Work

Do you bring work home to do in the evening?

And if so, how do you manage it?

I often think I should bring stuff home - am so busy at work at the moment, but the idea of sitting down to work at 8.30 or 9 at night is depressing. I'm pretty much busy until then.

Do you do it whilst the kids are doing their homework?

Do you plan during the day what you're going to bring home or does it just sort of happen?

yes I bring stuff home. I tend to do it after dinner - maybe about 9.30-10.00 until whenever. I'm quite a nightowl and often work late. sometimes, to be sociable, I do something mindless - like clearing out my emails while wataching tv/chatting to dh. - thus clearing up more space for the next day

Depends onthe age of the children. NOw they are a bit older I can sometimes work when they are around.
The worst time was when I got up at 5am on Saturday to do 2 hours work before they woke. I didn't like that much but it was necessary at the time.

Same as MinkVelvet, cept I work FT, and get up at 6 every morning to work too.
Agree, it's crap.

no, never have (ok - very very occasionally I have, but on most of those occasions I take it back in the next day unlooked at), hopefully never will.
Neither does dh really, maybe once every couple of months.

It can very much depend on what sort of workspace you have at home - what do you have? What scope do you have to make whatever there is ergodynamic & appealingly efficient?

My desk at home is far too small to spread out my papers the way I can at work (and there's no alternative in our flat), so I end up hunched over the kitchen table which = depressing. Which is sad as when conditions are right (which for me specifically means space conditions) powering through work is fun.

If you can get over the hump of sitting down to start it, actually doing it is not too bad.

I teach so have to bring work home in the evenings, I hate it and it is one of the reasons I am looking for work in a different school.

I tend to get into work early as I can get a lot done there so get in about six/ six thirty and get two hours done before the working day. Around report writing time I will have one or two mornings where I start at 5am.

If I have childcare problems I work from home in the morning. I try and plan to get stuff done in the day but becasue of my position and the nature of the school I rarely manage to avoid being called to sort out a situation.

I try and work late at school to avoid bringing stuff home, once a weel I work until nine in the evening in school and then usually I don't have to bring stuff home. Otherwise I stay in school until about six or seven so I can be home to see dd for an hour. By the time I am free then it is about 9 - 9.30 and I then work until about midnight.

The workload is one of the reasons I would try and putt dd off becoming a teacher, certainly if she wanted a family.

yes and used to work in the day and then from 9pm till 2am to get it done so I could be up for the dcs when they were little. Did it regularly for 4 years until they both went to school.

But as bramshott said once you can get over the hump of starting it is not too bad, I just hate that constant feeling of guilt whenever i do something for myself or with my family that I really should be working.

Particularly given how low teachers' pay is. When I was getting up at 5am I knew each hour I was earning £XXX or whatever which can make it a bit more palatable.

I stay at work until I finish it - which frequently means coming back late - so I opted out of pick-ups when it came to childcare arrangements - was too stressful.

Sometimes I have work at the weekends and I can only realistically do it when they are in bed - so early in the morning or late at night.

It's an eternal dilemma for working gals.

I don;t think our pay is that low, tbh. Although dp once worked out that per hour I would be better of getting work in a supermarket.

I work from home and do pretty long hours. Is flexible though, so sometimes have a break to play with dd then work more when she's gone to bed. Not ideal but I am lucky to work from home and be paid well for it.

I used to work 2 hours everyday. It had been agreed with my manager that I would do it like that so I could pick up DD1 from school, so I could save some childcare costs. So it was planned. Everyday at lunch time would prepare the files I would take home, and email any files needed.
Now, I work from 7 to 2:30 and it is much better, DH has morning duty.
Working after DDs had gone to be, around 8 pm, was crap but necessary, and I would do it again if need it, but I prefer my situation now, I don't mind geting up early, and it is so peaceful in the office at that time!!

I don't mind doing it. However my job is very flexible and working evenings when there is work to be done means I can not work during the day sometimes. I work full time hours over 4 days so often work in the evening to make sure I can have a guilt free fifth day off.
