Clothes for running in the rain?

What should one wear? I'm getting hooked but only have trainers so far. It's been fine in vest tops and shorts or even jeans so far but what can I wear which is waterproof but not sweaty in the rain?

Unless it is really lashing down I wouldn't wear waterproofs, just technical (not cotton ) clothing that is still comfy when wet. If it is lashing down then lightweight breathable waterproof jacket to keep my core warm/dry.

Oh, and maybe a cap to keep rain out of eyes.

What's technical clothing? What does special running gear do? Maybe I need to start getting some bits.

Unless it's very cold you're probably better without a waterproof as you will just get sweaty. If you wear technical fabrics then they don't soak up the rain so you don't feel too wet.

I've just been out running in it - I jist wear my usual Nike shorts and a t-shirt. Can't bloody stand rain in normal life and normal clothes but I quite like it out running - especially on a warmish day.

If you can afford it do - its so much comfier, especially if you have been running in jeans

Generally it will be a kind of soft silky fabric that is very comfy next to skin and remains that way even when you sweat/are wet. Can also keep you warmer/cooler.

It also makes you feel like a "proper" runner which is actually quite a good boost.

Oh yes - and a baseball cap, but I always wear a baseball cap come rain or shine.

X posts! Proper running clothing keeps you more comfortable. It doesn't have to be really expensive. Aldi have decent running gear in at Times and also sports direct. Technical fabrics are not cotton.

I have a fantastic lightweight, breatheable water resistant jacket that I got from Aldi last winter for about £20. It's predecessor was £6, 6 years before that. Great for winter.

I also have a sleeveless wind proof/shower proof gilet (sleeveless jacket) that I wear most of the time.

If its more than a drizzle, I often wear a fleece, sports bra and shorts (plus hat) as the fleece will keep the rain off and not get soggy. If its warm and raining, then tech t shirt and shorts.
I get my running stuff from sports direct normally as its cheap and cheerful

Thank you, just had a look on ebay. I know, jeans I didn't quite feel the part! Maybe I'll get some of the leggings (tights they're called?) for now, and keep an eye out for vests too. I'm really starting to enjoy it, it's taken a month or two of perseverance

I just got some proper running leggings and top and it feels so much better! Plus dries off pretty much straight away in the rain. Got shower/wind proof gilet as well for when it's really lashing down.

Do you need to wash it after every run? I run about every other day so it'll spend as much time being washed as it will bring worn.

I wash every time as I get so sweaty it is minging - when I'm away and have to rewear my kit I hate it

I'm a skanky moo and wash it about every other time. Will be requesting some more lovely running gear for my birthday in a couple of months and then I will probably wash it every time.

When you're washing your kit be sure to check the label first as some has to be washed without fabric conditioner otherwise it loses it's sweat wicking. Enjoy your shopping trip, be careful, shopping for running kit is addictive!

Bumping this up a bit and this may be crazy question - is there such a thing as waterproof or washable running shoes? I can't run on our roads as they're very narrow and have no pavement and cars come whizzing by at 50mph (when the speed limit's 30). I run at least part of my time in the woods behind the house, which get really muddy. I don't want to spend a fortune on shoes that are going to fall apart in the mud. Any ideas?

Agree that TKMaxx is good for running kit. If you belong to Costco, or have a friend who does, they also have decent running kit that isn't too expensive. I like to get properly kitted out to run - when I graduated from C25K I treated myself to a Sweaty Betty top and hoodie, but it certainly isn't necessary. Shopping for running kit is indeed addictive!

Trail shoes are designed to get wet and muddy, and some are waterproof. Womens running mag often have reviews

Also try sealskinz socks which are waterproof.

My kit comes from sport direct, charity shops and aldi. Somehow I seem to have quite a lot now.

I still get hot in the winter.

If it's about zero degrees/icy then I might put a long sleeve running top over the top of a running t shirt. However, after the first 10 mins I then have to stop to take the long sleeve top off and then I carry on wearing the short sleeve t shirt. On my legs I either wearing cropped running trousers or long ones depending on how cold it is.

I do sometimes start off wearing gloves but again I often end up taking them off after 10 mins. Although my ears do get cold so I now have a special running headband that has a wider bit at the ears to keep them warm but keeps top of head clear (otherwise I get too hot).
