Exercise

hips, thighs and tum

Can someone please tell me the best exercise to slim my hips. I have a waist, but my hips, bottom, tum, thighs are just big, fat, flabby, wobbly and totally out of proportion with the rest of my body.

I don't do much exercise apart from 1 hour walking each day.

I'm a size 12, but very snug fit. I'm only 5' 3

I don't think you can spot tone. You have to do a combination of cardio and strength training (ie squats) to tone in general.

I've been doing the Jillian michael a 30 day shred, which is intense but really works. And I think she has other DVDs to target areas such as bum/thighs and abs.

Exercise won't slim your tummy, hips or thighs. Diet will.

I have started SW, but I know from previous experience, even when I get down to my goal weight, I still have this stubborn area of fat on my hips.

I've also got the shred, but it hurts so much Sad, my poor knees can't take it!

Exercise won't help you lose fat?

Really?
Always worked a treat for me:o

Perhaps you're not doing it right Bonsoir?
Do whatever exercise you find easiest to stick to.

Fat on the lower body can be harder to shift, but it's not as bad for you as fat around the middle

Running.
Since i have taken it up seriously post-pregnancy my core/hips/upper legs are much stronger and more defined.
I'm not slim because i can't diet, but if you're combing the two you should have some success Smile

Agreed lots find running very good, c25k seems to help many people.
Intervals where you jog for 1 min and walk for one min (or jog/run as you get fitter) can also be effective.

I have always wanted to start up running, but never seem to have the right clothing? What do you wear to go running in? I've got loungewear that I wear to do my DVD's in Blush.

I've trimmed down in the past just doing floor exercises, starving, but I'm getting older and it just wont shift.

Just get a decent sports bra, and a half decent pair of trainers to start.
Maybe try couch to 5k? Or i used adidas micoach to build up from nothing.
Even now im running further, most of my kit is from primark with a bit of tk maxx thrown in for good measure Grin

curlingandtwirling · 17/02/2014 13:49

thanks Thursday I am going to pop into Primark and see what I can get, then if I can stick to my plan, I might invest further Grin.

So do I wear running trousers? Are they like leggings? I have trainers, although they are years old!

I just need to get rid of this weight/fat/wobble.

When i stared i just wore what jogging bottoms i had, but in general close fitting is better, less chance of rubbing.
I currently wear some primark skinny fitting, cuff ankled joggers-they are super comfy, fit me well but wont last long Sad
Running tights are made out of much more synthetic, thicker than legging material - i know i felt my bum wasnt quite so exposed in proper trousers rather than leggings Grin

I hope you get on ok. My toppest of top tips is dont try to do too much too quickly. Build up slowly.

Your message could have been me OP. Also trying to lose weight from the hip/thigh area, 5ft 3 and on SW.

I have been really dedicated for 6 weeks now, 2 nights at the gym doing cardio and toning exercises, 1 night playing netball...and running about after 2 year old Dd!!

My I've lost half a stone now and was getting quite down as didn't feel weight was shifting easily, usually when I feel this way I get despondent and give up. So this time I took all my measurements for the 1st time ever. Last night I retook them and have lost 12.5 inches overall!!

I have started running, on the treadmill now because of the rubbish weather. When I started I literally ran 1 min, stopped, then 2 mins and increased it from there. I'm now up to 4 miles regularly and really enjoy it!!

Good luck Smile

well done Poppins. Grin

I am really going to struggle to start with, so I don't think there is much chance of me overdoing it!

I'm a big comfort eater and find it hard to stick to anything if I don't see fast results.

I know I'm harping on about it a bit now, but thats the joy of starting with intervals in running.
You run a minute and it hurts. You look ahead to the end of the programme where allegedly you'll be running for 10mins - whatever!
Then the next week you've run 2/3 mins without really noticing.
Then before you know it, 5/6/7 ins easy peasy.
10 actual minutes done!

Progress is obvious. It's very heartening Grin

That's exactly why I have enjoyed running, I saw progress from the second time trying...I have become so competitive with myself!!

I'm also the same re dieting Curling, but even though its slowly shifting in the scales, the fact that I'm actually losing inches is keeping me going. I've never measured myself before so would probably have packed the diet in by now....but the tape measure is keeping me motivated now :-)

I need a tape measure.

To be honest, I haven't weighed myself for over a year, mainly because I know I'm at my heaviest. Most of my clothes are now at bursting point and I need to get my big ass in gear!

I am going to go for a run tomorrow night - can't tonight as working - but will report back and let you know how painful it was!

Brilliant, good luck and be sure to let us know how you get on. The first one is always the worst...and I think thinking about it is worse than doing it!!

Also - the Davina DVDs target the bum and use interval training. I've really noticed a difference.

I've borrowed a DVD - 10 min solution targeting the troublesome areas so will try it too. It has a resistance band with it, like a giant elastic band. I'm sure I'm going to cause some damage with that!

I'm already making up excuses in my head not to go out for a walk run tonight. I need to do it though. I need to stay motivated, but it's so hard.

Oi! Curling!
How'd you get on today?

Report
curlingandtwirling · 20/02/2014 08:56

I did it! I only managed about 20 mins, mostly walking, but I felt great when I got home! I live in quite a hilly area so I need to plan my route better for next time.

It was hard. My knees ached, I could barely breathe but I DID IT!

I feel so motivated today too Grin

Well done you!

Couch to 5k is a fabulous plan and will def help shift the weight where you want to lose it. I'm very pear shaped but running has really helped balance out my body. I started out with just tracky bottoms and bought proper stuff as i got into it. Decent running trainers are the most important thing.

Squats, lunges, etc will also help :)

Hi chopstheduck How do I find Couch 2 5K? Is it the NHS Living Well one?

Yay curling! Well done you!

I think you can get c25k apps, and podcasts. Perfect if you've got a smart phone.
Enjoy feeling pleased with yourself Smile

Well done Curling, that's the hardest one out of the way!! And hurting is good...hurting is toning (or at least that's what I try telling myself!!) :-)
