Hi I have returned back to work after 2 year break into a standalone HR role. The company is very small but seems to have a lot of issues - I was looking to rebuild my network as I don't really have anybody to speak too and been suffering from anxiety in terms of I am doing the right thing! Just looking for individuals to be an ear and happy to reward with chocolates ...

Are you a member of the CIPD? If you go to the discussion forums on the Community on their website you get great advice and ideas

unfortunately role isnt going well

I work as a consultant to a number of companies and I find the expectations of an HR hire to be ridiculously high in most cases.

Staff morale is bad - don't worry, new HR person will fix it
Too much absence. Wait until new HR person starts.
XX is not performing - HR will sort it
XX has BO - HR will magically resolve that.
Sales are plummeting - we'll get new HR person to hire better people.

In many companies, they set up the new HR person to fail before they even start. People don't have a clear idea of what HR is, just that it will sort out the people - and every issue is a people problem!

Hope it's not too stressful for you, OP.

Happy to lend an ear too!

There are lots of HR focussed groups on LinkedIn and lots of networking groups in our area so I would imagine you could find one near you. And yes yes to joining the CIPD!

Agree that HR is often seen as a magic pill which companies trot out!!
