12 million Turks say they'll come to the UK

A survey conducted across all Turkish regions says that 16% (12 million) of the population say they want to come to the UK when the nation joins the EU. With membership talks set to start again in June should the UK be worried & will this influence your vote in the EU referendum

'Want to come ' does not mean 'will come'.

I want to go on holiday to the Caribbean. And if you asked me in a survey did I want to go on holiday to the Caribbean I'd say yes. But I'll never go. It's not something I plan on doing.

So basically the wording of the survey and who they selected and how it was conducted are all important. And without knowing all that we can draw no conclusions about what Turkish people plan on doing.

Nor do we know how many people plan oncoming if Turkey doesn't join the EU.

They're coming! The marauding hordes! Flee!

You must live in a constant state of panic.

Having said that, it does anger me that Turkey should even be considered for EU membership given the government's appalling disregard for human rights.

I'm utterly sickened by the vote leave poster I saw last night. Racist, xenophobic, out right lies, designed to appeal to the lowest denominator. They should be ashamed.
I feel like I should apologise to my Turkish friends on behalf of the UK. It makes me ashamed to be British.

Turkey's membership of the EU is light years away. And we're not going to drop our visa regime any time soon. Do calm down dear.

If my dream island had a really good benefits system, would provide housing and a great national health system then I would give it a go. It's very scary!

Just smacks of racism to me. Iceland is at a similar stage of joining the EU, but you don't hear panic alarums that they're all going to come here Shock Shock Shock. Maybe because they're whiter of skin than Turkish people Hmm.

'Want to come ' does not mean 'will come'.

I want to go on holiday to the Caribbean. And if you asked me in a survey did I want to go on holiday to the Caribbean I'd say yes. But I'll never go. It's not something I plan on doing.

That's because you can't afford to go to the Caribbean because when you arrive there with your six children no-one will pay to feed or house you for as long as you want to stay.

Want to come doesn't necessarily mean 'will come' but it probably means 'will try to come' if the conditions are right. Even if only 10% of that 12million manage it, the majority of them will be poorly skilled low income workers and with the birth rate among Turks currently at around 16 births per thousand of population compared to our 4.7 per thousand, (which is massively up from 2004 as a result of recent immigration anyway) that still represents a bit of a fucking problem. Turkey is a country with virtually no benefits system and you still see severely disabled and poverty stricken people and children scratching out a meagre living by selling trays of plastic combs on the streets to get by. You think they aren't motivated to try to come? Of course they are.

I am also angered that Turkey are being considered for inclusion into the EU, mainly because they aren't actually in fricking Europe. Hmm

If Turkey was a human being and their body represented Europe and Asia, the bit that would be Europe would be about the size of one hand and half a lower arm. It's a joke.

There are only 300,000 Icelandics Alltheprettyseahorses they could all come tomorrow and we'd barely notice.

Not that they will, they have no need to, no motivation, there's no huge benefit to them. That's the difference.

Hang on, are Turkey in the EU? Shock

Oh no, they're not. And they're not going to join any time soon. But let's whip up a bit of xenophobia on a dreary Sunday

I know, MardleBum - bit of rhetoric - but I do think skin colour has a lot to do with it, as well as pernicious attitudes towards Slavic and related countries. There's no outcry about 20k immigrants from America or 33k from Spain, for example.

For all those saying Turkey will never join the EU membership talks are starting again in June just after the EU vote & we were told by the government every time a new nation joined that we would not have an influx & everytime we did. We were told only 15,000 Poles would come it is almost 1 million, we were told Romanian immigration would be low & it wasn't. Don't fall for the lie again. Turkey will join (Germany support it) & we will have another massive influx

It seems as though the leave campaign have dusted off the tory playbook from the as Smethwick election in 1964: if you want a Turk for a neighbour view remain.

It's just racist

It's not racist to want to have some control over our immigration. Racist is a lazy word to use in this context.

Turkey's not some tin-pot republic, it has the world's 18th largest economy that's growing at a faster rate than ours.

BUT there are huge hurdles for them to over come, in terms of human rights etc, before they'd be allowed to join. If they can reform (and get rid erdogan) then I'd welcome their membership.

Report
Palehorse · 22/05/2016 07:42

It is racist to imply that there's a horde of 'muslamic' scroungers waiting to pour over our borders the morning after the referendum. The tone of the leave campaign has become racist.

Pale I find this lofty 'it's just racist' retort as a response to every concern about immigration so lazy, so offensive, so patronising and dismissive, so naive and so fucking arrogant.

People like you seem to think that by implying that others who disagree with you are both racist and a little bit stupid they can win every political argument game set and match.

It's not so much to do with it being a Muslim country (although the border with Syria thing is a bit unknown) it's because it's yet another, poorer country whose residents will of course want to migrate to countries with better prospects. There are something like 7 more countries queuing up to join the EU, - Serbia, Macedonia, Montenegro etc - which will pile huge pressure on immigration.
