Think I am going to be made redundant. :(

Found out yesterday that I may be made redundant from my part time job that I heavily rely on to pay for childcare for when I am at Uni.

im gutted, how can I find another job that fits in so well with my course? If i cant find another job with the hours that i need, i will have to pack my course in as I just cannot afford childcare.

to say that i am pissed off is an understatment.

What a pain. Will you get a decent pay off or have you not been there very long?

If I were you I would update my cv and start looking for another job now. You might feel a bit better if you have an interview or two lined up when/if the axe does fall. I really hope that something perfect comes along for you.

Just out of interest, will finishing your course significantly improve your future pay? If so it might be worthwhile borrowing to pay for childcare, especially if you only have a short time to go. It would be a huge risk though as you would be left with a fair amount of debt if you didn't finish the course for some other reason.

thanks for replying.

Have found out that I should be ok up until march- which gives me time to find a new job, still feel pissed off though, my current job fits in perfect around Uni and it will be hard to find something as flexible.

Have worked there 6 years, have no idea what the redundancy package is, not much though im assuming.

Are you sure the redundancy is in on the cards? Well, you have until March to find something else. It must be an incredible strain on you but at least you do have that time to look about for something new. What hours are you working now? I daren't ask what money you are making, but how would it compare to stacking shelves in Tescos as you suggested on my thread?

hi dg- there are currently approx 120 in my workplace and only 45 positions available as of march, I only work 17.5 hours a week which fits in perfect around my course. I know deep down that they wont keep me on as

  1. they cant really validate keeping someone on with so few hours
  2. they know that I am at uni and will leave in 2.5 yrs time.

i get fantastic concessions on holidays and i dont mind telling you that my wage is approx £485 to £585 pcm depending on commision earned in that month- I really dont think that i would get that anywhere else for approx 17/18 hours per week- need to have a good look around i think.

It's difficult to advise without knowing your set up. Could you work weekends/evenings? Do you have a dp/dh who could help out with the childcare? Have you thought about working from home? I agree with the others that you should start looking for something else now. Good luck!
