Brexit

Are leave voters happy with how this is playing out so far?

Inpsired by Boris Johnson’s sister’s Tweet about people saying we are where we are but nobody having a clue where that is; which group of Leave voters are happy with how things are panning out?

From what I’ve seen the Leave voters seem to fall into these categories, in no particular order:-

  1. People who heard nothing more than the word ‘immigration’ and voted based on all the borders being closed and every immigrant being deported on Friday
  2. People who believed the nonsense touted by the Leave campaign about £350m for the NHS etc
  3. People who voted as a protest to get their voice heard
  4. People who believed leaving the EU was a good thing for their own spurious reasons (to get our own back for Eurovision, to get UK tomatoes, to not have to watch the Euros football, to stop the Germans stealing our sunbeds etc) but had no idea of the other consequences
  5. People who truly believe we should not be governed by unelected bureaucrats in Brussels

Taking each group in turn, I can’t see how they have got what they want

  6. Doesn’t even merit a response as it was such an appalling reason to vote
  7. These have been proven to be lies as soon as the vote was over
  8. This was a self defeating protest as it handed the control to the very people they were protesting against
  9. Some of those people are now worried about job loses, the value of the pound, the drops in the stock market as they didn’t foresee that
  10. There is no plan to get out of the EU- Boris seems to think we can have our cake and eat it but the EU aren’t having that

Is there another group of people who are genuinely happy with the way things are shaping up?

In this situation, the response to the decision far outweighs the negative impact of the actual decision itself.

What peppatax said.

What does that mean?

To me, there is no response ie Article 50 hasn't been invoked, no one has a plan of what to do- how can that outweigh the decision itself?

Nope. I'm appalled at how it's playing out and ashamed to have been part of it.

The current clusterfuck is largely down to govt mishandling and shock to the markets because they had bet on a remain vote

The govt ought to have had a clear plan for both outcomes, that's what we pay them for, to manage the country

Imagine this scenario:

  1. 'Leave' wins
  2. DC decides best thing to do to provide country with stability and a smooth transition to Brexit rather than trying to set up BoJo for a fall
  3. People accept democratic vote results and do not behave like total twats on social media
  4. People accept democratic vote results and do not behave like total twats in areas all over the country
  5. Labour MPs rally behind JC to hold Government to account in getting best deal for Brexit
  6. Scotland announces a pledge of unity with rest of GB accepting democratic vote rather than making another attempt to divide the country
  7. EU doesn't see GB behaving like total loons and the uses it as tool for leveraging a quick Brexit where GB likely not to get best deal as no leadership, they discuss with current stable Government best options for Brexit
  8. Rest of world don't yank their cash out of the UK so pound and stocks are not volatile which continues investment for foreseeable future until Brexit actually happens

Quite a different story now isn't it?

Leave ought to have had a plan. I think that Remain (who made the rules) were so scared by the fact that their plan would have been same old, same old, that they didn't want any manifestos. What a hideous mistake they made.

But Peppatax, isn't that all a bit like an economist saying 'my model works beautifully, so long as we assume people aren't actually people'?
7 and 8 in particular were never going to happen...

Report
peppatax · 28/06/2016 11:18

Of course 7 & 8 were always going to happen but would have had far less impact had 1-6 wasn't quite such a mess!

Unfortunately Pepptax that scenario is as much of a dream and fantasy and those who voted Leave to get more jobs, social housing and to deport every forriner who lives in the UK.

Sounds of chickens coming home to roost everywhere led by Turkey BOJO and permatanned squawker Nigel

Bearbehind I fall into your category 5, and no I'm not particularly happy right now. But I hope you're not suggesting that had the vote been 52% in favour of staying, that everyone who voted Leave would have just said, oh well, never mind, the problems will just go away now. And glassgarden is right that this has been mishandled, by lots of people, and we should ALL be demanding they go out and start earning their money.

angemorange I don't think it's fair to say it's a dream and a fantasy - how many of us quit our jobs because we don't like how a decision has gone/don't like our boss/want to do less work for more money?

I think it's obvious that some Leavers are going to be unhappy, because their aims are not the same.

If you voted Leave for issues of sovereignty, you may be happy with any deal that gets you that.

But if you voted for Leave to reduce EU immigration, you will be unhappy with a trade deal that includes freedom of movement.

Similarly, if you voted Leave so that we no longer send them funds, you'll be unhappy if the trade deals include payment of the same amount.

It was always going to be a no win situation.

I just hope that it will be a catalyst for change in the UK and across the EU and that something better will emerge to fill the vacuum.

At least it has shown what a shower of shite our 'leaders' are, across the board.

Meanwhile, for the majority of people - life goes on pretty much as before. (and before anyone jumps on me with tales of woe, I said the majority of people)

I don't think that anyone expects politicians to have a strop because they don't get their own way ALL AT THE SAME TIME. The way the whole thing has been handled is a complete joke. All I'm saying is that any of the factors above being not quite so extreme would reduce the mess we now find ourselves in.

I would be a lot happier if the remain voters had accepted that the majority of those votes cast were in favour of leaving, and they now stopped throwing shit around, and the whole country worked as a team to move forward based on the referendum result.

Yes, I agree it is a bit shocking that there are no actual plans in place. You give a nation a 2 option referendum, you would not think it beyond the wit of the government to have 2 potential plans in place to meet either outcome, but hey ho.

I don't believe for a second that Osborne didn't have a Plan B actually. I believe that Boris perhaps didn't, or not a coherent one, and that the Tories are allowing just enough time for him to make himself look a complete arse and discredit himself as a potential leader, before Theresa May steps in and steadies the ship.

I just wish the fucking Labour Party would get their act together. This should be an open goal for them ffs and they are just as divided as the Tories.

But electricfly, how do we work together as a team to move forward? What can we do? We're just basically sitting and waiting to see what the politicians do.

Lol at the understatement of the year- a bit shocking Grin

Peppatax, that was my point, your scenario is very different but it is not what has, or was ever likely to happen.

It just seems to me that these 5 groups of people had their own reasons for voting Leave, but none of them were actually ever on offer, so add that to the Remain supporters who never wanted it to happen- who is actually happy with where we are?

'I would be a lot happier if the remain voters had accepted that the majority of those votes cast were in favour of leaving, and they now stopped throwing shit around, and the whole country worked as a team to move forward based on the referendum result.'

This is the kind of empty headed thinking that baffles me. The country is more or less split down the middle on the most momentous political decision in a generation and all we hear is 'but why can't everyone just do what we tell them?'. Move forward on the plans that haven't even been made? Move forward on the tanking economy? NO.

Well no-one but I don't think that it's right to say that it couldn't have been okay. I fall into your missing 6th category - people that wanted the country to change and knew that a leave vote was the only way. Not a protest vote, just a genuine hope that the country was strong enough to ride out of the storm into a better future
