He was an arse to make that comment. Very risky, and a sticky wicket. He would have been well advised to leave it well alone.

May have handed a coup to Brexit, which had struggled to distance itself from Farage's poster twattery.

Hasn't he got a point? Won't most racists be drawn to the idea of Leave rather than Remain? As he says, that doesn't mean that all Brexiters are racist - I don't understand the controversy.

Although xenophobe would be technically more correct than racist.

I watched that and agree with him. Most racists will vote for out.

What are you pretending to be "stunned" about?

Can I call him an uninformed bigot?

It was obviously awful. That's why it is trending.Wink
If you read Private Eye it reminded me of that cartoon "ITS GRIM UP NORTH LONDON"
Though it actually did make me cringe.

SpringingIntoAction, I would presume Dreda would agree.

Straw should realise that when you resort to smearing your opponents you have lost the battle.

He is just trying to make Leave seen toxic so people don't vote for them. It is a very dangerous tactic for social cohesion and quite shameful.

Just a 'dead cat'. Best ignored

To be fair leave are doing are good job of that all by themselves.

slurs on character shouldn't come into it, trying to shame people into voting remain isn't a reasoned argument, and there are plenty of good reasons to remain.

I keep hearing this and wonder how people can keep saying it.

The EU is seen as a white fortress, designed to keep people of different nations OUT. !!!!!

White immigration only.

Black author ROCKING IT FOR LEAVE on chanel 4 debate right now ROCKING IT. Labour voter, in despair at what she has seen and heard in her community.

nd there are plenty of good reasons to remain.

There really are not. Hence the smearing, spinning and Project Fear.

If there was a compelling reason to stay we would all be rushing out to Remain - there isn't.

I refuse to be intimidated from voting in what I believe in.

And by intimidated, I mean being called racist and thick.

My vote has nothing to do with immegration. Or any of the "names" supporting leave. Or a lot of other things.

I don't think it's racist to vote out but voting out is likely to increase racism.

Its also likely to increase anti-english sentiment in the rest of the UK, Europe and beyond

When he was allowed to finish the sentence he said along the lines of "I'm not saying that ALL brexitera are racists, I'm just pointing out who your bedfellows will be"

Voting remain will sadly probably increase racism too.

A friend just called in who would have an Indian background as does her husband. I asked her what she was voting and she laughed and said Leave. I showed her this video and she rolled her eyes and said more or less the same had happened to her at work. She also wants restrictions on immigration and cannot understand why people here "don't appreciate what they have and want to protect it.". I have asked her to join mumsnet to take part in this. (Incidentally, we worked together collecting for refugees a few months ago.)

I am voting leave as are many people I know and none of us are even remotely racist or xenophobic. We just want immigration to be controlled, so that it doesn't put a massive strain on the NHS, on schools, on housing, on transport, on our infrastructure in general. We also want democracy. For Will Self to suggest a link between racism and wanting to escape the EU, is just plain bigotry.

Will Self is a perfect example of a sneering champagne socialist. Just the sort of person that will vote remain!

Report

Also when Selina Scott was speaking about animal welfare and EU red tape, the camera cut to the audience and I saw the 'comedienne' Katy Brand (on the Remain side) with a massive condescending smirk on her face. After tonight I am very happy with my vote to Leave.
