Anyone know where I can find information about triathlons in 2015?I need something to aim for!

I know that the current season hasn't finished yet but that's a bit too soon for me!

I did a sprint through Uk triathlon this year which was very friendly and well organised.

Last January, I got off my couch where I had sat for the last 20 years, and decided I needed to do something about the spare tyre around my stomach.

I've now lost a sixth of my body weight and am feeling good and I think I need a challenge for next year to stop me getting too settled on the sofa in the dark winter months.

I'm thinking that a sprint tri may be something to aim for. Rather annoyingly those links don't list anything in 2015.

Do any old timers know of any early season, pool based sprint triathlons in the midlands/south yorkshire areas to give me something to aim for?

What's the difference between a triathlon and a sprint triathlon?

I'm no expert 'cause I've never done one, but from what I can see. A sprint Triathlon is a shorter swim (typically 400m) followed by a cycle of 10-15miles and then a 3 or 5k run. There are other longer distances for more experience, fitter people.

What sort of distance were you thinking of doing HeySoulSister?

LornMowa Yes!!!

The Scissett Triathlon is in early June every year. It's a sprint triathlon, organised by W Yorks Police, and I understand is very good for beginners. Ok, it is in West Yorks, but only just - less than a mile from S Yorks border. Handy 10 mins off the M1 at J38. I keep toying with the idea of doing it. It is very close to home for me.

I watched one recently at woburn ( using the lake)

It was a 500m swim, 21k ( I think) swim and a 5k run. Seemed doable and fun!

Open water swim tho! Shock

Distance. A sprint triathlon is half the distance of an Olympic distance triathlon.

Sprint is 750m swim, 20k bike 5k run
Oly is 150m swim, 40k bike, 10k run

However, there are quite a lot of 'super sprint' events held now which are shorter still, and sprint events with pool based swims tend to be around 400m swim.

Search the British Triathlon website for events near you or have a look at organisations such as Human Race, which organise events that are not on the Brit Tri website.

Thanks for the suggestion BikeSkiRun It looks a lovely venue. I have to admit I was hoping for something a bit earlier in the year but its a possibility. There is one in my home town but its in August and I'm not sure my resolve is strong enough to keep up all three disciplines until then

There are various sites you can search on - e.g. www.triathlonengland.org/take-part/events

A lot of events haven't necessarily finalised dates yet, so the calendar is pretty empty apart from the really big events, but there will definitely be many more appearing nearer the time. Usually you find more pool-based tris early in the season, when it's too cold for open water.

Good luck! It's totally doable btw. I learnt to swim front crawl last October, and it gave me the kick up the bum to get off the sofa and start exercising, with the aim of doing a triathlon. I started running with C25k and doing spin classes in November. I did a pool-based sprint in May, an Olympic in June, another sprint in July and another Olympic in August. I've signed up for a half ironman for next year. It is a little addictive ;)

Ahh spinning!! Now I see why there's a spinning room randomly at the side of the local open water lake! To practice triathlon stuff of course!

That's the sheer hellish misery joys of 'brick training' - quickly changing from one discipline to another so your muscles get used to changing behaviour quickly.

Wow, lots of inspiring stories here!
HeySoulSister and LornMowa, I'd be interested in something in the Midlands too, either that or somewhere in Hampshire.

Have just started running, need to get my speed up swimming (regularly swim 1km but would be aiming for about 10mins for 400m) and the bike is coming along v slowly!

Def needs to be a sprint distance ideally some time in May.

Let me know how you are getting on! !
