Need advice from Teaching Assistants please?

I would like to become a Teaching Assistant. I have been volunteering one afternoon a week at my daughter's school since last january. Has anybody gained a position in a school from doing this, and how long did you volunteer for before you were able to get employment. Thanks.

Not me personally but 3 of the 4 Classroom Assistants at my son's Primary School started off as parent volunteers. At the very least it shows you've got the right attitude - if I were you I'd tip off the teachers about wanting paid employment and ask if they will put in a good word for you with the Head when you apply.
