Why does Scotland want to stay in the EU?

Because it's good for them and they recognise that. Staying in the EU was a major reason the Scots voted to stay in the Union.

Because although they want to isolate themselves from the rest of the UK, they don't want to isolate themselves from the rest of the world. They know that financially there are loads of benefits. Historically a lot of Scots have had to leave for jobs or adventure - they like the idea of having 27 countries that they can live in without a problem. Also they realise that they want a strong Europe because of Putin.

Because although they want to isolate themselves from the rest of the UK, - but we don't. The 55%. Believe it or not we are just nice chaps that know English people and Polish people are our brothers and sisters. Everything else is a line on a map, but people the majority of the world over are good.

Edinburgh is the UKs largest financial centre outside London. Leaving the EU risks loss of banking jobs which would be a serious hit for the economy.

Deprived areas of Scotland have benefitted from EU funding.

Scotland seems to be in favour of a broadly more left wing government- happy to be taxed for free higher education, more money into the NHS whereas England keeps electing the Conservatives. I imagine they feel they have more in common with Europe than England.

Also it wasn't all of Scotland and Scotland is likely to have to reapply for EU membership if it became independent and probably wouldn't get in. And then it would be cut off from the uk and from the EU and that would be much more stable

Because we would like the opportunity of retiring elsewhere when our day comes.
We enjoy many public investments generated by the EU.
We want ease of access to the STEM industry supported by the EU.
We want to work for multinational companies who have bases here due to the tax breaks afforded to them by being part of the EU.

1/3 of Scotland didn't bother to vote. 1.6 mill voted to remain (same number who voted for leaving UK) 1.1 mill voted to leave. Only 500k more people voted to remain than leave EU. Not the enormous majority that the media and SNP keep stating. Nearly 40% voted to leave EU. Sturgeon does not speak for Scotland.

As a scot I see both the benefits of the EU and what having a Tory government imposed on us has done to us.
Without the EU forcing that Tory government to abide by its rules, I worry about where we'll end up.

500k might not sound much when you compare it to the difference in the main vote - but it is 10% of our entire population, so it's not insignificant.

1 million is 1.5% of the population of the UK.

The majority in Scotland was significant (24% differential).

This difference of opinion re the EU allows Scotland to hold another referendum re separation from UK. Scotland's history shows trade and political ties with France, Portugal, Baltic countries etc.

We toured the North of Scotland not long ago.
A lot of The road improvements came from EU sponsorship.
As did community halls.
And a lot of LGBTQ i information services are EU funded.
As are some youth groups.

STEM EU sponsored initiatives.

Personally I like going on holiday without filling in visas or having to prove income/ funding. ( had to fill out frms and show we had yen and credit cards when we went to Japan recently, also finger prints and so on )

It doesn't help that there is a Tory leadership in Westminster. The majority of Scots hate the Tories. So the idea that they are being lead in a direction they don't want by a Tory government is abhorrent to them.
The problems I see are firstly not all people who voted remain will vote out in an independence referendum, many voted for the status quo and are the more 'conservative voters' as one person told me she thought 'better the devil you know' and would never vote for independence.
The other thing NS made a big play of is that Scotland send 40% of their exports to the EU but of course our biggest market by far is the rest of the UK where we send 4 times as much as we do to the EU. and that doesn't count half our oil and gas which is bought by England. How would that work with regard to tariffs etc.! Why on earth would the UK give Scotland a free trade deal!

I'm Scottish - Glasgow born and bred.

I voted to remain part of the U.K. and I voted to remain in the EU.

Now I have the dilemma of what to vote in the event of another Indyref.

However, it's not really a dilemma. I'll vote to remain part of the U.K and I really don't see that changing.

There's no way Scotland wants to feel the tender embrace of the Germans around our welfare system lol. It's not working out too well for the Greeks, is it?

Also, for me it's very simple. I like the UK. whilst we have our differences as countries we just need to celebrate them.

If Scotland votes to leave it will be such a mass for England trying to hash out an EU deal and untangle from Scotland as well.

Sturgeon and her cronies - SNP and Scottish Conservatives- want to remain in the EU because of the huge amounts of money Scotland receives from the EU- such as social regeneration money, farmng and land subsidies. Scotland has no hope of independence without it beng floated by the EU. It would sink if it was left to support itself.

As for Nicola Sturgeon. She will always be hated by the unionists (And other groups of SNP haters). I'm dreading visiting the inlaws this week as I know they will somehow find a way to blame her for everything has happened since the results were announced.

She is the only leader in the UK that has been doing her job since the shit hit the fan on Friday. The rest have been resigning, hiding, posting selfies from Glastonbury, retracting promises and generally flapping.

I don't actually think Nicola sturgeon wants another inde ref at this point but it might come to it. If you listen carefully to her interviews - the entire interview and not just the little snippets cut to make her sound like all she wants is Indy ref 2 - you will see she always mentions negotiating with the EU to stay with independence as a option but not the only option.

The ideal position for Scotland would be to remain in both the UK and the EU in the short term. We would then become the centre for business and trade due to being part of the EU when the rest of the UK is not (not quite on the scale of London but bigger and stronger than we currently are) That in turn would put Scotland in a much stronger position for independence in the future - say in 10 years time.
