I've been through C25K, now running 7k happily 3-4 times a week. And in a moment of madness I've just signed up for a Race For Life 10k on July 7th.

Any words of wisdom on what I should be doing in the next few weeks? I'm not worried about time exactly, but want to run round properly iykwim

have fun and enjoy it!

If you can, Run 8 or 9k in the next couple of weeks. The atmosphere on the day will be fabulous and will get you round.

10k is a lovely distance.

Is it as simple as that then? I can run 8k no problem - its mostly that in my tiny town I have to run funny loopy routes to do more than 7k without having to run on the actual road and I get bored.
Will get on and map 9k and do 8k this afternoon

I honestly didn't find jumping from 5k to 10k all that difficult - I did it in three weeks having only started c25k 8 weeks before that. In just 11 weeks I've gone from dying at running 60secs to running 10k in 1hr 5mins non stop. Just find your groove and stay in it - slow your pace more than you think at the start and then when you hit that sweet spot in your rhythm your legs will do their own thing and get you round surprisingly comfortably I reckon. Just don't go out too fast and you'll be fine. If you can run 8k, 10k should be no problem, it's only another 15 minutes.

You'll be absolutely fine - I promise.
The adrenaline and the atmosphere on the day will carry you through no problems at all.
It's a great distance, and you'll be signing up for a half before you know it :-).
Eat a good breakfast on the day. Porridge or eggs are always my preference. Drink enough water the day before as well as the morning.
And enjoy every second :-). You'll suprise yourself

Try to avoid the temptation to do too much too soon, as this can lead to injury. But I' sure you can build up to 10k by 7th July.

CMOT, I just wanted to say good luck!! I'm supposed to be doing a 10K on July 14th, which would have been no problem except I developed a chest infection at the beginning of June and missed 2 1/2 weeks of my training programme Sad I started again on Wednesday with my running club and did a 5K today with them in 33:14, which I was pleased with considering I had to walk a bit. Very frustrating though as I could probably have done it in around 30 minutes if I'd had the extra time to improve.

Keep us posted on your training progress!

Thanks for all the positivity. Today I ran 10k, and though it was hilly, it took 61 minutes which didn't seem too bad for a first go of me and the dog pootling along with no timing (mapped out distance, just keep running till I finished)

61 minutes is a seriously fabulous time given that you say you were just pootling. Sub 60 mins is considered elite level in most running clubs.

Really? Seems like I just run at the same pace for 5k or 10k tbh - at least according to my log on MapmyRun. So slow on 5k, OK for 10k!

Good luck with your race CMOT. For your next 10k, you can find 2, 4 and 8 week training schedules online here

There's plenty more if you google 10k training plan /programme /schedule

But for your first you are doing fine if you can get round in under 60 mins.

Have you looked at the race info to see if there's a 60 min pacer?
