Last day issues

I handed in my notice on December 28th and agreed with HR my last day would be next Friday the 25th. I am entitled to two days annual leave for this month which I was going to take as cash. However I have just found out my shipping container is leaving on the 25th (I'm emigrating) so I asked for a half day on my last day. Pretty much everyone takes a half day when they are leaving anyway. So, I was turned down, apparrently there is not enough coverage! (I don't know what they will do the next week, but hey ho, not my prob). Anyway, I have emailed HR to ask if I can finish up the day before instead. Do they have to give me this, considering I have two days leave left? Or will I have to work the last day on sufferance? Arggghhh, well it just makes me bloody glad I quit really!

No your employer doesn't have to agree your holiday request. But why not ask your manager? If he/she is fine with it then they can tell HR, surely?

Oh bugger. I was hoping that they would have to let me go as my notice period will have been served and I have two days leave left. Oh well, I will come in with a big shit eating grin on my face and talk lots about how I will be thinking of them all when I am lying on the beach by the Indian Ocean. Grin

You will have already served your notice period by then, so would be extending it to work that day? That's a bit different then, sorry I assumed you were on 4 weeks' notice, or a month's notice. When would your notice period be finished?

Well I handed my notice in on Dec 28th, so my four weeks notice would finish on the 24th I think?

Well if your notice period is 4 weeks that means you need to work 4 complete weeks after handing it in. If you handed it in before you started work on the 28 you might have an argument, and could try that, but handing it in on a Friday would usually mean starting working your notice on the Monday and finishing on the Friday 4 weeks later.

Unless your manager is supportive you're probably going to have to suck this one up.

Ah fair enough, I will come to work and waft around reminding everyone that I am escaping the hell hole that is my work place, and yet they will remain. Grin
