Cto5K! Oh the shame! Come and make me feel better about it....

I don't know if anyone here remembers me but I was a regular on the running threads a few years back. I got to the point of running an 11 or 12 miler at the weekends and 2 other runs of 5 or 6 miles during the week. I was so smug! Well, a combination of various things (injuries, meno, depression etc) put pay to that and I am now 2 stone heavier and with hardly a muscle to my thighs.

So I downloded the NHS Cto5K today and am starting tonight (with my also unfit and overweight eldest boy). Please tell me it works! Please tell me I'll be back to decent distances again soon. I hate feeling flabby and useless.

You've done it before so you know it works!

Nope, never done this before. When I started running in the dim and distant, I was already fit from the gym and circuit training. I've never gone from a standing start before.

It does work - well, I have to confess I never actually managed the full 5k because I can't do 5k in 30 minutes, and then when I did my 5k Race For Life last year it was hot and I came over all rubbish and walked some bits ... But, that was from a standing start, literally, I'd not run for more than about 10 seconds since being forced to run in secondary school. I'd lost a little weight when I started, and built up a bit of fitness, but not a great deal.

Good luck!

it does work!
I started with it a few years ago, couldnt run for more than 30 secs...
but you do have to keep it up- I progressed to 10 k and was then working towards 10 miles till last autumn, then weather shift work and commuting took over and I'm now struggling to do 5k again!

Try it, I think you will find it easier than you expect. I did the running club 5k program about two years ago, ran lots for six months, then got sick and I haven't run for ten months. I'm now two stone heavier and generally less fit.

Last night I decided to try running again. I intended to start at 1 min run 1 min walk but actually I felt fine and ended up running 10mins with 2 mins walk x 3.

I'm sure you will have some residual fitness and one you get out there you will enjoy it.

Thanks all.

I did it ok. Scary how hard the first minute run was though!

w2d3 complete :D DIdnt want to do it thismorning, as have a ccold starting, but got out there - had a rude awakening when I thought I was on my final walk and suddenly Laura said that it was time to run again....Eeek! But generally felt ok - a bit leaden in my legs after a 90minute walk yesterday, but soon eased off!

Hi Orm!

So glad to see you taking this step

I am on my second run of the first week - it is killing me!

Thanks shirley.

It's working quite well really. Every other time I've tried to start again I've ended up trying to go to far too fast and I got too tired. It would never have occurred to me to run such little distances. But it's perfect. DS1 is struggling a bit though - I am going to get him fit if it kills me (or him!) Grin

So which run are you on?

I managed to pull a muscle in/on my inner thigh today. Hmm. I'm staggered how crap I am.

Staggered and staggering!

What a bugger about your thigh! RICE. Rest, ice, compression and elevation.

It does work.

It can be really demoralising coming back after a period out of running. I got injured during the London Marathon last year and had to have a few weeks off running. All in all it took me the best part of six months to get back to decent mileage. I went from running 26.2 miles to barely able to run 4 or 5.

Now I've another injury and I've just done my first run for a week. Only 4 miles but injury felt ok, so hopefully I'll get back to it. Really had to force myself out though, it's amazing how quickly you get out kof the habit.

I think the first few times of getting out there are the hardest, once you get into a routine it will be easier.

Good luck!

26 miles

4 miles!

I've never been into running, have a tendancy towards shin splints, but was VERY fit a few FOUR years ago until I started working full time again. I'm three weeks into trying to get that feeling back - you know? The ILOVEIT!!! feeling about exercise? So I'm back at the gym and trying this C25K lark out as well.

I've got a long road ahead.

Will enjoy putting some frozen peas quite close to my area, and putting my feet up when I get in from work. Yes, I am doing my running in my lunch hour.

If you are running at work you can generate quite a lot of admiration by limping slightly after lunch and when people inquire saying 'Yeah, just pulled it a bit when I was starting the 6th mile. So frustrating when I wasn't even pushing myself hard'.

No-one needs to know Grin
