strengthening legs

I need to strengthen my legs for running longer distances. Can anyone recommend anything that will target my legs. Thanks.

Do you mean exercises? Because running longer distances and speed training will strengthen your legs, you don't need anything else.

At the moment my legs can't cope with the longer distances

Squats, lunges and look also at glute exercises. Could also do plyometric exercises.

Running - do intervals and speed work as well as long runs. And Kenyan hills - brutal but good.

What bookish said. Some cross training would probably be beneficial too - I've been doing a fair bit of road cycling and mountain biking recently - I live in a very hilly area - and it's helped a lot with my running - I've sped up a lot and my legs are much stronger.
