Working different hours on different days - possible?

I currently work 4 hrs per day (approx. 9-1pm but flexible) although I'm doing more and more beyond that. It doesn't help that I'm the only part timer in the office so people 'expect' me to be around.

I am going to ask if I can increase my hours and can justify it given the amount of work I have. However, I would prefer not to do the same number of hours each day eg 3 days @ 4hrs and 2 days @ 7hrs. Does this sort of working pattern exist?
Or could/should I ask for flexible working eg a set number of hours to be worked per week Mon-Fri min 3 or 4 hours per day?

I used to do two days 8-17.30 followed by two days 8-14.

It's whatever you and the company can agree on, really.

Probably a trivial point - but how did it work with taking holidays? Was it calculated as annual hours rather than days?

I do this and AL calculated in hours. I ensure I do the same short/long hours on the same day each week, have it detailed on my email signature and ooo.

Id be more strict about not doing extra, especially if you're not being paid or getting toil. You don't find ft staff happy to hang around after work and weekends.

I do this. Our leave system works in hours so has no problem with it.

I mark out the time I am OOO in my Outlook calendar, and verbally tell people around me when I am in. Also, although my work pattern is flexible, I try to keep to a recognizable pattern so that my colleagues know e.g. that I am normally in late on a Tuesday.

Hi, working in HR I get a lot of this type of request - it will all depend on what job you do and how the business can accommodate it - there is no law on the length or number shifts someone can work. You have nothing to lose from putting in a flexible working request (that is if you haven't submitted one in the last year - as you can only formally do this once). I have always been open to flexibility and talking always helps get to the bottom of things and come up with a solution.

Stealth, maybe an hour or so, but regularly staying til 9pm and back in on Saturday? Glad I don't work in your company.

I work variable hours over a 5 day week, Mon - Tues 6 hours, Wednesday 5 hours, Thurs & Fri 7.5 hours. My annual leave is calculated in hours, therefore deducting the number of hours worked on that day of week for time off.

Yep I used to do this. Different hours each day. And whoever said outlook can't cope I found the opposite! Outlook makes it easy as you can put in your working hours for each day so everyone is clear about when you are available.
