Do I have to tell my employer what type of procedure I am having?

I need to have a minor procedure and will require a few days off work. I have no days holiday left to take so will have to take time off sick. It's a gynaecological procedure and I'd rather not tell them the details. Do I have to tell them why or can I say I am having a procedure and need however many days off for example?

No. I write sick notes that say 'surgical procedure' if the patient wants. Just ask your surgeon to keep it vague.

I had a very similar op when I'd worked for my employer for five months. My GP put "post operative recovery" on the note.

You don't have to tell them. Just say you're having surgery and get a note to cover the time off. If you have to go into hospital you'll get a note anyway, I think.

You don't have to say but be prepared that they might ask you if there is anything they can do to help or to assist you when you return.

You can tell them the outcome, in terms of how it impacts on your role at work - I'm having an operation so I'll be signed off for 4 weeks and unable to lift at work for a further 2 weeks. Where I work there are codes assigned to illnesses, musculoskeletal, cold / flu etc. and gynae is one of those general headings but you wouldn't be asked for more detail and could also decline to give that level of detail - there is also a general "sickness" code.
