Winter cycling tights with a high waist - any recommendations?

I need to buy some new winter tights as my old faithful altura ones have finally worn through, so much so that my bum can be seen through the fabric! [hblush] Not the look that I am after and a bit chilly too... I tried the new version of the altura ones last year and they were dreadful - too short, horrible fabric, badly fitting and did not cover my muffin top waist so I had to return them and just use some cut-off leggings under my old tights.

Does anyone have any recommendations for warm comfy tights (with or without a pad) that cover both your midriff and your ankles to keep out the winter chills? Budgetwise, preferably cheapish so £30 or so, but I would consider paying more if they were the perfect pair. I am 5 ft 7 and size 16-18.

Many thanks!

Bump...

I know it's a very boring topic, but if anyone does have any suggestions then I would be grateful [hsmile]

The Aldi and Lidl Winter Cycling bib tights are generally really good (obviously they change each time they come in but tend to be good) and I commute in those. They have very high backs being bib's of course and you can get 2 pairs for your 30quid.

I'm not sure you'll get high backs without being bibs, I certainly don't know of any.

Aldi if there are any left. They only come out once a year and it was a coulple of weeks ago.

Argh, wrote a huge reply and then lost it when I went to get the link to the product!

I'm the same height/size as you and am in the same boat in that my beloved Altura trousers have virtually disintegrated after nearly 9 years of use. I'm getting a pair of their winter tights for my birthday so your review concerns me!!!

DH uses Ronhill tracksters over cycling shorts, would that be any use? I have some Ronhill stuff and find it a good fit as they go up to an 18. Ladies Tracksters here.

Ooh replies! Thanks so much ladies, I will check out Aldi and Ronhill.

Piffpaffpoff, the Altura ones I tried were last year's model so they might have improved the fit now. I got mine from Wiggle and there were mixed reviews on there. I might try them again and size up because what I found was that they were too tight on the thigh (no good for thunder thighs here) and too short, but a bigger size might work looking at the size chart. They just weren't the same as the old loose stirrup leggings type that I have, with the Tweedledum/dee high waist.

Ah well, maybe I'll get lucky in Aldi/Lidl Smile

LOL re the high waistedness of the old Altura leggings - I managed to wear mine til I was about 7months pregnant! Not on the bike though.

Haha, yes! I wore mine when pregnant too although the elastic got a bit tight after a while. Luckily DD was an October baby so I didn't have to wear the winter stuff when I was really big.

I have some very snuggly warm winter tights for cycling with cuffs at the ankles and come well up - they are corinne dennis and they really are comfy for me I like the material they are not to tight.

I am a 12 but as you know cycling stuff comes up small and I have a size 14.

I think I may have brought them in the spring sale at my bike shop and kept them for the next winter, as I don't remember paying 50 quid for them, but they are worth it for me.

be really really careful about going up a size in cycling cloths - I did this once and ended up chaffing, sorry but really really sore arse [shame] Buy a pair that fit snug in the bottom...

Update, got my new Altura Synergy tights today (its my birthday!!) and they feel ok. Fine for sizing, relatively high waist, very tight compared to the ancient old Cruisers but the as they are referred to as 'tights' I guess the clue is in the name! However, this is just based on mincing round the house, not been out on the bike yet, far too windy today. Will report back ASAP.

Update as I have now been out on my bike. I was concerned because walking about made me feel like they were a smidge too big and the padded bum bit felt HUGE but once on the bike they were just perfect. Perfect. I'm delighted.
