'France shuns Europe as Brexit revolt spreads
...
France has turned even more viscerally eurosceptic than Britain over recent months, profoundly altering the political geography of Europe and making it impossible to judge how Paris might respond to Brexit.

An intractable economic crisis has been eating away at the legitimacy of the French governing elites for much of this decade. This has now combined with a collapse in the credibility of the government, and mounting anger over immigration.

A pan-European survey by the Pew Research Center released today found that 61pc of French voters have an “unfavourable” view, compared to 48pc in the UK.
...
“It is a protest against the elites,” said Professor Brigitte Granville, a French economist at Queen Mary University of London. “There are 5000 people in charge of everything in France. They are all linked by school and marriage, and they are tight.”
...
“The EU policy elites are in panic. If the British vote to leave the shock will be so ghastly that they will finally wake up and realize that they can no longer ignore demands for democratic reform,” he said.

“They may have to dissolve the EU as it is and try to reinvent it, both in order to bring the Brits back and because they fear that the whole political order will be swept away unless they do,” he said."

Utter panic. The revolr of the people against the crooked elites is spreading everywhere, including America.

'they fear that the whole political order will be swept away unless they do'

Can they stop it? Will they ask Cameron to help them by telling them not to be "quitters and to fight for their values"?

If we vote to leave, the French socialist political class will be finished and so will be our entire bunch of servants in the Green party, Labour party and Tory Remainers. An earthquake is nothing on the political shakeip that will result as the people lose trust in the servants of the elite.

Haven't been on this topic much. Grin A bit boring, everyone already knows what to do and which way to vote. The Etablishment are wheeling out their servants and the people are ignoring them and are putting Brexit ahead in the polls.

I read Westminster plan to find ways out of leaving the EU. I am shocked so many want to leave.

I am listening to Trump live making a speech. Truly stunning and explains what is happening in Europe and with Brexit and with France next. Trumps says the system is rigged and the election in the US is about who runs the country, the special interests or the people, the American people.

It is the same here. the elites, the special interests are in a battle against the people over Brexit and next it will be France.

“We are in a very dangerous phase. The French elites are extremely scared of what could happen in France if there is a Brexit,” she said.

The revolt comes comes as Paris battles a wave of protest against labour reform, a push that has come close to rupturing the Socialist Party. The measures were rammed through by decree to avoid a vote."

The crooked elites are on the way out. Trump is teh harbinger and what happens in America will happen here. Brexit is just the first brick out of the wall. Even if we lose, the EU is mortally wounded as the people have stood up and said no, and it won't be able to survive what then happens in France.

This bunch of crooked elites may be out, to be replaced by other crooked elites. I don't understand your Trump love.

"Mr Merritt said it is an error to suppose that the EU would carry on as a monolithic bloc able to dictate terms after a Brexit vote. “The British would have pricked the bubble. The Germans are deeply alarmed at how suddenly the mood is shifting everywhere,” he said."

Oh cripes claig. Don't start connecting Brexit with that vile Trump person. Farage/Brexit conflation is bad enough.

No, we have to always remain positive and hopeful. What comes next will be better than what was. Trump is the force that will end the elite crookedness, he is terrifying them in America and all across the world.

"The Germans are deeply alarmed at how suddenly the mood is shifting everywhere,” he said."

It is a global revolution, the people are democratically defeating the elites and something better will come of it. More democracy, more accountability and less crookedness, lies and spin.

We are living in historic times.

Trump is terrifying because he's a sociopath.

I agree historical times indeed.

howtorebuild, you should know from listening to the BBC and our media over Brexit that they scaremonger and lie because they are scared of how the people will vote and they have to serve their masters. They fear Trump even more, so they fearmonger even more. But none of it is true.

Yes that was the Channel 4 Matt Frei documentary. That came up during her divorce but she later said it was not true.

Interesting to hear that in France there is so much discontent with the EU. Seems it's not just Madame "Frexit" Le Pen, any more than our referendum is only Farage.

It is interesting but not surprising is it after the Bataclan attacks.

Holland made the grave announcement " our borders are closed" at the very time the attackers were flitting through and back and froth to Brussels.

You might learn a bit more about French politics by reading the French press rather than the Daily Telegraph ...

There is some interesting, and rather dishonest, snipping in Claig's OP which makes it read as if all the quotes are from one person, which they are not, unless Brigitte has had a sex change.

There were plenty of anti EU posters in the North of Paris when I was last there. However I have always understood the French to be a bit more pro EU. The borders there make it such anyway.
France does seem to be run by a small number of elites - certainly politics and the tc feels less diverse.
I love that the French don't put up with much BS and are not adverse to a good demonstration.
