What are the consequences of going to work when your doctor has signed you off?

Mums doc has signed her off for a week.
Mum wont listen, says she is going to work on Fri (day off tomorrow)
I'm sure that its illegal to go to work when you have a sick note unless you have got a fit to work certificate.
Am I wrong / right?

Most employers won't allow staff to work when they're signed off, as it would invalidate their employers liability insurance, I believe.

But it does depend whether she's told them about the sick note in the first place.........

It's not illegal, but if her employer allows her to do so they are very daft.

Why is she so desparate to go in, does she not get paid if she's off sick?

I accidently found out when I went back to work when pg, I got signed off with blood pressure and went in to work for an hour or so a day to tidy things up, was only after I was on maternity leave that somebody else pointed out it was not allowed

H&S bods will look on it very poorly. We have a strict return to work system as my place handles food. If you are sick you can't get near the place!

no she gets paid. nobody covers her job when she is off, so she goes back to a load of crap.
Doc has signed her off saying that her body is telling her she needs a break, and she is reluctant to take the time off.

Just spoke to doc 2day about this. It varies from company to company, you can go back to work b4 sick note has ended if u feel well, but u are usually required by company to be signed fit to work by doc - for insurance purposes.It all depends on individual company rules.

What Flowery said but, as others have commented, it depends whether she has told them. If they don't know she's signed off, they'll quite reasonably assume she's better.

I tried this once and got sent home because I wasn't covered on the company insurance.
