Article 50 will never be invoked now, will it?

Talk about a poisoned chalice for the new leader.

I voted leave. I am very annoyed Cameron reneged on his promise to invoke it ASAP.

It's not going to happen.

What makes you think that? David Cameron is making way for a leader who can put this into motion with integrity.

I don't see why not, but it's pragmatic to delay & determine a strategy first before starting withdrawal agreement negotiations..

Whats it got to do with DC?

The leave campaigns Gove et all say they wanted an hand-break take it slowly approach - they said this up front -this is what you voted for...

What did you think Cameron would do? It is completely against his beliefs to leave the EU. I'm sure all leave-ers will be happier if it's done by someone who supports the idea...

They need to vote in a new leader first - one prepared to take this on. This was all predicted.

'Article 50 will never be invoked now, will it? '

It will because even though Cameron and Boris seem to want to delay it, the EU is playing hardball. They are angry and are saying it has to be done quickly. They are not interested in letting Cameron sort out divisions in the Tory party by delaying and increasing uncertainty over the future.

'Can the EU force it to be invoked?'

Not sure, but I think the 27 countries now hold the aces.

They interviewed some EU types on the BBC today and one of them was angry at Cameron and didn't seem to be in any mood to delay Article 50 in order to accommodate him.

Given that Boris described serving the Article 50 notice immediately as a scorched earth strategy designed to make a peaceful Brexit impossible, I think everyone no matter what your vote should be pleased there is an extra 5 months to start settlement negotiations before pushing the button.

Shame we don't have anyone with the authority to have those negotiations tho.

Yes it can and will be invoked.
We told the EU we wanted a divorce and the rest will be a bit of interesting history.
Yesterday's vote was not a tiff or a toys out of the pram moment, it was real and has had real world wide effects. Do we really have a country full of fucking numpties who did not realise this?

I don't think Cameron will get time or get his way. Based on how the EU outnegotiated him and his team last time, my guess is that he will have to do what they say.

"Brussels chiefs today ordered Britain to get a move on after the country voted to leave the European Union in an historic referendum.

EU leaders said they wanted Britain’s exit to start ““immediately” on a day the shock Brexit vote sparked political and financial turmoil across the world.

European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker said he wanted to see a quick withdrawal.

He told Germany’s ARD television station: “Britons decided yesterday that they want to leave the European Union, so it doesn't make any sense to wait until October to try to negotiate the terms of their departure.

“I would like to get started immediately.”

invoking article 50 is a formal process and can only happen at certain eu meetings. the next such meeting is in 10 days time (or there abouts)

Article 50 can only be declared by the leaving country - we voted out to avoid being bullied by the EU, why would we negotiate to their timetable?

"Today is a blow for Europe. It is a blow for the process of European unification. What the consequences of this blow will be in the next days, weeks, months and years, is entirely dependent on whether we, the other 27 members of the European Union, will show ourselves willing and able not to jump to conclusions in this situation, and not to draw instant and simple conclusions from the referendum in Great Britain, which would only divide Europe further,” the Chancellor (Merkel) said."

Her voice will prevail over Juncker/Shultz intemperate comments of today.

'we voted out to avoid being bullied by the EU, why would we negotiate to their timetable?'

My guess is that Cameron will have no choice just as he didn't have much choice when he "negotiated" with them for the "reformed EU" he offered the people.

I think it's the Lisbon Treaty which lays out the current iteration of exit procedures. And it's totally up to the exiting state to start the formal countdown.

So no, the EU elite cannot insist on their timetable. Especially if UK decides it's in their interest to negotiate with EEA and EFTA first.

our only hope now is that we never quite get round to invoking article 50. it could happen ...
