When to ask current boss re reference for application for new job

Am applying for a new job. Problems with old job.
Completing the application form currently.

I would prefer ideally not to let my current employer know that I am applying for a new job at this stage. I probably won't even get an interview so it's not worth having to explain when there may be no need.

If I do get an interview, I will need to book time off but I suppose I still don't need to say. Feels a bit sneaky though.

What's the best thing to do in these circumstances?

Unless you are a teacher in which case it usual to tell your current head about the interview and references are taken up preinterview then it is usual that a position is offered subject to references. At the point you hand in your notice they will ask for the reference.

Do not tell your current employer that you are applying for a new job (unless, as already mentioned, it is normal in your particular field to do so). Do not tell them if you get an interview, book a day or half-day leave. Basically, you do not need to tell them until you have a job offer in your hand, subject to satisfactory references. Make clear on the application form that your current employer is not to be contacted without your knowledge.

Thanks for that, it's what I was hoping to hear. Don't work in a school so I'm just going to go with the application, see how far I get and then worry about telling work when I have to.
