I think I may have made a huge mistake...I had a job paying 27500 and part time my pay was 24150 net. I applied for and got a new job, which, top of the scale, is also 27500. However I started at the bottom of the scale which is 25200 and I now work full time, so work a lot more for a tiny bit more pay. Should I have negotiated to start higher up the scale? I didn't think I could at the time, because I was basing it on take home pay, not full time equivalent pay. Advice welcome, before I decide whether its worth approaching HR!

Depends how the starting point has been determined . Some companies (often those which have in past been govt controlled like local council or with a comparable system, such as education) have a fairly rigid system with increments based on service and extra responsibility points if your specific role entails it. You could quite reasonably ask how you would achieve the top of the pay scale and in what time frame .

I doubt there is much you can do now tbh - you're right in thinking that you should have negotiated more before signing the contract! It sucks, but maybe just chalk it up to experience?

Some organisations award additional increments for outstanding performers, so if you do a really great job, perhaps you'll get back to where you were!

You're not in any position to start negotiating now really. I assume they were clear about your salary in your offer letter/contract?

How long have you been in the new job? Spend the first year doing a good job and gathering evidence - mails from customers or colleagues which thank you for a good job, sales stats, cost savings, whatever is appropriate for the role.

If you get annual reviews, that's when to bring it up - and if you don't, ask for one anyway, saying you just want to talk about how things are going, what you're doing well and where you can improve - and why you deserve a rise.

What sort of job is it?
I am NHS and if we move we usually get the same pay between hospitals as it is based on length of service and experience.

If you are nhs, most trusts will transfer you to the same spine point if you provide evidence, previous pay slips, showing previous spine. This is assuming you are on same or higher band in your new job. This is common practice in nhs so I would speak to hr. Your previous pay would have been on your application so may just be admin error, if has happened to me twice and been easily resolved with hr. Good luck
