Sorry to bother, but does anyone know what the legal ins and outs of this are? I am rather worried about the financial implications of this for us...

DP works for NHS on permanent contract. Handed in notice as job too far to commute to. Then slipped disc the next day and has been off sick for the last three weeks, likely to continue as may need an operation.

Does his current employer have to cover sick pay after his 3 months notice have run out or is that, sorry, bad timing, you are out on your ear??

To complicate matters further, he has a 6 month locum job starting at the end of his notice period. They offered him the job knowing he was on sick at the mo. Do they still have to employ him??

Thank you!!

There's no reason for his current employer to pay him sick pay once his employment has ended, no. He should check his sick pay policy anyway to make sure there is nothing excluding employees working their notice from sick pay.

With his new employer, if they offered him the job knowing he was on long-term sick leave with a slipped disc, why are you thinking they might try and withdraw the offer? If they do it could technically be breach of contract, but I think it's unlikely to happen. Assuming he is likely to make a full recovery I imagine it won't be a problem.

They might delay the start date if they thought he would be available on x date and in fact he isn't.
