complication of training for something else at the same time so it's all a bit muddling! I do get bored on longer walks and my ipod runs out of battery at around 2 hours. It's just a little shuffle.

I am listening to books on Audible. Worth every penny for long walks!
I also have fitbit flex. I am trying to walk at least 15K steps a day in August. For moonwalk I did long walks on Saturdays. It was v. important for mevto do a couple of 20 miles long before the actual.event to see how I feel. Moonwalk's gard bit us doing it over night. My top tip is to get an extra nap on Saturday in the afternoon if one walks overnight.

I am unudual in that I waljed in my sandals. I got blisters 2 miles before the final line. I used sterile needle to burst them, desinfected, pyt cussioned plasters on, changed into my trainers I carried with me and finished pain free!
If I am to walk another marathon I will train following their advice. I did it half hearthedly and didn't enjoy it as much as I could have.
I may even train to learn to use nordic poles Grin

I am doing the half marathon that starts at 20:25. I am doing it on my own as I was going to sign up with someone but they got cold fee. I live in Hornchurch. If you live near me, we could walk together some evenings or we could travel up together?
