Any journos out there?

I a m trying to get freelance work. I have no formal training but am an English grad so can string a sentence together! I HAVE written for various women's mags etc- on the basis of free publicity for me and what I do- parenting and family coaching/mediating. So - lots of free stuff for them and some publicity for me- but now i want paying for my writing!

Am I being unrealistic? I do know of someone else like me who seems to have made a success of this- but it all seems to be down to contacts.

It is very difficult and you need to be persistent I think.

Generally many of them like you to come up with articles on spec and then you have to hawk them around to see if there are interested buyers. I've only done national newspapers and websites but a friend used to do lots of women's mags. However, she found it VERY time consuming to get stories and they weren't always bought.

I think it's very difficult for such a general subject which probably quite a few people are suitably 'qualified' to write about i.e. parenting.

I do some freelance writing BUT it is in a highly specialised area for which there are probably only a handful of people with the right knowledge/ expertise.

Good luck though - keep trying!
