Brexit

If you're Welsh and voted Leave, Why?

I was really surprised by the Welsh vote, Wales has really benefited from being in the European Union e.g

Swansea University's new Bay Campus was only possible because of the £40 Million from the European Structural Funds which came from a finance package of £60 million from the European Investment Bank.

The National Waterfront Museum, which includes a gallery, exhibition and library, benefited from £3.7m of EU funds when it was constructed.

5.8m of EU funds was made available for Quadrant Intermodal Transport Centre, led by the City & County of Swansea, which replaced the outdated and rundown bus station.

£9.6m EU funds were invested as part of Neath Port Talbot Regeneration project which included schemes to help make improvements in and around the town centres as well as a purpose built Community Enterprise Centre.

  1. When you voted did you not care/consider about the financial benefits Wales receives from the EU?

  1. Do you think Westminister (that only cares about London/SE) will honestly make up the funds instead?

  1. Was it really immigration and if so why? Was it fear of job loss/overcrowding or was it the refugee issue on the mainland. Do you really believe immigration can be capped/slowed down just because we're leaving the EU?

  1. The EU army is not a legitimate answer, it doesn't exist & it never will!

  1. Are you worried at all? This doesn't mean you regret your choice but are you worried about the economy or the possible breakup of Great Britian? Did you expect that Scotland/N.Ireland might leave because of the vote?

I'm Welsh, living now in a Schengen country and I voted by post to remain. For all the reasons you gave above and for the improvements in my particular town.

I left at 18 for university in England in 1989.

I remember the funding projects starting then. I think if I recall there was almost a third world status on some parts of Wales when reviewed.

There certainly wasn't any interest in developing Wales from England.

You wouldn't recognise my town now as it was when I left.

I am thoroughly ashamed as I think this vote came from xenophobia. Particularly disappointing as my part of Wales had a strong history of links with Italy and the Welsh Italian culture was strong and nicely integrated.

I wonder how much confidence Aston Martin have in moving to Wales now.

The Waterfront museum is shite and I'm not a racist either.

The Italians came to Wales well before the EU was founded.

I'm Welsh and voted remain. I know a few people who voted leave. They are all from deprived towns in the valleys and voted leave because of immigration.

Report
Ineedmorelemonpledge · 25/06/2016 16:00

Yes they did and I didn't connect the two together, Troysmammy

I just pointed out my surprise at the xenophobic reactions to immigrants based on my local history of integration.

Let's not forget the Wales Coastal Path was also funded by EU money, as well as the Wetland Protection places along the coast.

Preservation of the environment was a really beneficial development from the EU.

Dont get me wrong, most are the 'nicer' kind of racist - the ones who'll point out someones skin colour in a story when it isnt relevant - but many said we are being swamped by the schrodingers illegal immigrants...

Sadly I know exactly what you mean.

Same people who'll be cheering on Gareth Bale today, who learnt everything from La Liga and Madrid, whilst living in Spain and moving freely across Europe.

I'm sure he'll learn a lot from Bala FC when he comes back though. WinkGrinGrinGrin

Okay, I´ll be fair(which Brexit bastards never are)-it´s half of Wales who are my friend, the other half my enemy. It´s the same in Essex where I´m from.
Ask me if I know Clacton - full of shitty cut-throat chavs

I'm not Welsh, not working class, and I have no firm views on the EU, so I don't really know but I guess if you're a builder in Blaenau Gwent who keeps losing business to EU immigrants who can do it cheaply because they live three-strong in caravans, you don't give a hoot about wetlands or museums. I know Wales quite well. It's obvious why Cardiff residents are perfectly content and voted remain -but other parts of Wales are so very different to this vibrant city with its high employment and pockets of expensive housing.

I'm Welsh and neither racist not stupid. I voted leave because Merthyr has the highest levels of immigration in Wales and second highest in the uk. The town was shit to start with, now with all the extra people and no extra services it's even worse.

The eu refurbishing the old town hall and providing a new road system around the town doesn't make up for that.

Report
Cjamm · 25/06/2016 16:44

Pickled, but surely none of that will change? Immigration & lack of services was always a Goverment issue. By the sounds of it now Freedom of movement isn't up for debate any new deal with the EU will include it.

So now levels of immigration will continue, no extra services will be coming from Westminister & now you won't even be able to get a new town hall or some decent roads Confused

So the main issue seems to be immigration, do you guys honestly believe that will decrease? I personally think it'll increase now.

I live in a rural area, and voted remain.

People I know who voted out did so because, frankly, they're a bit think/misinformed/quietly racist.

Eg nurse friend thought the EU wanted to privatise the NHS facepalm
DF voted out because of casual / anti 'forrin' people feelings, and some notion that the EU controlling everything.
DM (who's job was EU funded for 10 years!) didn't seem to have a reason other apart from some idiotic notion that Britain once great, and will be again now we've left the EU.

I despair.

The waterfront museum is shit though.

Pickledpears - I'm from Merthyr, live in the South east now but go back often. Merthyr is shit in large part due to a huge percentage of the indigenous population who can't be arsed to work & live off benefits. Generations of them, welfare capital of the universe. And then they complain that the relatively few immigrants take the jobs they won't do. Tell me you don't recognise that description.

Report
thatstoast · 25/06/2016 17:07

Despite the fact that we have seen a large percentage increase in immigrants, 98% of people in the Merthyr area are British. European funding has provided regeneration of the town centre and numerous projects that benefit the people of the town. I voted in my local community centre which will probably close now as it had funding from the european social fund. My job prospects are now limited as I work for one of the aforementioned projects.

Report
greenlavender · 25/06/2016 17:16

thatstoast -completely agree. Everything looks so much better around the place. I hope you'll be ok.

Report
pickledpears · 25/06/2016 17:19

Green I agree, it's a fact Merthyr is one of the benefit capitals. Generations of uneducated people who have never worked and the cycle continues. I'm not arguing that fact at all. I do disagree with the relatively few comment though, as I said earlier Merthyr has the fastest level of immigration rise in Wales.

There are plenty of people here that do want to work though and those that don't have been pushed back into work (rightly so) by the benefit system cuts.

Employers are taking advantage of immigrants who will work for less money and in poorer conditions. You only need to look at the meat factory to see that.

It's the conservatives who ruined this town and they are still doing it. Margaret thatcher signing people onto the sick for life to show unemployment levels have dropped and selling off social housing.

I voted leave because things can't get worse for Merthyr than they already are.

As for the EU funding, doing up buildings and updating the road system doesn't provide jobs, doctors, school places or houses.

Oh and I agree the town looks much better thanks to the eu funding but that funding was only guaranteed until 2020 when it would be reviewed against other countries within the eu some who are much poorer.

For me it wasn't a good enough reason to remain.

Merthyr will get nothing from Westminster. It was Thatcher who threw us on the scrap heap all those years ago.

Flintshire has 4000 jobs dependent on Airbus (French and German owned) and voted leave.
