Ive started to trying to walk more but I'm being scuppered by a ridiculous painful back after ive been walking for any length of time.

It's really intense and the only relief is to stop, sit down or put lots of pressure on it ?

Help ! I want to be able to walk for a couple of miles

X

I suffer from lower back pain, it's taken 2.5 years but I've finally been referred for an MRI scan to find out what's causing it. Mine is lower back/right hip. Sometimes the muscles go into spasm and then I can hardly move. It also then affects the sciatic nerve, so I get pains in my bum and down my leg.
Doctor hasn't been much help, they've given me naproxen, co-dydramol and diazepam which help to relax the muscles when they're in spasm but I can't take them and function properly.
I've also seen a chiropractor about every 6 weeks for the last 18 months or so, who has helped with the day to day pain. It might be worth trying a chiropractor? I go to a McTimoney one, she's fab!
I would say go to your GP as well, they might not help much in the first instance but if you go back each time it's bad, you might eventually get referred for a scan!

I do Pilates regularly. It doesn't stop my back problems, but ensures that my back is in better shape to start with, and I stretch most days.

I probably spend as much as I was doing just going to see the chiropractor once or twice a month, but I feel more in control.

Are you overweight at all? That doesn't help either. ( I am qualified to say that... I'm a size 16-18, and in the process of trying to shift a few ponds... It's so hard!)

Bear with me because I know this is a long shot, but are you wearing supportive shoes? I find that if my feet are stiff then I can experience knee or back pain. This article explains more (the first on a google search, so it might be worth exploring more if you think there's any merit in my whacky theory!).

Could also be weak abdominal muscles forcing lower back to compensate.
